Had you said in fifteen years ago that a New England QB would be on this list, there would have been no option but to assume that Drew Bledsoe's career had somehow since eclipsed Norm Van Brocklin's.

Champ fucking Bailey over Charles Woodson is a fucking travesty.

Art Shell should be in over Bruce Smith, but that is a closer argument.

The Patriots homer in me thinks that #87 is up for grabs when this list is revisited in 10 years.

And let's just go ahead and give Rodney #37.

Edit - my mistake, 37 is assigned to Doak Walker, it's just a different style jersey. Hmm, his bio suggests he might be a hair more deserving than Rodney Harrison.

Meh.  Either way it's a Patriot.

Ozzie Newsome over Raymond Berry for best #82 is a tough call.  I would have gone with Berry.  More Pro Bowls and more 1st team All Pro selections.

They also have Jared Allen in a Bears uniform. But they have Julius Peppers in a Panthers uniform, so there's clearly no consistency for current players.

I don't think you need to be a homer for that one. He's building a resume as the greatest TE of all time.  Longevity is the only real concern, but I think he's already proven that his prime is the best of any TE in NFL history.

Here's a follow up question; best number (in terms of accumulated performance by top players) of all time?

I think #88 with Michael Irvin, Alan Page, and Marvin Harrison.

I think it honestly has to be #12.

I'll second that. That list of honorable mentions is a freaking Who's Who of NFL quarterbacks. That makes them giving the nod to Brady even more impressive.

Brady-Kelly-Staubach is definitely a strong choice. I know I'm missing a few.

The site lists Bradshaw, Griese, Staubach, Kelly and Rodgers as Honorable Mentions.

Funny, I came here to say it should be Terrell Owens.

EDIT: And when all is said and done, it'll probably be Megatron.

I think Irvin over Page is a bigger "upset".

Looking over the list - there's a decent number of Vikings on there.  Somehow this does not console me very much.

Anyways, this exercise got me thinking about other sports. Specifically, who were the best players (in any of the major US sports) by uniform number of all time? I figured that discussion doesn't belong here, so I posted it in the general sports forum.

#6 is surprisingly weak - considering that that's one of the potential QB numbers, it's kind of sad that the best QB to ever wear #6 might be Jay Cutler, and sad that the best #6 ever might be a kicker (Kevin Butler) that wouldn't feature on anyone's list of top 10 kickers of all time.

Tim Brown over Night Train Lane at 81 is the toughest one for me to swallow.

#99 Jerome Brown or JJ Watt are better picks but of course the NFL uses their fall guy.
Also #23 LOL! Brady should change his number to 23 just for trolling purposes.

?? In what world would Jerome Brown and his tragically-cut-short-career a better choice than Sapp? JJ Watt might - and quite likely too - get there some day, but for now Sapp has the best overall career for a #99.

And Troy Vincent really does seem to be the best choice for #23.

I'll agree my homerism came out with Jerome combined with the fact such a despicable player like Sapp made the cut. As for Watt he's already been a 3x Pro Bowl selection in his first 3 years so he's about halfway to Sapp's total and with his average numbers I agree that it is safe to expect he'll be the best #99 soon enough.

As for 23 my point was that it is an unusually weak number. They still could have given it to Marshawn Lynch but maybe number changes were considered by the play of the athlete under each number they used.

#28 belongs to Hall of Famer Darrell Green, IMHO:

That punt return gave the Redskins the lead and the win on the road at Chicago during the 1987 playoffs (Walter Payton's final game.) Three weeks later the Redskins destroyed the Broncos in Super Bowl XXII.

Because I'm a numbers nerd, I decided to look at the jersey numbers of the Superbowl starting quarterbacks.

1: Never worn
2: Never worn
3: Worn by 2 players, record 1-2
4: Worn by 1 player, record 1-1
5: Worn by 3 players, record 1-2
6: Never worn
7: Worn by 7 players, record 5-9
8: Worn by 5 players, record 5-2
9: Worn by 3 players, record 2-1
10: Worn by 2 players, record 2-3
11: Worn by 5 players, record 2-3
12: Worn by 11 players, record 15-12
13: Worn by 2 players, record 1-3
14: Worn by 4 players, record 1-4
15: Worn by 4 players, record 3-2
16: Worn by 4 players, record 7-2
17: Worn by 3 players, record 1-2
18: Worn by 1 player, record 1-2
19: Worn by 1 player, record 1-0

Some 'interesting' facts

Craig Morton is the only QB to wear more than one number in his Super Bowl appearances: 14 in SB V, 7 in SB XII

A QB wearing 12 won 9 consecutive superbowls (SB VI to SB XIV)

A QB wearing 12 lost 5 consecutive superbowls (SB XXV to SB XXIX)

A QB wearing 8 won 4 consecutive superbowls (SB XXVII to SB XXX)

There have been 3 superbowls where both QBs wore the same number: SB VI (12), SB X (12), SB XIII (12)

Poor Jim Kelly

Edit: I had to look up who started for the Chargers in XXIX to keep that streak alive. The name Stan Humphries still barely registers.
