Clearly, they are targeting either Lance or Fields. Does this mean Jimmy G is back in play?

Yeah Jimmy is definitely in play. I'm guessing they keep Jimmy though if they draft Lance.

maybe? Schefter says they plan to keep Jimmy G, and I think it makes sense. They are a good enough team that they should probably work in their rookie rather than toss him in, and what is Jimmy's value in a trade? Also, freeing up cap isn't a key concern given how many guys have signed already.

I'd be stunned if they don't move Jimmy G.

They just decimated their draft capital to draft a QB at 3. That guy is going to play sooner rather than later, even if it's Lance.

Having him take up 26.4 million of their cap, while hoping he loses the job to the rookie, is an unwise use of resources in my opinion.

This is quite the exciting development if you are in the Jimmy G. Camp, which I am.

While it certainly does not make anything a sure thing, I would think that Jimmy G and his agent would think about asking out if the 49ers draft a QB here with the obvious writing on the wall.

I didn’t think that this offseason could get any better, but if the Patriots could end up with Jimmy G (after being cut) on a 2-year $25m type contract — I don’t know if I could handle it.

Of course they are going to say this, in order to drive the best deal they can get for him.

Surprised the Fins don't want Sewell for the next 15 years, but that's quite a haul.

How easy is it to trade him this deep into FA? His cap number is not easy for a lot of teams to absorb right now, so he'd likely need to agree to a restructure which gives him a lot of say in where he goes.

Seems like the Dolphins can still get a really high-level player at 12, especially if a QB run pushes elite players at other positions down. Great move for them if Tua is the real deal.

I don't see how they can roll with him to start the year when he is 100% not the QB of the future now. I can see why they might want a vet to start the year but this isn't fantasy football, Jimmy G isn't going to happily comply with that plan.

Feels like he will now demand a trade and they will have to do their best to find a half-decent offer.

Maybe. I just don't see where the deal comes from. Who is going to give anything up to pay Jimmy G? Maybe early in FA, but now? Maybe the Broncos?
I honestly don't see how the Patriots make it work even if they wanted to under their current cap situation.

I think people are vastly overrating the league-wide interest in paying Jimmy G

SF think they are a playoff team (probably should be, they were 6-10 (pythag 8-8) in a season from hell for injuries, and have no cap issues. Paying Jimmy G to be your 1 year starter, or possible very good backup makes sense if you think you're a contender more than trading or cutting him to save some cap for roll-over and chancing losing a full year to bad QB play.

This puts the Dolphins in a great position to land Watson when/if the issues around him are resolved, even if that is not until next offseason. They could get an impact player at #12 this year and still have 2 2022 1st rounders and 2 2023 1st rounders.

That's a lot to pay, but if the pick turns out to be a franchise QB, I'd pay it. They'll have a cheap QB for a time and they still have the 2nd, 3rd round picks in 22 and 23. It's the spot to be in, so pretty smart move by the Niners. Too bad the Fins were never going to give the Pats a shot at the pick.

And now we have a better idea of the cost to get that 4th QB prospect. Unless you feel equally about the three QB's after Lawrence, I'd be surprised if anyone pulled the trigger pre-draft. You don't know which QB will be the 4th.

If the QB the Jets get this year goes on to win a SB, then everything beforehand won't matter. It'll be like Darnold never existed - a colorful story illustrating the years of ineptitude. We have the very model in NE.

PFN's mock draft software had the price of the Falcons' pick at 1-4 something like the Pats' first rounders in 2021 and 2022, and a second rounder in 2022.

So that was obviously way understating the real market.

The more I think about it, the more I think SF's plan is to draft Lance #3, have Jimmy pull a Mariota and re-work his deal. Then have him start this season.
Probably best case for both sides. SF gets a year for the raw Lance to learn the system, Jimmy gets to start in a good offense that he's familiar with, which is his best chance to build value for FA next year. Is there a better situation for him? I don't think NE for example is likely to let him put up bigger numbers than SF. They'll shift money from salary to incentives, maybe guarantee a chunk to get him to do it.

If I'm Don Yee, I say no thanks.

If Jimmy isn't your guy, trade him to a team that believes he can be.

Why though? Is Jimmy G getting a long-term deal at good money? This year for Jimmy should be all about showing he's healthy and can play at a high level. His best chance to do that is SF, and then he can have the whole league as options in FA. At this point, a lot of teams have their guy, or at least a guy. I'm not sure there is a team out there who would bring him in as "the guy" including NE.
If Yee is a good agent, he's looking at the best way to maximize Jimmy's options and money next summer.

That would be especially lol since one of Mac's biggest weaknesses is passing outside of the pocket & I read that due to his lack of bootlegging skills he'd be a bad fit in a Shanahan/McVay offense.
It's just a hunch, but with all the SF writers I read on a regular basis, the general hunch is the Shanahan has always wanted Fields (from this draft class, there was obviously Watson discussion that is now gone).

Given BB's doing the Niners a solid on Jimmy G, I wonder if he'd be able to find out exactly how they rank the QB's. I'd expect there's some trust there and it'd allow BB to get a jump on the ATL pick if he liked the options.

Because you just drafted his replacement.

Why take less money to be a stop gap when there are teams out there, like in the Foxboro area, that think you are their present and future.

Is this is a smart move for the Dolphins tho? This is a QB-rich draft. Is Tua really **the** guy?
Is it still a QB rich draft when you get the 3rd choice of those QBs? I'm not sure.

The bigger question is should the Fins have taken a top notch LT on a rookie contract in Sewell, or whoever they deem the best defender in the entire draft.

See this makes two assumptions...
1. That anyone would pay him more
2. That the Patriots... or anyone else, would commit to him long term.

That's a pretty big set of assumptions, and I don't really think the second one is true. The Patriots would like to have Jimmy G I have no doubt. I don't think they're handing him a big money contract tomorrow if they have the chance. Staying with a good SF team gives him the best chance to put up the kind of season that makes him an in demand player in the offseason, and the Patriots, and other teams would still be there, but with more years and a lot more guaranteed money on the table.

The only reason to want to get moved is if you don't believe you can stay healthy and/or put up good numbers, then you take whatever you can get because you think you're never getting another big money deal anyway.

I will also add that a lot of the consensus from the SF area reporters is that Shanahan thought the Alex Smith/Mahomes scenario was perfect and wants to recreate it with Garoppolo/Fields (Or whoever they pick at 3).

He thinks his offensive is too tough to learn in what will be an abbreviated offseason, so wants someone ready on week 1.

It's not that far off, right? A 2022 2nd is roughly comparable to a '23 1st.

Or he could cut Jimmy G and recreate it with Alex Smith himself as the temporary starter for 10-20% of what they're stuck paying Jimmy.

Top QB salary cap hits for 2021:

1) Aaron Rodgers $37.2m
2) Russell Wilson $32m
3) Kirk Cousins $31m
4) Ryan Tannehill $29.5m
5) Matt Ryan $26.9m
6) Jimmy Garoppolo $26.4m ($25m to acquiring team)
7) Ben Roethlisberger $25.9m
8) Teddy Bridgewater $23.0m
9) Dak Prescott $22.2m
10) Derek Carr $22.1m

(Mahomes is $7.4m this year before jumping to $35.8m next year & $46.8m the year after)

I can't see any team taking Jimmy G on at his current contract, ergo, something has got to give.

I think it might be a bit of bluster so they can maybe recoup some of the draft capital they just gave up.

Jimmy's contract is structructed so they don't really take a cap hit if they cut him anytime before week 1. They have time to play the leverage game.
