The lettering looks more like the recent blue lettering just in red, no? The 2000s lettering is brighter red, smaller, and noticeable stitching. The new ones have the larger lettering, flat look, and muted color of the recent roads.

Yes, you can really see the muted red compared to the bright red on the hanging Sox logo on the sleeve. I hope the fix the lettering and numbers to match the Sox.

Yes, although it's possible the original image is just a computer mockup and won't resemble the real thing in terms of colors.

According to UniWatch Blog, this is the Sox' new home alt:

It's much like their Boston Strong jersey of last year.

So no more tomatoes? Excellent.

No piping on the sleeve makes that road shirt look cheap. Yes, I know it has historical precedent, but it looks cheap and not MLB-worthy. The road greys need a little bit of zip.

I think I prefer the "tomatoes".  Something about the city name on a home uniform doesn't work for me.  I thought they were perfect and appropriate for the first game back at Fenway after the Marathon, and would be ideal Patriots' Day specials going forward, but other than that, I'm not a fan.

It's ridiculous to have no outline on front and blue outline in back.  Schizophrenic.  Pick one - I don't care, either would look great - and be consistent.

As for design changes every few years, I'm for it.  If there's a design you don't like, then you don't have to live with it for decades and if there's one you like, you then get to buy the jersey and know it'll come back.  Luckily, the team is steeped in tradition and the ownership acknowledges it, so hot pants, etc. are pretty unlikely.

All that said, the Dressed to the Nines from the HOF is a fantastic resource and equally fantastic are the blue and red stirrups.  Can't MLB make a deal with players to mandate stirrups?  I guess I'm old, but they really make the uniforms distinctive for the sport.

Quick road-uni aside: I love how Jackie Bradley Jr.'s jersey says BRADLEY JR.

Kinda quirky. I mean, JBJ's father wasn't even a ballplayer. He drove a bus. And even Junior just had GRIFFEY on his jersey.

I never quite got that, or why Announcer Boy (especially) always refers to him as "Bradley Jr."

I seem to recall reading somewhere that it's because Bradley prefers it that way.

Exactly.  Like Louis Gossett Jr.  His dad wasn't an actor.  It's not that hard to understand.

Exactly.  Remove the piping from the number.

Aside from the sleeve piping, the next thing the Sox have to do is change their logo (and I know that technically it's their secondary logo):

The word "BOSTON" needs to be in blue. I don't mind that the font is like the Red Sox font, but the red BOSTON looks strange. I haven't been able to get used to it at all.
I prefer the block lettering for BOSTON, but I absolutely agree that the lettering must be blue regardless of font. I hate the logo and I used to love it.

If this is final, it looks cheap. The lettering needs a blue outline, the sleeves need piping, and I freaking hate city names on home unis. I much, much prefer the reds.

The white Boston home unis are clearly going to be worn on Patriots Day.   Since they're the ones the Sox wore on the day honoring the victims of that horrific act, sartorial considerations such as adding blue outlines to the lettering will take a back seat to evoking the spirit of healing the city shared on that day.

Not much to say here, except yuck for the alt home unis with the red "Boston". Tasteless and cheap looking- it's like they couldn't afford another color?

Like Remagellan just said, if they just use them to remember the bombings, then it's appropriate that they wear the same uni.  If this becomes the every Friday outfit, well, they do pretty much suck

I'm not so bothered by the lettering, since it's consistent, but it's odd that the seams don't have the blue lines going through the red stitching. What exactly are the stitches stitching together? If you are going to get rid of the lines, get rid of the stitching too and just have a circle

Really? You liked those button-less, pullover, double-knit shirts?

I cringe whenever I see '75 Series highlights.

I always thought the cream colored uniforms current players/returning players wore recently for special events would make for a great alternate home option.

Man, I didn't think it was possible to have so many strong and insane opinions about a barely noticeable uniform change. It's as if many of you guys are unhealthily obsessed with the Red Sox or something!

This is the only thing I really have an opinion on. It seems like they've brought back almost every old uniform feature from the past except that one. I loved those hats! Of course, I even have a soft spot for the red panel hats, which if re-introduced would probably cause people to march on Fenway with torches and pitchforks.

The blue road jerseys were, IMO, perfect. I'm bummed they went back to red. The Red Sox' shade of bright red and light grey just don't work together for me. Grey and navy blue is perfection.

My first Red Sox cap was a real (i.e. no adjustable back) red crown/blue bill/blue B one that I got back in the 70's when they were standard issue, and  I wore it so often that I could fold it and put it into my back pocket like a handkerchief whenever I was in a situation in which I was required to removed my hat.

So I would be all in on the Sox bringing that cap back as an alternate.  To me, it's not memories of '78 it conjures, but memories of Games 1, 4, and 6 of the 1975 World Series---and some of Game 7.

if that's all, I'm ok with it

I'm on board with the "B Strong" circle on the jersey for Patriot Day this year but I hope they move on and leave it in 2013 going forward.
