Horrible tragic news

Schefter just said he pulled over along side of road and got outside of car and then hit. He’s there (SFL) to work with skill positions per Trubisky’s request.

RIP Dwayne

I believe Schefter is neurodivergent and doesn't intentionally keep doing things like this.
Agreed, I don't think there's an intent to injure here. If I had to guess, I'd say that he had competing impulses working on him at once and slipped up.

Primarily, to be "first" with the news, regardless of how little that should mean in a case like this. Then, the reporter impulse to provide as much "information" as possible. If Haskins were retiring, for instance, describing him in those terms wouldn't be objectionable at all. Finally, the trap that is squeezing as much into a tweet as possible.

All the full stories about Haskins's death will mention his NFL struggles, only further down in the reporting. By trying to do it all at once, Schefter either forgot or failed to consider the need to be sensitive to the moment.

Very sad news.

And WTF Gil Brandt? I know nothing about Haskins but that’s a tragic way to die, and way, way too young.

Edit: Didn’t realize Brandt was 90, might be time for him to stop doing live radio interviews.

Yeah this is an old man and he doesn't sound like he's all there. Maybe some kind of dementia? Can't believe he would knowingly say things that callous.

Dementia doesn't turn you into an unmitigated asshole. It makes you forget things.

It makes you say wildly inappropriate things because you have no filter.
I'm less inclined to give that asshole a pass for what he said than you are, I guess.

What he said is gross. If he has dementia, which he doesn't, he shouldn't be on the radio. But he doesn't have dementia, he's just a heartless asshole who loves to spit on the graves of people who die tragically, I guess.

I should’ve been more clear, I don’t think Gil Brandt has dementia, I do think he’s just an absolute asshole, and it’s beyond me how someone could think saying something like that is even close to being ok

I wish that this were true. Having lost both parents to two different forms of dementia (Lewy Body Dementia and Alzheimer's), and my godmother to vascular dementia, and after much caregiving for them and being with dozens of others similarly afflicted, dementia does a host of terrible things to the brain and the soul, including, often, being an insensitive jerk and saying terrible things--sometimes to people who love you.

None of this is to excuse Gil Brandt, or even my dad for the things he said to me on his deathbed, but it is a terrible and corrosive disease that afflicts people in ways other than loss of memory.

It can also be subtle, intermittent, and hard to recognize/easy to excuse in people you are close to.

Sorry for the digression...

Edit: more to the point of the thread, it sounds like Brandt had some issues with Haskins for some time...I've known many 90-year-olds who had very little cognitive impairment but who were tactless jerks...

Does being neurodivergent make you get basic information wrong?

Nonsense. His statement was specific and purposeful.

Why are people rushing to make excuses for titanic assholes?

I can't believe that this has to be noted in this discussion, but there isn't a poster in this thread who knows the status of Gil Brandt's health, at least in terms of it comes to dementia.

That said, he needs to be off the radio. I hear him from time to time on Sirius NFL and -- while he hasn't said anything this egregious -- he rambles, gets lost and mixes up details when speaking. Alex Marvez, who is his usual co-host, spends more than a bit of his airtime guiding Brandt back onto the path.

Doesn't let him off the hook for what he said, but those who keep putting him on the air need to rethink whether to keep doing so.

To be clear I wasn’t speculating about Brandt’s cognitive abilities or making excuses for him. More just commenting that it’s probably time for media outlets to stop sticking a microphone in his face and giving him a platform.

Alex Marvez? The guy with the deer in the headlights look who sometimes does backstage interviews on AEW TV is also Brandt's co-host?

That may explain a lot.

I think Schefter may have been trying to connect Haskins to the NFL (which is is beat more than college football is) in his tweet, for the laypeople who didn't know him, and just chose poorly on his first draft (which is what it should have stayed), but fixed it on the second try.

RIP.

The more I think of this the more to me it sounds like suicide.
That is the rumor flying around down here. Guys in the poker room last night who are friends with emergency personnel said that this is what they are hearing too. 3rd hand, 4th hand disclaimer and all that but that’s what the talk is down here. So senseless regardless of cause.

Is this based on anything other than a hunch? Is there a report out there that the "ran out of gas" story is false? Because if not, that would be quite a coincidence.
I’ve seen no evidence there was a broken down vehicle on the side of the interstate and many reports he was drifting around the highway. It doesn’t matter one way or the other, it’s beyond tragic.

What evidence had you seen that he was suicidal or struggling with depression? I don't follow Washington or the Steelers, but I couldn't find anything.

Honestly, your post and HRB's come across as pretty gross. Maybe wait until some facts come out before wildly speculating, or provide links if you've actually have some factual information.

Nevermind, I'll drop it. We'll likely never know the reason, and regardless it's irrelevant. Sorry for bringing it up.

This investigation is going to be complex. There are obvious issues preventing a simple explanation.

Here is some recent reporting from USA Today and an NBC6 report from over the weekend, including a phone conversation with a driver who called 911 to report a person (believed to be Haskins) walking on the highway.

This stuff is usually sussed out over time. Personally, I'm just waiting for something which contradicts the initial reports of his rental car being on the highway before going somewhere else. At the very least, a place like TMZ would 100% provide an update like this.

911 call from Haskins' widow reveals he had called her to say that he had run out of gas and told her he'd call again when he was back at his car. When she didn't hear back, she called 911. Link.

Just horrible.

Not sure why he was in the middle lane of the highway, but a very sad incident for all involved.

the reports were he was trying to cross, some of the early reports say that the other side of the highway backs up to the airport outskirts, presumably he was trying to get to a gas station there.

Why not just call AAA or roadside assistance to bring him gas? The whole situation is tragic and sad, but I can understand the questions about his frame of mind or mental state as his actions seem a bit bizarre.
