The GOAT for a QB. A coach that doesn't seem to be a grinder. Great weather and no state taxes. That's a lot of reasons to stay.

The middle two are the reasons I do not expect them to repeat, especially if you are not bringing in new blood. Running it back feels really dangerous.

TB12 is the HC and TB12 is a grinder. I don’t expect them to repeat because the NFL is hard. Would not surprise me if they did.

Modern Pats haven't kept guys long enough to threaten that, over 10,000 means probably 12+ seasons given injuries etc.
Yep. Stanley Morgan’s team record is safe for a while.

Morgan 10,352 yards in 13 seasons
Gronkowski 7861 yards in 9 seasons
Welker 7459 yards in 6 seasons
Edelman 6822 yards in 11 seasons

All bets are off though when the NFL implements a 25 game regular season in 2050.

Could say this about Sam Cunningham too. I always think we're close to seeing someone surpass his total rushing yards with promising seasons from young RBs, but Cunningham is still #1, lol.

Sam Cunningham 1973-1982 5,453
Jim Nance 1965-1971 5,323
Tony Collins 1981-1987 4,647
Curtis Martin 1995-1997 3,799
Kevin Faulk 1999-2011 3,607

The guy to do it could have been Ridley. Nearly 2,500 yards his first three years, then was on pace for 900 yards in year 4 before he got hurt in the 6th game and was never really the same player. Of course they probably would have let him walked anyway as a free agent, but if he was in the 3,000-3,500 yard range through four years and had come back, he may well have broken out.

Yeah, I thought Ridley would be it. Then Sony Michel came along with a great rookie year, & then...well...I suppose it could still be possible if he's re-signs & is healthy as a 1-2 punch. Rooting for Damien Harris to reach 6k.

I'd go back further and say the only player who might've done it was Robert Edwards, as those prime years would have come before the game really changed, and he was good enough fast enough to stack up the carries he'd need to get there. In an alternate history, he gets all the Antowain Smith carries through his 5 year rookie deal and has a decent chance at the record even if they don't re-sign him after that.

If they didn't trade Curtis Martin he would have crushed that record.
They didn't really trade CMart - he was a restricted free agent in 1997. Jets offered him 6/$36m with a poison pill & Patriots were awarded the Jets 1st & 3rd rounders in 1998 draft as a result.

The poison pill would have made CMart an unrestricted free agent after 1 year if the Patriots signed him (voidable by player & couldn't franchise). Meaning if they matched the offer, they risked him walking for no compensation the next year.

This was Bill Parcells' ploy, with the assistance of Mike Tannenbaum, to stick it to the Patriots & forcefully acquire one of his favorite players.

Patriots used the 1st rounder, 18 overall, to draft...Robert Edwards. They used the 3rd rounder, 81 overall, to draft a FB named Chris Floyd. Floyd played into his 3rd season with Patriots, mostly on special teams, before getting cut after way too many penalties on Thanksgiving against the Lions.

Some players the Patriots passed up on at those picks:

Randy Moss (21st)
Alan Faneca (26th)

&

Brian Griese (91st)
Hines Ward (92nd)

The Patriots used their own 1st rounder, 22nd overall, on the immortal Tebucky Jones.

On the bright side, among all the other possible butterfly effects of this stuff, if they had taken Griese instead of Floyd, they might not take a QB in the 2000 draft.

Brady was 3rd string & Griese was 2nd string at Michigan in '96, behind the great Scott Dreisbach, before both jumped Dreisbach in '97 with Griese starting & Brady backing up (& Floyd was their FB).

Just to further go down the rabbit hole, after a key fumble recovery against the Rams in SB XXXVI (& a long run in the park negated by some alleged holding), on April 14, 2003, the Patriots traded Tebucky Shermain Jones to the Saints for a 2003 3rd, 2003 7th & 2004 4th...

(Spoiler cuz way tl;dr)

The Patriots traded that 2003 3rd, #78 overall (which the Saints had originally got from the Chiefs in a Willie Roaf trade), to the Dolphins for a 2004 2nd. The Dolphins drafted Wade Smith with that pick. He had a long & fairly successful career, mostly with the Texans, but the Dolphins cut him after 2 seasons.

They used the 7th rounder, #239, on Tully Banta-Cain, who played for the Patriots for 4 years prior to being signed away by the 49ers for 3/$12m after a 43 tackle/5.5 sack season. No comp pick cuz Adalius Thomas/Donte Stallworth signings.

The Dolphins 2004 2nd rounder turned out to be #56. The Patriots traded that selection to the Bengals for Cory Dillon, who rushed for 345/1,637/12 that season for the Patriots (before 2 final non-descript seasons).

The Bengals selected Madieu Williams @ 56 who went on to a solid, if unspectacular career.

Finally, with the 2004 4th rounder from the Saints, #113 overall, the Patriots took Dexter Reid, who blew a coverage leading to a Greg Lewis TD in Super Bowl XXXIX, & was cut the follow off-season.

LOL the "alleged holding" was a complete mugging by McGinest on Faulk.

Honest question. Maybe the rules expert around here will see this. But is it always holding to tackle the RB involved in a play action fake? It seems like these backs frequently get tackled on play action when a defender is in the backfield quickly, but I seldom see it called holding.

NFL owners vote on the 17-game schedule today. It's expected to pass. 17 games over 18 weeks and 1 bye week. Season starts same time and pre-season goes down to 3 games.

So this means the Super Bowl will now be the second Sunday in February, correct?

That game against the Lions was also notable for something else.

Tom Brady's 1st NFL passes.

Wow, I thought the plan was 2 bye weeks and 2 preseason games. Brutal news for the players.

Curious to see what the breakdown is. John Schneider has been using void years for the first time, so it will be interesting to see if he used some here. This on top of the Gabe Jackson extension, and most of the rest of the offensive band coming back together, makes me feel good about the offense. Pass rush should be improved. They'll probably focus on the secondary with what few picks they have in the draft and find a 3rd WR somewhere.

Can anyone honestly say that they remember him as a Patriot? Or any other team, for that matter.

BB signed him and cut him 3 times in a little over 2 months.
