I freaking love football season. I love it more when the Patriots are good, but, well, we can't always have everything, can we? Still lots of great sporting entertainment ahead. Can't wait for the Thursday night matchup to kick things off.

I know this is the general NFL game thread, but I chuckled when I didn't see that Pats/Bengals game and thought the league just gave the W to Cincy and removed the game entirely.

So, I guess this answers the question. The Patriots really are the worst team in the league.

Y'all, I don't know about the Pats season upcoming, but as someone living in Cincinnati, I can tell you if I was a betting person, I would bet the Pats straight up, and certainly to cover. The Bengals are this season's Eagles without the benefit of a great start. If the owner were not so cheap, Zac Taylor would be the first coach fired this year and I would not be the least bit surprised if more Bengals ended up in court for crimes against one another than ended up on the Pro Bowl team this year.

We have a whole Bengals thread where you can share this amazing insight there!

I am really curious how that Friday night game does in terms of numbers, given that it is Peacock (a streaming service that isn't one of the larger ones), Friday night (usually a graveyard slot for TV), the matchup (ostensibly pretty good!) and the international location (I am guessing that is going to boost interest). My understanding is that the game will be available on NBC in the Green Bay/Philly markets too, which seems like it will make a significant dent in streaming numbers. This seems like a case where every outcome, high or low ratings on Peacock, will be justified.

I am kind of sick of all the Jim Harbaugh talk, I know he is seen as some kind of miracle worker, but I hope the Raiders annihilate them.

I took the plunge and got NFL Sunday Ticket on YouTube. I learned that Vegas has not given the Pats any games to be favored to win, so I hope to recoup the cost with some judicious betting on an ad hoc basis.

Granted, everybody's 0-0, but this seems like an outstanding first week slate. All of the solo games feature solid playoff contenders and some fun storylines:

Baltimore @ Kansas City
- Can BAL make up for their pathetic AFCCG departure? Is King Henry still atop his throne?
- Has a full year of Swiftboating softened Kelce to the point that he's just happy to be there? Who will Mahomes throw to otherwise?

Green Bay @ Philadelphia
- Did Jordan Love truly make The Leap, or was just the beneficiary of a lot of weakened teams and poor coaching of his opponents?
- Has PHL recovered from their intense swoon?

Pittsburgh @ Atlanta
- Does Russell Wilson have anything left in the tank? How quickly does he get hooked for Justin Fields?
- After years without a good QB, does ATL suddenly have 2 good QBs?

Arizona @ Buffalo
- Is MHj the true phenom and returns Kyler Murray to prominence?
- Can BUF survive their huge talent departures on both sides of the ball?

Tennessee @ Chicago
- Is this the year Chicago Hope isn't just an ER clone, but an actual thing?
- Do the Titans have anyone who plays football for them?

Houston @ Indianapolis
- Who is Anthony Richardson's backup? (oh hey, it's Joe Flacco!) Will he emerge Minshew-like to lead IND to another unexpected early season win against HOU?
- Does HOU put it all together and truly dominate the AFC in the sophomore year of their high-talent offense?

Jacksonville @ Miami
- Does TrevLaw have anyone to throw the ball to?
- Can anyone keep MIA under 40 in any game this year?

Carolina @ New Orleans
- Ok, I said the solo games have fun storylines. This will be a very bad game of football.

Minnesota @ New York Giants
- And also this.

Las Vegas @ Los Angeles Chargers
- What draft picks will LVR get when they trade Adams to NYJ?
- Will the Chargers become the first pro team to be sanctioned by the NCAA?

Dallas @ Cleveland
- Will BB take over the Cowboys mid-season, or will Jerry just go interim after a slow start?
- Was CLE being hamstrung by AVP, or was he actually their savior last season?

Washington @ Tampa Bay
- Should Jayden Daniels have gone QB1? TB seems like the right defense for him to light up.
- Does overpaying a QB make him good? Baker Mayfield sure hopes so.

Los Angeles Rams @ Detroit
- Does the R in LAR still stand for Rejuvenated, or will Puka be a shell of himself?
- Does DET continue their honeymoon, or are they one-and-done?

New York Jets @ San Francisco
- How hard will you laugh if AA-Ron tears his other Achilles?
- Can Brock Purdy afford a 2BR/2BA condo near the stadium this year?

I had never looked at a map until now... the stadium is like 3 miles from San Jose's border. Very not San Francisco.

Purdy's base is 985k btw. A SFH is not doable but perhaps he could afford an apartment?

I know this area quite well, as I've had a couple of different employers whose HQs are in the neighborhood. It's not SFO expensive, but the whole valley is pricy. I do wonder if he'd bother buying a place, when it's possible the Niners won't be able to re-sign him due to impending cap hell/turnover.

I’m looking forward to seeing the local fans at this game—and if they put American fans to shame. Like, at soccer games they’ll have a whole band and everyone’s doing the samba. That’s some good shit. Wonder what they got for “the other football.”

He is in an applebees ad this year. That could help him in the neighborhood.

Nevermind the difference in socioeconomic profile of fans, with tickets costing between 20-100 times as much as the average entry to soccer games, at soccer games we have decades of songs every fan knows by heart, as well as organized instrument playing/flag waving, so the level of organization in terms of chanting and making noise demands almost an institutional adherence that simply can't be present for Friday's game, not to mention the fact that since it's the first game in Brazil, fans of every team will be in attendance and thus the supporters of the Eagles and Packers specifically likely won't be able to get anything going.

It'll be packed (I got in place for online tickets an hour beforehand and they all sold out before I got even halfway through the line), and there will likely some noise during the game, but I frankly wouldn't expect anything much different from the London games on that front.

He's just lucky Pete Carroll isn't going to be on the other sideline making sure his team struggles to reach the SB or win one.

I'm thinking it'll do better than the exclusive regular season Peacock game on 12/23 last year (Bills-Chargers), but not as well as their playoff game. The former averaged 7.3 million viewers, the latter 22.0 million.

I'm going to guess it'll average around 10 million.

This is like a Disney princess song
It’s the farthest thing from that. Check out the lyrics.

Lift every voice and sing,
'Til earth and heaven ring,
Ring with the harmonies of Liberty;
Let our rejoicing rise
High as the listening skies,
Let it resound loud as the rolling sea.
Sing a song full of the faith that the dark past has taught us,
Sing a song full of the hope that the present has brought us;
Facing the rising sun of our new day begun,
Let us march on 'til victory is won.

Stony the road we trod,
Bitter the chastening rod,
Felt in the days when hope unborn had died;
Yet with a steady beat,
Have not our weary feet
Come to the place For which our fathers died.
We have come, over a way that with tears has been watered,
We have come, treading our path through the blood of the slaughtered,
Out from the gloomy past,
'Til now we stand at last
Where the white gleam of our bright star is cast.

God of our weary years,
God of our silent tears,
Thou who has brought us thus far on the way;
Thou who has by Thy might
Led us into the light,
Keep us forever in the path, we pray.
Lest our feet stray from the places, our God, where we met Thee,
Lest our hearts drunk with the wine of the world, we forget Thee;
Shadowed beneath Thy hand,
May we forever stand,
True to our God,
True to our native land.
