Newcastle 2018-19: Perpetually "For Sale"

Lascelles was left out of England's WC squad. That's ideal, as he can now neither get hurt nor put on a good show and further prompt an offer from a larger club. Sort of the same deal, albeit with a lesser player, with Yedlin. International-caliber players who miss the WC are an oddly specific but useful asset going into post-WC seasons.

Also, sell the team you fat putz.

Newcastle spent the summer acquiring plateaued players in their mid-to-late 20s (F Yoshinori Muto from Mainz; F Salomon Rondon from West Brom; M Sung-Yong Ki and D Federico Fernandez from Swansea) and selling guys in their early 20s (Merino, Mitrovich, Mbemba). This is, to put it mildly, Not The Plan for clubs in Newcastle's position.

Newcastle turned a profit on transfers; in related news Rafa is pissed. So off to a great start.

Look, I recognize that nobody cares. But Almiron looks good, Lascelles is back playing well, they've won four straight at home, and they're up to 13th. Plus Longshaft is going to sell just a ton of shirts based on his provenance (local boy) and surname (penis reference). This is what success looks like until the club is sold, so I'll take it.

I watched a bit of today's match, and Almiron is for real. I knew that he was too good for MLS but those skills translate anywhere. You guys are going to be fun to watch for a while.

Too bad for Newcastle fans, wealthy, oil-fueled owners hate spending money on soccer teams.

A little caution here - Khaled bin Zayed Al Nehayan was rumored to have teamed up with Chinese investors to put in a £2b bid for Liverpool last year. And then he couldn’t show proof of funds. Who knows how serious any of that talk was, and this deal is a quarter of the price. But it’s the silly season...

I poked around and couldn’t find any updates on the proposed sale, either...

I have seen persistent rumors that Newcastle is talking to Anthony Hudson. That is absolutely fucking hysterical.

He certainly has an interesting record as a manager. By that I mean 47 wins, 41 draws, and 74 losses.

Bill Belichick's record in Cleveland was 36-44, plus a playoff win.

edit: to be more than a drive-by, my point is, not every losing-record manager is going to have learned from his experiences and turn into a great manager... but having a losing record alone, in only a few years' work, does not prove someone a permanent failure unworthy of future consideration. Nor does getting hired by a consistently winning team and, miraculously, ending up with a winning record, make them a good manager. You gotta normalize by team funding levels. "Does more with less" is the criterion I'm looking for, which is why I think Eddie Howe is a great manager and that Claudio Ranieri should be getting better gigs than he's been getting (I know - the eye test does matter too).

Never said he sucked, I said he had an "interesting record". And he does, for someone that might be hired to coach a huge PL club.

The context that it was with The Real Maryland Monarchs, Newport County and the Colorado Rapids helps take it from being casually dismissive to specifically dismissive. That is an actively insane resume for a potential EPL coach.

He's basically only a few steps ahead of my title winning turn coaching the U17 Lady Gunners to the indoor title last winter.

This is a club that non ironically appointed Joe Kinnear manager a few years ago. Par for the course.

Sad. Rafa was doing good things without having a whole lot to work with . St James was not a fun place to go in search of points. The PL would be better if if this were a club of stature and not a perennial relegation risk.

They don’t deserve him.

There are rumours today that Steven Gerrard might be under consideration ..

Don’t know what to think of that as he seems pretty settled at Rangers.

His long term ambition is obviously Liverpool but that seems filled for the foreseeable future - Klopp’s contract runs until 2022? (And will be extended if he wants that)

The Newcastle gig is fraught with hassles though. Mind you, like Rafa - if he does well he’s a hero - poorly and Ownership gets the blame.

That's why I'd be interested myself. Managing ManU is a nightmare- nowhere to go but down. A manager who can get Newcastle back into the upper echelons - that guy will have a stand named after him, and if he fails, well, they suck anyway. I'd be up for a challenge like that.
