I'm missing something. Why release a corner playing at a Pro Bowl level? He played 99% of the defensive snaps last year.
Is he? sure seems like he had another down year last year. He's got one really good year, but a lot more of his years fall into the "solid but not special" bucket. He'll get picked up for sure, but his contract wasn't all that attractive because he isn't an elite CB

I was listening to NYC Sports radio yesterday afternoon (I think it was Cartin and Roberts) and they were talking about the foreign city games and the imbalance of 17 games vis a vis home/away.

One of the guys talked about the idea that perhaps had been bandied about when the 17th game was added to make every team have one neutral site game a year (thereby maintaining the equity of each team playing 8 home games). The follow-on idea was that these neutral site games could be in non-NFL cities here in the USA so as to limit the number of games in far-flung places. Some of the suggestions that they discussed, plus some of my own:
  • Ann Arbor
  • San Antonio
  • Tuscaloosa
  • Columbia (SC)
  • State College
  • Lincoln, NE
  • Norman, OK
  • Montreal
  • Toronto
Basically make these games a cross between college bowl games and Winter Classic hockey games.

I really like this idea, but I don't think the NFL will do it for cost reasons. The NFL plays games in foreign countries for the purpose of promoting its product in those places, and has decided that the cost of converting these foreign stadiums to "NFL-readiness" is worth it for that reason. The NFL doesn't need to promote its product in Ann Arbor, San Antonio, Tuscaloosa, etc.

What's your take on that call? Because I like multiple things about it. He called it early, with conviction (threw the fumble thing immediately), and it's easier to overturn the other direction than if he had simply said incomplete.
I think it’s the play that got him into the NFL. He had no idea the ball was recovered though, hence the point by the Line Judge while he is explaining what he had

Agreed that they won't, but it does strike me as marginally more 'fair'. There's definitely going to be some team - maybe Seattle or KC or some other place considered to have a strong HFA - that goes like 7-1 at home and 2-7 on the road and misses the playoffs, and they'll have a moderately good argument that if they had happened to have 9 home games instead of 9 road games, they'd have made the playoffs.

They way they do it now is the "most fair". Last year all the AFC teams had 9 home games and this year all the NFC teams have 9 home games. So the teams you're competing against for playoff spots have the same number of home & away games. The unfairness is now there is now 3 games on your schedule that is bases on what place you finished the previous year.

Oh; you know what? I had no idea. You're right. That's more fair. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I guess I'll go back to railing against actual injustices.

I read an article about him and his wife in the Wall Street Journal some months ago. Apparently, the two of them enjoy purchasing (pretty nice) houses, fixing them up over a year or so, then selling them for a (pretty big) profit.

More power to him. It's nice to have an interest one can share with one's spouse.

Wasn’t Wiggy involved with one of those house flipping shows on TLC or DIY channel a few years ago? Or am I smoking crack (again)?

edit: A&E, I was close

Wiggins appeared on A&E's Flipping Boston, the "Flip or Fumble" episode which features Wiggins joining hosts Pete and Dave on the renovation project of a home.

I’m filing Cartin and Roberts here under, “Right idea, Wrong execution.” Love the thought behind everyone having one neutral site game but looking to the Midwest and Canada is way off base. I expect the number of London games to grow during the coming years.

I think that both the radio discussion and my own sense is that you are likely correct (probably adding Germany and Mexico to that list). But I don't know why you are right other than "seeking new markets." If the NFL is going to have 16 of these games every year, they need to find more sites than just London, Berlin, Mexico City.

Making 16 "destination" games a year seems like it would have a larger global marketing impact than simply going to the same 4-5 different foreign cities every year.

Look at how much buzz the Winter Classic gets. Or "Field of Dreams."

Think of it like 16 mini-Super Bowls.

He was in Conference USA for awhile followed by a brief stint in the ACC before getting hired by the NFL.
And another "Tra", Tra Boger, is Jerome Boger's son. Former player (Tulane and the CFL) and former college assistant.

Bradberry's pass defense numbers last year...

115 targets, 71 completions, 61.7% completion rate, 8 (!!) td, 4 int, 93.0 rating

He's been pretty decent during his NFL career. But even his pro bowl season last year wasn't any great shakes:

91 targets, 56 completions, 61.5% completion rate, 4 td, 3 int, 81.2 rating

I mean, it's not bad, but not elite by any stretch of the imagination. If he wants a mega contract, hard pass. If he is willing to come here for reasonable money, yeah, of course.

I just want a capable player to have alongside Malcolm Butler and Jalen Mills, so I'll take that 2021 performance. We're super thin at outside corner. It's not a good starting duo to begin with, what happens if one of them goes down? Is Butler even a lock to play in 2022? Don't really get the plan at that position (meanwhile, they have about 28 guys that could see snaps at the slot between corners and safeties).

I see Butler, Mills, Wade, Williams and Mitchell as outside option, also I would guess that they see Jack Jones as an outside corner long term.

So Butler and Mills. Maybe I'll give you Mitchell, but if Wade and Williams are seeing significant playing time, we're toast. I wasn't talking about them literally having no players to put at those spots, more like having no players who I have any confidence can play a lick at those spots after Mills and Butler (and I don't have a whole lot of confidence in them either).

Inside they have Jonathan Jones, Bryant, Marcus Jones and Phillips/Dugger/Peppers could all matchup there as well. Much, much deeper.

Yeah like I said, I don’t mind if they add him. But not if he’s looking for big money. He’s a fairly solid player but not a true pro bowl caliber guy.

Who knows. Mitchell is a solid enough NFL CB mostly on the outside, Wade is in his 2nd year, we've seen plenty of guys break out on this team in their 2nd year from being mid or late round picks. Williams.. he hasn't looked great so far, but maybe he puts it together.
I also don't get the idea that you have more confidence in Marcus Jones than Jack Jones.

I mean, honestly I'd say we have 3 NFL starter level outside corners (not top starters, but those guys have started in the league for a while), and 2 slot guys, then the rest is all either situational use of safeties or unproven young guys.

Jack Jones was a 5'10, 170lb press man corner with limited straight line speed in college, I have no expectations he'll be able to contribute in that role as a rookie unless he has otherworldly technique. Most likely he'll need a year of NFL training to hang outside with professionals with that build. Maybe he can be used situationally in that capacity against the Waddles of the world.

I do think Marcus Jones' athletic profile and the fact that he's a slot corner would indicate he has a much better chance of contributing from the jump.

He looked reasonably fast to me in the clips I saw but in any event 4.51 isn't that bad--it's the 170 that's the problem and that is really small. Hard to imagine him contributing at a higher level than "reasonable fourth corner" as a rookie.

It's not bad, it's mediocre. It's not a deal breaker for a press man corner, but when you're that thin and not particularly tall, I think it could end up being more of an issue in the NFL than it ever was in college.

Again he looked a little faster than mediocre to me but certainly not blazing speed. Anyhow I think we essentially agree--saying "he's not fast but at least he's small" doesn't suggest someone who will make a ton of contributions outside early in his career.

I still can’t believe that an NFL coach said “I’m the head ball coach. I’ll kick you whenever the fuck I want!” to a player. Yes, he picked on the weakest guy on the team, a kicker who was having a bad year, but it’s still a professional football player. Imagine if he tried that shit on a Brian Cox/Pac-Man Jones type? Did he honestly think that would fly? I know Khan pinned his hopes of not being a joke franchise on that clown, but they gave him a pass on physically and verbally abusing employees.

This sent me down a transaction rabbit hole.

He was picked 63rd overall in 2014.

Originally, it was a Bronco pick. They traded this 2nd (63) and a 5th (171) to the 49ers. Also traded was a 2015 4th (126)

49ers gave up a 2nd (56) and a 7th (242).

49ers then traded this pick 2 (63) and the 5 (171) to Miami for 2014 2 (57).

So...while I am confused...it looks like they traded down 1 spot and picked up a future 4th. Those two picks were Carlos Hyde and Mike Davis, two RB.

Smart move, wrong players.

Ravens punter Sam Koch retires

https://www.espn.com/nfl/story/_/id/33946667/punter-sam-koch-ravens-longest-tenured-player-franchise-history-retires

Considered an innovator in punting circles, Koch created an assortment of kicks that caused problems for returners to make a clean catch. He had a hook punt that dropped in the shape of an "S" and a knuckleballer that was even harder to field. Koch sometimes torqued his body such that it looked like he was punting to the right side of the field when he was actually angling the punt to the left. There are college punters who refer to certain trick punts as "Koch hooks."[/quotes]

I’m a diehard NFL fan I have never watched a single down of the Pro Bowl. It is not like baseball or even basketball where it even at least had some real nostalgia behind it. What is the point at this point? I’m glad they are re-thinking this, there are probably much better ways they can promote the players and league.
