Wow. The WRs really got squeezed this off-season. Good on Agholor’s agent for striking a deal early.

Did they? I mean, they got the players they wanted on multi-year deals. That some guys took 1 year deals elsewhere doesn't really effect that(also Juju allegedly took quite a bit less money to stay in PIT, much like Andrews stayed at a discount). If Golladay signs for like 3/36 with 22M guaranteed I'll think they mismanaged, otherwise it looks like they picked 2 WRs with different roles that they liked and got them on reasonable multi-year deals.
Yeah, I don't think we can call Agholor's deal reasonable after seeing the money guys like Samuel and Schuster got. Either way it's fine, it won't kill them, but out of all the moves they made, the receiver aquisitions are far and away the ones I'm least excited about.

In addition to what Cellar said, we have no idea what the Patriots might have offered these other FAs. Maybe they offered them the Agholor deal and the WQR/agents figured there was more money to be had elsewhere and passed.

The Patriots clearly intended to move fast this week, so they moved on as well. Or, of course, they just liked Agholor better.

JuJu Smith Schuster resigns with Pittsburgh for 1 year 8 million. The patriots mismanaged the WR market.
It seems clear the Pats wanted a field stretcher. Agholor ranked #2 last year in yards per reception, WAY ahead of Samuel or Juju:

1. Valdez-Scantling 20.9
2. Agholor 18.7

33. Kendrick Bourne 13.6

86. Samuel 11.1

126. Juju 8.6

I thought I remembered someone tweeting about Agholor leading the league in yards per target last year.

I guess they were either wrong or I read poorly. His 10.9 was 6th in the league (Fuller, Higgins, Julio, Justin Jefferson, MVS).

By that metric, Bourne was 32nd (right behind Jakobi Meyers), Samuel was 42nd & Juju was 115th (in the range with Jonnu at 105 & HHenry at 113).

Of course, the concerning thing with Agholor is whether or not this was a breakout season or an aberration... in 2019 he was 114th in yards per reception & 147th in yards per target (surrounded by a bunch of RBs including 4net & Melvin Gordon).

In 2018 he was 71/67.
In 2017 he was 51/44.
In 2016 he was 108/144.

I think he was also first in air targeted yards at 15 and change (IOW, his average target was 15+ yards downfield)

Edit: it makes me wonder if Philly was mis-using him and the Raiders found his best fit

I think they probably got the guys they wanted, but might have paid 20% more than they needed to given where the market ended up.

That's one of the risks of striking early, but not a huge deal in this case.

He played a very different role with his new team, which probably had a major impact, now there is obviously some concern whether he can keep that up with a new team.

Yes we can.
One reason being.... neither of those guys are demonstrably better than Agholor. Juju is in a multi-year production freefall and Samuel is a similarly up and down player to Agholor.
Beyond that, Agholor has a different skillset than those guys, particular Juju. WRs aren't the same, you don't judge in the box safeties against coverage safeties just because both are safeties.

Yeah they are all different players. JuJu plays close to the LOS. Agholor is a true deep threat. He was 2nd in air yards while JuJu was 120.

I honestly don’t know what to make of JuJu anymore. He went from electric to pedestrian when he should be entering his prime. I’m sure some of that is Big Ben’s decline. And air yards are heavily influenced by QB and coach.

Agholor has his issues, no doubt. But with a strong running game, 2 TE and, for now, a running QB, the LOS is already going to be congested. They don’t need another short area receiver.

Kyed pointed out on his podcast that some earlier seasons with Philly he had a lot of downfield yards. It seems they were never consistent in his usage.

May have been due to other guys getting injured and Philly moving him around since he seemingly can play pretty well at multiple positions (similar to, say, Branch or Edelman?)

Reading through the Watson thread, what a bizarre, nightmarish situation Caserio chose for himself. The one great asset the team has - a young elite QB on a cost controlled contract - seems to want out. Fine - at least you can get a draft haul and start the rebuild. Now the accusations are piling up and there’s a good chance you’re not even getting a draft pick, much less a haul. The upside is you have Easterby upstairs and McNair owns the team. Did Dante account for this circle?

Dante S is retired, and staying retired. He's too smart for this dog's breakfast. And this sounds more like the other Dante's Second Circle:

"In the Second Circle of Hell, Dante and his companion Virgil find people who were overcome by lust. They are punished by being blown violently back and forth by strong winds, preventing them from finding peace and rest. Strong winds symbolize the restlessness of a person who is led by the desire for fleshly pleasures. "

They lost Jamie Collins at $10m AAV & they canceled him with some really small contracts coming in. I guess they realized the error of their ways.

And no first round draft pick.

That is the Dante I meant. Heh, I should’ve assumed that Dante S. would be the presumptive in this thread.

That’s like finding a $20 in your couch cushions or something. Nice.
It's more like correcting the cashier manning the fried dough booth at the Topsfield Fair when they short your change and you're not sure if they're bad at math, or if they tried to screw you and hoped you wouldn't notice.

I like my RBs fresh out of college, no wear on the treads. I'm thinking they take a couple in the middle and late rounds.

Quite a "miscalculation" by the NFL. The Pats go from no 5th-round comp pick at all to the front of the line in that round.

Watson has a $40MM+ cap hit in years 2022 and 2023. Rookie contracts are cost controlled. Top five* highest cap hits in the league are not.

Saints and Raiders won’t be docked draft picks due to their COVID protocol violations. That’s surprising to me.

From the NFL: The #Saints will forfeit their sixth-round selection in the 2022 NFL Draft and will be fined $700,000 for violations of the NFL-NFLPA COVID protocols during the 2020 season.

Well, somebody fucked that report up. Either the NFL rep was misquoted or he fucked up.
The issue might be that the PFT story is about 2021 picks, while the Saints are losing a 2022 pick

https://www.nfl.com/news/saints-to-forfeit-2022-sixth-round-pick-pay-700k-fine-for-violations-of-league-c

Just to finish this up, the Raiders were fined only
