I think it’s funny the Jets are down so bad, but if the heel is down inbounds first, why does the whole foot have to land inbounds?

4 down territory, so instead of taking a big shot on 3rd and 1, get stuffed and then run a pass on 4th that would be kinda meh even if successful?

Hard to root for.

I know that’s little but that crap from Wilson would piss me off if I was a jets fan. That’s should be an easy catch and simple foot drag of the second foot for any competent receiver. And then he joking around with the defender after. And then never get the first down.

Looking like a possible playoff team but not a top team (assuming SF is as good as they usually are).

The Jets being bad with a healthy Rodgers would be such a glorious development.
Even better would be a healthy and meh Rodgers...

By the way, you know who is having a great night on the Jets? Haason Reddick.

Replay assist is kind of weird, its like unpredictable (and inconsistent...) retroactive editing. How do coaches know what to challenge?

You kind of have to make the other team punt to have a chance. Don't remeber any 49ers punts.

It’s also completely lacking in transparency. We can probably thank Big Al Riveron for starting this bullshit back in LII.

If they quickly fix obvious misses, even though it just fucked me, I’m in favor of it.

If it's inexplicable and random, I'm not in favor of it. How is unpredictably getting the call right after the fact in the few seconds when coaches need to make challenge decisions helpful?

I just looked up their win total over/under and expected 10.5 and was surprised to see 9.5. I would take the over, expecting 10 or 11 wins.

They should probably just enhance it and get rid of the challenges, allow them to (gulp) stop live action if they need more time to review a call.

Apparently Mason said in his post-game interview he knew Friday he was starting. I wonder if the league will be taking a look at Shanahan's injury list shenanigans. Seems rather blatant.

Thought the exact same thing watching the postgame. He seemed a little confused at first how to answer but definitely said he knew on Friday.

Isn’t this an easy answer though? CMC was listed as questionable, we knew he’d have a limited workload if available and Mason would start.

Given all the calf injuries leading to achilles stuff, it didn't blow my mind that CMC wasn't playing. The only "controversy" would have been if the 9ers lost close. They didn't, so what is the problem (rhetorical)?

A lot of fantasy owners were super duper unhappy with the late announcement, especially given that it was the Monday night game and no chance at that point to put another guy into the starting lineup. Tons of FF owners got a big fat zero from CMC this week. And for a lot of people - that potentially meant a lot of $$$. I'm sure they'd have liked to have known by Saturday that CMC wasn't going to play.

Logic doesn't really dictate the NFL's motivations for getting the boys together for a good old fashion investigation.

@BaseballJones answered the key point: gambling. The line was -3.5 for most of the week and some went to -4 yesterday. Then most books pulled the game right before the CMC news became public.

I get it, but "investigation"-wise, CMC was listed a questionable. Even if Mason knew he was starting Friday, CMC could still be questionable to play a limited role in the game.

Teams don't have to release "starters" designations.

I would guess the league would very much like to see guys listed as doubtful if you known 3 days in advance that they will play little to no role, and have a good chance of being out (especially since they then immediately leaked to Schefter that he might miss next week).

It certainly sounds like SF shifted CMC up the designation tree all weekend, likely to try and gain a gameplan advantage. They should be fined if the league is serious about designations (which they should be given how many gambling partners they have).

Good luck proving any of that. Why is it not possible they thought he could have a limited role until yesterday afternoon when they made the decision?

Shanahan says he didn’t tell Mason he would be the starter just to be ready.

And we’re basing all this nonsense on an undrafted guy saying something quick in an on field interview seconds after the game or his life. Maybe he meant to say “I knew is was possible on Friday”, which, of course since CMC was questionable (still on the injury report).

If the NFL decides to go that far for their betting overlords, and they might, feel free to have actual rules in place. Teams need to name their squad 2 days before kickoff.

This is a nonsense media story because a guy doesn’t get interviewed much. NFL teams do this stuff all the time.

They may not, but I'm sure the league will look into it, may come down to "can't tell, guy misspoke" and nothing. They care quite a bit, and always have about teams not using the injury report correctly, they and other leagues care a lot more now that they make big money off gambling, because their partners are never happy if they are setting a line with shitty information, so there will be some light pressure to remind teams. NBA did it this year, fined a couple teams for not giving good injury reports.

When I saw Mason live, he paused a bit before answering. And I thought, like you, it was likely because he’s not used to interviews, wasn’t really sure how to respond, and wasn’t really distinguishing between “you may start”, “you’re starting but we expect cmc to still play”, and “cmc isn’t playing, it’s on you.” Rather than him knowing the importance of the injury report and deciding whether to cover for the team or not.

But it is an important story for the league’s sake. The betting line was consistent with CMC playing. McCaffrey said on Friday he had no doubt he was playing Monday. Then he was a surprise scratch an hour before kick off and the books pulled the game from the boards. If Mason said nothing, this would all seem consistent with McCaffrey thinking he would be fine by Monday, but it was still bothering him and the team decided when everyone was at the facility on Monday they weren’t going to risk it for a week 1 home game. But Mason saying I was told Friday I would start while McCaffrey was saying Friday he would definitely play on Monday is an issue when the league is encouraging gambling.

Teams averaged 188.3 passing yards in week 1.

Last year teams averaged 218.9 passing yards a game, or more than 30 yards more per game than in week 1 this year.

Small sample, obviously, but it will be interesting to see if it becomes a trend. With QBs running the ball than more than ever, I wonder how much that's taking away from the passing game.
