I'll never understand how they know where a punt goes out of bounds in the air
The mechanic is that the Referee runs to where the punter kicked the ball and looks at where the ball struck out of bounds. The sideline official runs up the sideline. When he intersects the line between where the referee is standing and where the ball landed out of bounds, the referee signals for him to stop.

That was more of a penalty on Daniels than any of the ones called for Mahomes

So basically looking at a guy 40-50 yards away from you with his arm stuck out, and trying to stand at the point on the sideline where the guy is pointing? Eh, I guess it's not much crazier than 90% of the other referee measurements.

In reality it rarely happens this way. The Referee has responsibility for roughing the kicker and usually by the time it’s impossible for the kicker to be fouled the punt has already landed somewhere. Then the deep wing just guesses and the Referee puts on a show of “stopping him” right where he already decided the spot would be.
