Noon today is the start of the "two day negotiating period" - i.e., legal tampering. Official free agency begins at 4:00pm on the 16th. How many teams are NOT already in negotiations with free agents, before the noon "start" of the legal tampering period?

None. Easy enough to say to for example JC Jacksons agents yesterday "we're looking for a ballhwaking number one corner, what do you think the market is for that" and get a rough answer.

Alex Cappa to the Bengals for 4/40, per Schefter. Pretty good money for a guard, but they usually don't hand out much in guarantees and hopefully he's still ascending at 27. Either way, it's a massive upgrade from what they trotted out at RG last year.

Good player. Given the ample cap space Cincy has, this is a great move.

He'll definitely be a big improvement in protection and it was a move that had to be made. I'd like to see them get a little more athletic with the 2-3 other openings. They've been short on athleticism there for a while and the results have shown.

Indy seems like the only potential remaining destination for a Jimmy G trade unless Cleveland is going to jettison Baker.

CAR/NO/NYG/DET/SEA all probably interested if the price is right though 1 of them probably trades for Watson

I actually think Trubisky is a decent gamble. He’ll obviously never live up to his draft status but he has tools, the coaching in Chicago certainly didn’t do him any favors (they always seemed to produce more when Nagy ceded playcalling) and the reports from Buffalo appear to be pretty positive. I’d much rather they have signed an aging retread.

NO can't afford another expensive QB. NYG seems dedicated to another year of Danny Dimes. Seattle and Carolina make sense -- only one of them can trade for Watson.

NO made an offer for Deshaun Watson, so maybe you should tell them they can't afford it.

I figured if he didn’t re-sign, Karras would be on his way to Tampa to replace Cappa/Marpet.

Seems like he might be a decent stop-gap if they decide to draft local boy Pickett.

Bengals Twitter seems to be pretty high on the Karras signing. Any Pats fans want to offer a scouting report?

Solid professional guard whose name you will not hear and someone you won't think about for games at a time. Not that mobile; even if you watch line play pretty carefully you'll rarely see him making a great block especially in the running game, won't see him downfield much or pulling, etc.

edit: also apparently a pretty smart player and a funny guy liked by his teammates.

Thanks - appreciate it. Cappa’s strength also seems to be in pass protection so it looks like they’re going all in on keeping Burrow upright.

BJ Hill is back in Cincinnati at 3/$30. He played really well as a rotational three-tech after coming over from the Giants in the preseason and now they’re betting on that continuing. Larry Ogunjobi is probably a slightly better player but he’s coming off a major foot injury and they couldn’t pay both of them, so I’m happy to get Hill back at this number.

Well that makes the Cooper deal look great

Edit- also makes the deals the Patriots gave out last year look really good. Kirk is young but there is a very good case his year last year was worse than the year Agholor was coming off.
Kirk just blew up the WR market. That’s some huge dollars for a slot receiver.

Jags out here spending Shad’s money in a big way.

Edit: it’s even worse.

Lol ridiculous deal. Both parties are going to be regretting that one within a year.

I really doubt Kirk regrets it, he'll get his guarantees up front then hit the market again in 2-3 years still in his prime having been force-fed targets to justify his money

Well, so much for the Patriots signing any free agent Wide Receivers...

We'll have to see guarantees, but that might be one of the worst deals I can remember at the time of signing. Good lord. Ten percent of the cap for a guy who tracks as an above average-good slot receiver and isn't much of a Red Zone threat?

Oooook...

Thing for the Patriots was....

Were we ever going to sign a WR?

Robinson was always getting overpaid, his performance last year was concerning, OBJ was likely not coming here...

The rest of the class was basically more versions of our current top 3 (Agholor/Bourne/Meyers)... maybe if you trust Chark's health he's a step up? But really it's just variants of the WR2/3 role we already have.

We'll add depth on the cheap probably, maybe draft a guy in the first 3 rounds, but there was never an obvious path to a #1 WR upgrade in FA.

I've felt like the NFL WR market is going to go the route of the NFL RB market in that these dollars are really going to come down hard over the next couple of years. They're passing so much more in college now and that in turn is churning out more and more high quality NFL ready WRs. Much more supply available which should put downward pressure on the demand.

But then I see things like the Kirk contract and realize I don't know squat.

I think that in general, the consensus is WR talent is better and more plentiful than ever. This year’s draft class is loaded.

The Jags are the same team that took Travis Etienne in the first round and decided to try and convert him into a WR. So take their decisions with a huge grain of salt.
