The guy hits. He can play around the field. He sparks the offense.

It's been 91 games and the little man is hitting .293 at the moment. It's not nothing.

But does it mean anything? He is 24 years old and I don't think anyone has mentioned him as a long term piece in the looming Yankee dynasty everyone is predicting. But is he? Because more than anything else, the man has been very useful.

Torreyes is Phil Rizzuto reincarnated in today's game. Same hitting stroke. Doesn't bunt as often.

He's been fine, but really Tyler Wade should step up and bump him, more upside on offense, faster, probably a better infield defender, plus he can play all three OF positions. Wade hasn't looked good so far at the big league level, but NY is best off long-term if Wade is the utility man.

Nice waiver wire pickup by Cashman, though, he has been killing it for a couple of years now.

Second four hit game of the season for Torreyes tonight, up to .299. Good night to start this thread, Wingack.

Please don't take this as just a Sox fan ripping on a yankee prospect. But . . .
I honestly thought this guy choked in a couple instances that I've seen, screwing up plays in the field and swinging, ridiculously at high fastballs.

I'll be surprised if he's around through next season, NY has not just Wade but Torres and Andujar and Nick Solak pushing from below for SS/2B/3B, and Didi isn't going anywhere.

Yeah, I pretty much only have seen him in Sox games, and in particular the Sox series at Fenway in late June, and I thought he was far in a way the worst player on the field, and he cost the Yankees at least 1 game

It is somewhat amazing the numbers he has put up, and if Cashman were smart (which he is), I wouldn't be the least bit surprised if he deals him in the offseason for way to much in return.

He's certainly had some huge hits this season (game-tying single with two outs and two strikes off of Edwin Diaz in Seattle, though they ended up losing in extras), and he is scrappy, but for all the reasons mentioned by Abbey above I have a hard time seeing him hang around. In theory he could be a Luis Sojo type, but Sojo was a better hitter and I think a better fielder.

He never walks, 296 PAs and only 8 BBs, which is why he has a BA of .299 and a OBP of only .316.

Yeah, if there's a way to sell high on him this offseason, they should. Pitchers will soon realize that he's a major hacker and stop throwing him first pitch fastballs. He saw a total of six pitches while going 4 for 4 last night.

Well, it is working for him at the moment so he should be jumping first pitch. He has some decent OBP's in the minor and took walks more often in previous MLB seasons.

Doesn't mean he can't work on that aspect of his game moving forward, he is just 24 this could be an area of growth for him.

I certainly don't see him a centerpiece moving forward, but he is performing like the kind of cog a winning machine needs right now. I don't know why he can't continue to be. Yes, the pipeline is full of studs, but Torreyes should block any of them and guys like Torreyes are always needed.

He is blocking Tyler Wade right now (possibly for the best this season, but who knows). Maybe he will semi-blossom like Solarte once he is moved, but his roster spot could definitely be upgraded IMO.

I thought I explained that, but he is quite literally blocking Wade right now. If Torreyes didn't exist, Wade would be playing 2B every day while Castro is out. And I agree that Wade has looked bad in very limited time in the bigs, but also it's only been 52 ABs spread over two months.

It is more like if Wade had performed well enough he would be playing 2B every day while Castro is out. It has nothing to do with Torreyes IMO, he just happens to be serviceable fill-in on the roster.

I don't think the organization looks at Torreyes as a guy who blocks players or his blocking players (that is Chase Headley's job), if Wade performed well enough he would be playing, but he isn't.

I mean, that's true, but on the other hand, if Torreyes had gone hitless for the past week, Wade would be playing a lot more now. Wade has had 5 ABs in the last three weeks, he's not exactly getting chances after his shitty 50 ABs (and I do understand this, I think we're mostly quibbling about semantics).
