If I remember right @SMU_Sox did not like him at all.

I see the value, but honestly I'd have rather had one of the corners, particularly Molden who most places ranked similarly and seems a clearer fit.

FanNation loves him:
Not getting the attention he rightfully deserves, Perkins is one of the more talented pass rushers in the 2021 draft class. Judging by his physical stature, Perkins brings a physicality that can catch opponents off guard. He gets his hips aligned, sticks his outside foot in the group and explodes down the middle of opposing offensive linemen, creating an absurd amount of movement off the bull-rush. Perkins is completely overwhelming at the set point, putting blockers on their back side on more than a few reps throughout his tape. He possesses incredibly powerful and active hands, showing the ability to win after initial contact. There are bad intentions to his game, seeming to take it personally when the opposition believes they can block him. Despite playing a base end with his hand in the dirt the majority of reps, Perkins has shown the ability to rush effectively from a two-point stance. This makes him scheme versatile, which will appeal to various defensive coordinators across the league. He has some absurd closing burst, finishing a lot of reps with sacks or pressures. Perkins is not the longest pass rusher, struggling to get detached when offensive linemen fit inside of him. After a failed drug test prior to the 2020 Peach Bowl that cost Perkins time heading into this past season, teams will need to make sure he checks out off the field. If he does, a selection in the top two rounds is not out of the question. He may be the most talented defender in the draft that most haven’t talked about nearly enough.

I’m sure it’s almost all just coincidence, but still kind of interesting that all three of the Pats’ picks so far this year have been guys who were projected by many to go higher, potentially much higher, than they did. Feels like that is a rarity for a Belichick draft.

I hope this @SMU_Sox knows what the fuck he is talking about :cool:because the Jets got 3 of his top 30. I see he doesn’t rate my handsome QB that highly, time will tell.

Yeah so I get the allure with Barmore. I've written about him and discussed him here quite a bit. I wouldn't have made that move but I get it and Bill has MUCH better info than I do obviously... if Bill is comfortable with that eval and his off-field coachability stuff then that is good with me. It's a home run swing. It makes sense. It's Perkins that I don't get at all. He is undersized, lacks explosion, gets pushed around against the run. isn't a good athlete. He is a divisive guy. With edges if you aren't picked in the first round and are an incredible athlete the odds are much more against you than in almost any position.

Feels almost like the Ravens - how did that guy fall? And then the Ravens make the “obvious” move and we all get pissed.

Longtime rumor here in Pittsburgh is that it was cocaine with Marino, not weed.
That’s what I had thought as well. Marino was the crown prince of Pittsburgh and liked to have a good time off the field.

Two of Miami’s all time draft picks come back to drugs. I’m cool with that.

I am high on this draft so far. It's hard to read @SMU_Sox's writeup on Perkins and be enthused, because I have such respect for his insight. But I read a bunch of other evals on Perkins and those make me excited. Either way, the guy had a grade in the 30s to low 40s by any number of draft eval sites, and they took a swing at him at 96, so it's a chance for great value. If it doesn't pan out, I'm ok with it. Because here's my view coming into the draft.

I felt like BB did such an incredible job in free agency shoring up this team in all kinds of ways, that (1) they only had one GLARING need - QB, and (2) they didn't have a ton of roster space for many new draftees and UDFAs. So I wanted them to take a QB (I preferred moving up for Lance - who turned out to be totally unavailable - or Fields, but I have always been happy with Jones at 15) and then I wanted them to trade up to get other key guys. Now I wanted Elijah Moore in round two but the Jets snagged him before the Pats could realistically move up to get him, so....bummer. But the two defensive guys they did get to me represent guys who have huge potential to be defensive wrecking balls. Those are the kinds of picks I wanted them to take. Now use the rest of the draft to trade for future picks or move up to get one or two more guys they prefer. I still want a WR and OL and CB, and it would be a shock to me if he doesn't draft any OL or CB, though I could see him not taking a WR in this draft.

On the whole, I give BB an A- for this draft, but a huge A+ for the offseason overall. He's absolutely put on a clinic.

PFN analysis on the Pats' first three picks:

https://www.profootballnetwork.com/new-england-patriots-nfl-draft-picks-grades-2021/

Jones: Graded a C. "his inability to drive the ball consistently down the field had even Bill Belichick shaking his head during Alabama’s Pro Day. Jones ranked as the 25th overall prospect on Tony Pauline’s big board, representing a reach at 15." (but they had a huge need and he wasn't lasting til #25)

Barmore: Graded an A-. "Although he received some pre-draft criticism, anyone who witnessed Barmore’s display in the national championship game knows that he can make plays."

Perkins: Graded an A+. "For me, this represents an absolute steal for the Patriots with the 96th overall pick of the 2021 NFL Draft. Ronnie Perkins was one of my highest graded pass rushers."

Grades like this make no sense...as they note, they had a need, and if they did not take him someone else would...but it's a C because he was the 25th overall prospect. That is just stupid.

Also, Trey Lance who they have listed as the 20th overall prospect and was picked 3rd gets an A- rating...

That was my comment in parenthesis - that they had a need and he wasn't going to last til then. So it's like they didn't even understand that.

He must have been pumped to go to Miami as a coke fiend back in those days.

I have to remind myself that players drafted today will all have somewhat significant weaknesses (or else they’d have been picked much higher). So when BB snags someone it will be easy to look at what they can’t do rather than what they can do.

And then I need to further remind myself that BB has gotten a LOT of gems in these rounds, even if the scouting report on them isn’t super encouraging.

This illustrates once again how much of a crap shoot the NFL draft actually is.

The QB they got who a lot of people feel is NFL ready gets a C, Barnmore who an NFL executive claims is going to be a bust due to off the field issues with being late and takes plays off gets an A- and Perkins who one of our most knowledgeable posters hates as a pick and has the evaluations to prove it gets an A+.

Again; a crap shoot.
