surprised a bit that Trey Smith didn't go in the 6th, wonder if a bunch of teams just gave him an undraftable grade based on medicals

Placekicker in the 7th or FA class - preferably someone who's not a Three Percenter? Jose Borregales? Nick Folk is getting up there.

Ah, I was unaware that Smith had blood clot issues, yeah I bet a lot of teams have him completely off their list.

Even drafting their long snapper? Is there anyone on Bama that hasn't gotten drafted yet?

Of course the Chiefs are the team that stops the Trey Smith slide... of course. Now he's going to be a 4 time pro-bowler

Sometimes guys will declare if they don't think they will get playing time the following season.
Or he was not going to get adequate grades in the classroom going forward?

Small but a pretty good athlete, good 40, good 3 cone, below average shuttle, good broad jump, mediocre vertical.

4.43 40
6.81 3-cone

Both are very good numbers for a WR.

From ESPN: "Nixon has the burst and change of direction to develop into a good route runner. He has the top-end speed to threaten downfield and pick up yards after the catch when he gets a seam. He shows the ability to extend and pluck the ball out of the air, but his hands are inconsistent."

Nixon is pretty good value for the 7th round; I agree with Tannenbaum that he's probably a Z (but UCF moved him around the formation). He runs well enough, but isn't explosive and could use some weight. He's probably a practice squad player, and more refined than Zuber (though not quite as fast). There's nothing special about him (7th round, sure) but there's nothing really disqualifying about him either. Just kind of solid across the board. Little bit of a lost 2020 with the collarbone, but he looked promising in 2019 across from Gabriel Davis (who I really liked last year). He just didn't get the chance to have the big senior year bump, which seems to have cost him.

Decent size and fast, and considered a 5th rounder by NFL.com:
Dangerous three-level talent with speed and short-area athleticism to play inside or outside as a pro. Nixon had impressive flashes over his first two seasons at UCF before playing in just four games this past year due to a shoulder injury. His play strength and hands are both in need of work in order for him to be considered a trustworthy option for play callers and quarterbacks. He has the juice to win foot races deep and displays enough route-running potential to uncover against pro coverage on the first and second levels. Nixon offers intriguing value as a potential Day 3 selection with WR3 talent.

Also, the very rare BB draft with no WTF picks. No long snapper. No 2nd round DB reach. No 5th round STer. Maybe that was the change-up. This was a very conventional draft; a few more home run swings than they typically do (Barmore, Stevenson, McGrone) but those swings were at spots that made 100% sense. No CBs, which was probably my biggest surprise.

wonder how much of that is the limited info. Hard to convince yourself you know something nobody else does when you have so little info on guys.

Maybe being dissed by Robert Kraft recently played into this ("I don’t feel we’ve done the greatest job (drafting) the last few years")

As a note... I hat the Stevenson pick even more knowing we could have gotten Hill at 242 and someone else at 120 (Rochell, McPhearson, Wallace, Darden).

My quick review of the draft.... They came in needing a QB, some help along the DL, an OL, a good RB, and I thought another corner. Here's what they ended up with.

1-15 - QB Mac Jones (Alabama) - Wanted them to move up to get Fields or Lance (Lance was totally unavailable), but was very happy with Jones at 15.
2-6 - DL Christian Barmore (Alabama) - When on his game, he was the most dominant interior DL in college in 2020. Not always there, but has tremendous potential. Good home run swing by BB.
3-33 - Edge Ronnie Perkins (Oklahoma) - SMU hates the pick but I see the logic in it. Ferocious player that can be a game-wrecker. But he might get overwhelmed on the edge due to not being an elite athlete or having great size.
4-15 - RB Rhamondre Stevenson (Oklahoma) - Absolute beast of a RB that can catch and pass protect. I see him as being hard to bring down but I didn't see him just bludgeon guys either. Kind of...slippery for a big guy. Not the kind of RB I thought they'd take but this pick could work out nicely if, as expected, they don't pick up Sony's 5th year option.
5-33 - ILB Cameron McGrone (Michigan) - Young with all kinds of potential. Lots of room for improvement and has some burst and power. Intriguing pick.
6-4 - S Joshuah Bledsoe (Missouri) - Good in the box with decent size and speed.
6-13 - OT William Sherman (Colorado) - Tackle in college, should be a guard in the pros. Seems like he would work out nicely from an athletic and skill standpoint at the guard position. I think he sticks.
7-15 - WR Tre Nixon (UCF) - Fast, agile, makes plays. Nothing elite, but definitely has potential for a 7th round pick.

On the whole, I give BB a solid B+ to an A- for the draft. Some home run swings, got a key guy at a key position of need. Definitely some intriguing selections here that have pretty sweet potential. Looking at it from this vantage point (not knowing what will happen, of course), I think this is one of BB's better drafts in years. That on top of an absolutely blockbuster free agency period, and this entire offseason for him is an absolute, no-doubt A+ effort and performance. Of course, time will tell how well all these moves work out but for now, BB has hit it out of the park. I fully expect NE to be a serious player this coming season and in the next few years with all these moves.

You hate everything though. Haha!
Just messin with you Cellar. You’re informed but grumpy.
I only hate a few things.... RBs early is highest on the list.

I love the Barmore pick, I like the McGrone pick.. I understand but don't love the Perkins pick. I have come around from being meh on Jones (mostly because I think the gap between him and the top 4 was bigger than others) to thinking it was a good pick just because of QB inflation....

I hate RBs before like the 6th round.

Edit- I just don't see how anyone could have seen top RBs go down and late drafted or FA backups pick up 90%+ of the slack and think that RBs have any value except if they are also essentially elite slot WRs too (Kamara, CMC).

deep inside Guido territory
I thought Bill and company had a great draft. They addressed the QB position with a top prospect and not a developmental mid round guy. No one should quiver with the pick because that was the guy they targeted and Mac fell to them at 15. If it doesn't work out, you can't go and say they shoulda-woulda-coulda with Fields because it was apparent they did not think enough of him to go up and get him. Once Fields was picked at 11, it was pretty apparent that Mac would fall to 15 and they got their guy.

They went up and took a swing at a big-time talent in Barmore. Perkins at 96 presented great value, provides depth at a position of strength, and he can develop this year in a niche role without having a lot of pressure on him. Stevenson has big-time potential and adds a lot at RB. We'll see how much they believe in him if they decline Sony's 5th year option. McGrone is a 2022 guy at this point. Bledsoe will probably be a ST guy at first and see where he slots on defense later. Sherman's position is interesting in that he could play guard or tackle in the Wynn-style body type. Nixon has size at 6 foot and has 4.44 speed and a real good 3-cone. At worst, he's an intriguing P-squad guy.

The only gripe is not getting a WR earlier, but it speaks to the coaching staff's confidence in Meyers and/or Bourne to take over the Edelman role.

McGrone may have been my favorite pick for where he went. 2019 as a 19 year old sophomore, I thought his play was in line with Jordyn Brooks, who went in the 1sr last year. He's fast, aggressive, strong blitzer, and a good tackler. Elandon Roberts sized, but significantly more athletic. I'm a fan. Great redshirt pick for a talented 20 year old.

Yeah - McGrone and Stevenson are such fantastic swings. McGrone in particular was a top 100 talent to me and a great scheme fit. They crushed this draft
