Non-Pats Coaching Carousel 2024

I went to read the Black Monday thread. When I opened it, I saw the Vrabel news and then saw 3 more pages to read, I skipped to the end. That thread is now about if WRs matter or something. It seems like a fun argument but I like following the coaching changes in the league and that thread is becoming a lot of noise to signal. That's cool but I'm making this to follow non-Pats coaching changes.

So far I saw Gruden may be helping out more in NO. Does that mean Allen is safe? Everything below is not authoritative just trying to track:

Tenn open

Any Vegas news? AP could stay but hear Harbaugh's name a lot.

Car still open

Atl open

LAC open

Commanders open.

Seattle open. Imagine Quinn will get a close look.

Hottest Candidates (additional candidates not bolded)

Noobs: Ben Johnson, Ejiro Evero, Slowik, Brian Callahan, Bienemy

Retreads: Harbaugh, Vrabel, Dan Quinn, Antonio Pierce (semantics aside on "retread"), Flores, Wilks

I would like to see Harbaugh in Chicago, that could be fun.

Maybe Harbaugh stays at Michigan? Does he want to be a Saban or settle unfinished business in the NFL?

Phew!

I'd add Frank Smyth and Bobby Slowik to the noobs. I think they'll both get interviews. Maybe Luke Anarumo too? Cincy had a down year but he seems to have a good rep still.

Harbaugh is a hard case. He seems like a guy that's going to burn out fast. My bet is that he jumps to the LAC for a 5-year deal. I don't think LV wants another big money guy right now.

Agree on Slowick. Lou interviewed last year, wonder if he gets more this year. Thinking of him makes me think I should list Wink, but he never seems to draw HC interest.

Jameis freelancing that last play was not a great sign for Allen. I think his seat is at least lukewarm, but I believe the Saints' owner is known for not wanting to pay guys to sit, and Allen has two years left on his deal.

I have no idea why Allen is keeping his job but all indications are he is.

In interesting stuff for not open (yet) jobs...
Lot of smoke that if the Cowboys lose round 1 that job will open and Jerry basically heavily hinted at it.
Even more interesting, there are apparently people in PHI saying that if they tank out in round 1 Siriani will be on the hot seat (which seems way too soon for me, but that's what the rumors are).

It seems like the veracity of the Philly and Dallas rumors could slow things down until those games are played as they are premiere jobs if open. Siriani is not my kind of guy but that would be quite dramatic for him to be the fall guy. His staff got gutted, Hurts seems banged up. It has been bad recently but SB (kind of stolen due to field conditions and officiating) and getting to 10-1 to fired...jeez. I think they beat Tampa*. Is that enough to save him?

McCarthy has been good. Wasn't a fan of the hire but he has been very good. I guess losing to GB might piss Jerry off.

With the options available, I don't think either Dal or Philly make a move. The latter would be an overraction, and the former is a lot more circumspect about this stuff than the media would have people believe. Maybe if BB becomes available, but otherwise they'll just shuffle the deck on both staffs.

I was looking at the prominent minority candidates. Wilks and Glenn are two. Bienemy remains, as does Mayo. Tough situation for these guys. They want to play along and get the exposure but it's like Flores claimed: mostly BS.

Wilks being floated as a candidate is pretty ridiculous. His performance was not particularly lauded in Ninerland and there was all kinds of hubbub around him moving from the booth to the field after their three-game losing streak. He might turn out to be a great HC down the road, but I find it hard to believe anyone is seriously considering hiring him to be their HC.

What is it about Ben Johnson that’s so appealing? The Lions offense has been really good, but they have a ton of talent on that side of the ball. One of the best OL in the game, good QB, high end #1 WR, dynamic receiving back, great receiving TE.

Not saying he won’t or can’t succeed but so often these in-demand coordinators are in demand because they’re playcallers for impressive units full of high end talent. Then they go to a HC role, usually on a bad team with a struggling offense/defense (whichever side of the ball the coordinator coaches) and the guy flames out spectacularly because the talent just isn’t there.

I cant think of too many (or any really) coordinators who go to a team lacking talent on their side of the ball that has gotten them competitive. Shane Steichen maybe? But the Colts have more to work with at the skill positions than a lot of bad teams do.

As for the coaching carousel, Will McClay getting an interview with Washington is interesting because I’ve always viewed Dallas as a team which could be in the Belichick running if McClay wasn’t around and the Cowboys flop. Not sure if the Bb/JJ combo would work due to egos, but I could see Jerry wanting a guy who can deliver another title before he dies.

Atlanta seems like a good spot for Johnson or one of the other offensive minded guys. If they get Fields or a 2nd tier QB prospect (McCarthy if he declares, Pennix etc) they could make some noise in that division.

don’t know why the Raiders would move on from Pierce

Vrabel probably ends up in New England unfortunately

Harbaugh strikes me as a guy with a big lifetime todo list, and he just checked off National Championship. I think he wants to try to get a Super Bowl next. He knows he can succeed in the NFL, and he'll get a big contract somewhere. I think he'll end up with the Chargers or maybe the Raiders.
I feel like the Bears job is Harbaugh's if he wants it - no reason other than I've heard podcasters wishcasting/speculating that it will be his destination.

Chicago fans are pretty lukewarm on Harbaugh from his playing days, but they'll love him if he makes them a perennial winner. Fans also hate Eberflus but I won't be surprised if he's back if they don't get Harbaugh.

EDIT--the more I think about this, the more I think this could be a great landing spot for Harbaugh.

I feel like keeping him and firing some offensive personnel including the QB coach, means they’re sticking with Fields. Just a hunch.

Not sure about that. Making him learn a 3rd system in 4 years seems like a terrible idea. I don't think this indicates much other than that the Bears are poorly run, but hypothetically it makes more sense to start fresh on offense if you're bringing in a rookie QB who will have to learn a system anyway.

I think it's the other way around. Wiping out the offensive staff probably means they are starting over on that side of the ball. Eberflus is a defensive guy. If they thought Fields was the guy and wanted to build off the last half of the season, they probably keep the offensive staff as is. New guy, new system, new QB in all liklihood.

You and Cellar make good points. That does sound more likely. The Bears being poorly run being the only constant.

I think this is right. And I'll be interested to see the market for Fields. There are quite a few teams where he's be an upgrade, but many will be looking to the draft instead for financial and timeline reasons. The game is slowing down for him though and in the right situation he could really pop. Atlanta? LV? NO? Minn if Cousins leaves? Those are some of the teams that are less likely to have great options in the draft.

I’ll say this. Eberflus seemed to lose his team less than Saleh did. Maybe that’s because I don’t watch the Bears as closely. If Rodgers didn’t bless them, this crew of coaches would be out of 1JD.

Not knowing who would have taken the job, it is tough to know if this is the right call. I wonder who they bring in for the new QB. Reich failed as a HC but he seemed to do a good job with Wentz and I think there is an Eberflus connection. I would try to bring in Bienemy. I know his squad didn’t put up great stats but I liked what I saw from him.

The Bears played the 5th easiest schedule in the NFL this season.

Their wins came against Washington, Vegas, Carolina, Minny (in a 12-10 throwback to the 1910s), Detroit, Arizona, & Atlanta. The win over the Lions is a legit high-quality win, but the rest are lackluster.

Having Eberflus go into a "prove it" year with that track record is a mistake. He's going to struggle to attract top offensive staff because of the prospect of this being a 1 year gig. I don't see this ending well.

This all seems kind of underwhelming, doesn’t it? The Bears, Steelers and Cowboys all keep their head coaches. BB in Atlanta. Harbaugh maybe ending up with the freakin Chargers. I know it won’t effect fan interest or ratings or anything, but the big coaching carousel is looking like kind of a dud.

On the other side of that coin, it'll be hilarious to watch the Cowboys, Bears, etc. fire their coaches a year too late after failing once again in 2024.

I'm really trying to imagine BB in Atlanta after SB 51. Bygones be bygones and all, but the Patriots ripped the heart out of Blank and that fan base, and now this reviled coach is going to run the Falcons?

I guess if Dallas can hire Parcells, anything can happen.

I can't imagine BB would keep Ridder there if he takes the ATL job, would he?
Ridder is elite at one thing, turning the ball over in the red zone. I assume there is no chance BB would use him at QB.

The only thing giving me pause is that Mac Jones started the majority of games over the last two years. But still, Ridder is BAD.

I would guess Cousins of those two. Mayfield may get re-upped and in any case I can't see a division rival letting him go to the Falcons.
I mean, Atlanta could draft a second-tier QB to develop, but with Belichick wanting to win immediately a vet seems most likely.

Lombardi made a somewhat similar point in a recent podcast, saying that teams with lackluster HC situations who might be having trouble deciding whether or not to keep the current guy in place needed to think really carefully because they may not ever see as strong a group of potential candidates as early 2024 is offering, with Bill, Harbaugh, and Carroll all on the market.

Bring in Josh as your OC and Jimmy G as QB. Draft a QB in the middle rounds and use the rookie or Ridder when Garoppolo inevitably gets hurt. That should get BB the record within two years.

Also… re-united with Jonnu and Cordarelle! :D

Vrabel too
