May be time for him to consider a position change.
And an agent change. I was a big fan of Newman’s back at Wake and everything went sideways for him once he left. Haven’t found any references to his having an attitude problem and he was thought of as being bright and a good teammate, but the tumble from “could be a first rounder” to “top of the second QB tier” to “great UDFA signing” to cut in early June is profound.

The scuttlebutt was that he lost the UGA starting QB competition and that’s why he opted out. The UGA folks who then spread that rumor put out there that he isn’t mentally tough.
The issues with him on tape were largely mental. I liked him too but he took forever to make a decision. He wasn’t a quick processor either. He has plenty of physical talent but I’m not sure he has the minimum mental traits to succeed and definitely not succeed early. If an organization can afford to be patient and take a chance on someone with physical upside through camp Newman is, from an outsiders point of view, an attractive option.

The Eagles are actually an ideal organization to take the kind of patient approach you are advocating. That they decided to cut him before even getting to camp tells me that the coaches concluded quickly that he’s never going to be able to adjust to the speed of the NFL.

The Eagles just moved on from Carson Wentz (and are eating $34m this year) largely for the bolded reasons.

For those who can’t see it:
LT: Chukwuma Okorafor
LG - Kevin Dotson (probably?)
C - Kendrick Green (maybe?)
RG - ??? (Dotson/Finney/Coward/Turner/other FA?)
RT - Zach Banner

Lotta question marks.

Wow. This is a terrible OL. Steelers have one of the worst OLs in the league right now. Drafting Kendrick Green should help. He was 87th on my board and they took him at 87. Dan Moore is an afterthought (probably). Their OT situation is a disgrace. Ben is going to be under assault this year (Karma step 1 of 10 initiated) and Najee is going to find out the difference between Bama holes and shitty NFL OL holes. Steelers might be legitimately bad this year on offense because a bad OL plus an aging QB isn’t a recipe for success.

They probably should have used 24 on an OL, or tried to trade down and still pick an OL. No OL went between 25-36, but then Dickerson, Jenkins, Eichenberg, Little, Jackson Carman, Banks, Cosmi, and Radunz went 37, 39, 42, 45, 46, 48, 51, 53. There were a lot of options in that range.

I talked about Jenkins was a match for them on the pod. Carman would have been as well. They were supposed to be interested in Dickerson and Meinerz too. All matches. Going with Green over Meinerz was baffling to me. Taking an RB at 24 is ok if you don’t have more pressing needs. Steelers did. I would have traded down and taken Jenkins or Dickerson or just taken Jenkins at 24. Apparently he didn’t interview well and that’s why he fell. I would have taken Meinerz over Freiermuth. They could have taken Spencer Brown at 87. The overall point without spelling out every possible way they could have done more is that they had options and used picks in an inefficient way given the state of their roster. Taking both an RB & a TE without accumulating more picks and not taking OL until later was an unforced error. That they knew the shape DeCastro was in and still made those decisions is even more indefensible to me.

Michael Holley fills in for Peter KIng at FMIA this week. Notable quip:

As someone who grew up in Ohio, I can tell you that watching the various adventures of the Browns is a head trip. Every franchise has its own quirky history, but it’s hard to imagine many other teams who can claim that it had one owner who fired both Paul Brown and Bill Belichick and moved the team—all in under 35 years.

Frank Clark, too bad so sad, facing up to 3 years. Even if it's get pled down to community service or something, it's nice schadenfreude.

I guess the market inefficiency that the Chiefs found of going after terrible but talented people might come with the risk of them being terrible people.
It has always amazed me how the media never talks about it.

My first thought is to refer back to the Plaxico Burress situation. Who knows how this will turn out though with Ginger Hammers Wheel O’ Justice though.

Andy Reid is fat and funny and seems to give a lot of press availability so there you go.

Seems like not a great sign when your defense leads with "these allegations are from over two years ago."

A lot of us expected them to draft or sign via FA or UDFA corners. Aside from Gilmore right now they have JC Jackson, Jalen Mills who is much better as a safety, Joejuan Williams who might be cut and so far has been buried on the depth chart, Michael Jackson Sr. who has flashed in camp and practices but is likely more of a practice squad guy, Jon Jones who is a slot corner, D’Angelo Ross who is probably just a practice squad guy, Myles Bryant who is also probably a safety or a slot guy, and a few other depth safety types. They don’t have veteran corner depth and if anything happens to JCJ or Gilmore things could get hairy. Outside corner depth could be an issue for this team and trading Gilmore even for someone as talented as A-Rob IMO would be a bad move.

Edit: if Gilmore continues his decline (last season he struggled even before the injury and he is going to be 31 in September - corner play fluctuates from year to year so it isn’t necessarily a full scale alarm yet but…) corner will be an issue this season.

I asked earlier (I think), but do you think the secondary will be aided more this season by an improved front seven?

Yes. I think the Patriots should have an average to above average pass rush as a floor with Judon, KVN, Uche, Hightower, and newcomer Barmore as a DT sub rusher in year 1. Wino should have a role at least as a sub rusher and he’s productive in that role. I can’t imagine the front 7 being less productive as a group pass rushing this year. I also have high hopes for Uche in year 2. Kyle Dugger is an ace in the hole kind of weapon and he was excellent as a rusher last year. Mark has a saying I really like “pressure equals production” - it’s not just about sacks. This unit should be productive. Now you can make a case for how the unit would underachieve but if Barmore does his job and Uche takes a leap forward this unit could be quite the force on 3rd downs.

Completely forgot about Wise who also does a good job as an IDL sub rusher. Langi isn’t chopped liver either. He’s quality depth. The Pats have invested a lot of draft and FA capital at edge. I consider multiple 3rds (Wino, Jennings, Perkins) and a 2nd OLB/ILB in Uche as significant capital even though no top 50 picks.

Is this true? I remember a few teams trying to throw at him, some success but also some questionable DPI calls. I mean, no he was def. not playing at DPOY level, but “decline” and “struggled” are kind of bold words here.

Gilmore was really good last year.

28-49 (57.1%), 326 yds, 1 TD, 1 INT, 75.7 rating against

It's pretty similar to what he did in 2018. It's just that his 2019 was otherworldly. I mean, he was still a pro-bowl caliber player last year.

Take it with a grain of salt PFF saw a dip. They had him as: 27/42 64.3%, 354 yards 13.1 YPC 2TDs, 2PBU, 1 int and a passer rating against of 96.7. His worst game was probably against Seattle and that was early on. Corner stats are tricky and if you ask three people you’ll get 3 different answers. YMMV. I thought he took a step back. I’ll split the difference with you all and PFF. I still think Gilmore is a good corner but I think you have to acknowledge his risk coming off a quad tear and with his age, going to be 31.
