Hey folks! We're approaching another draft, and that means...time to try our annual 'think along with Bill' game!

This year's contest is (as per the title) both new and improved. On the 'new' side, please join me in welcoming SMU_Sox as co-host of the contest!

And with SMU's $100 comes a new wrinkle. Not in the draft contest itself, which will continue as it has (see below). But we've decided to add a second stage: newcomer impact. This will allow for a second draft, once the final 53 are announced, and a second payout to the Jimmy Fund, once the season has ended and we can collectively rank all 2019 roster newbies by their on-field impact.

But - that's for another time (and hopefully, another trophy!). With respect to the contest...

You get to name 20 players who you think the Pats will/might pick, plus the charity you think is most deserving of a contribution in your (screen) name. If you leave out a charity name, I'll plug in the Jimmy Fund/Dana Farber.

Scoring is just like previous years: three points for each player selected by the Pats in the first three rounds - 4 for round 4, 5 for round 5, 6 for round 6, 7 for round 7, and 8 pts for naming UDFAs signed by the Pats within 72 hours of the end of the draft. In an echo of sorts from previous years, 3 bonus points if a player on your list gets picked #252 - the "Fleming memorial" (or with whatever pick ends up being the last one made by the Pats in the draft).

Which players will get the opportunity to join the champs? As always, if history is any guide, your guesses will be better than mine...

Let's get the contest in gear! I'd appreciate it if your entry took the form of last name, first name, position, college; your thoughts on the player are optional, but always appreciated.

Free to enter, and bragging rights for whoever picks best - plus SMU_Sox and I will donate $100 to the SoSH charity of choice in the name of whoever wins - and as mentioned, will add a second $100 for the follow-on Newbies pool.

Looking forward to hearing what/who you think the Pats will add through the draft, and why!

Thanks again for taking the lead here mwonow, in our collective annual exercise in humiliation. Think along with BB... what could possibly be hard about that.

I love this contest so much, but I have to confess I don't watch college football and I have no idea who anyone is, but this contest makes the draft so much more interesting simply because the prep work makes me read up on so many different players coming into the draft. So my opinions on players are largely based on John Ledyard (who I guess was fired from The Draft Network for some old tweets that used inappropriate language). My quotes are mostly pulled from that site.

Miller, Christian, DE, Alabama
Hardman, Mecole, WR/PR, Georgia
Hill, Trysten, DT, Central Florida
Morgan, Stanley, WR, Nebraska
Adderley, Nassir, CB/S, Delaware
Mack, Daylon, DT, Texas A&M
Pollard, Tony, RB/WR/KR, Memphis
Warring, Kahale, TE, San Diego State
Omenihu, Charles, DE, Texas
Savage, Darnell, S, Maryland
Willis, Gerald, DT, Miami
McLauren, Terry, WR, Ohio State
Renfrow, Hunter, WR, Clemson
Watts, Armon, DT, Arkansas
Meyers, Jakobi, WR, NC State
Christian, Juston, WR, Marist College
Simmons, Jeffrey, DT, Miss St.
Lawrence, Dexter, DT, Clemson
Bates, Ryan, OL, Penn State
Harmon, Kelvin, WR, NC State

I expect the Patriots to do what they do: move up and down at will targeting players they want, confounding analysts and acquiring future picks. I really think they will trade up in the first round or the second round or both if someone they like drops. I would be very happy if they came out of the draft with two wide receivers.

For this year's contest I tried to focus less on first round players

some quotes about the players
Miller, Christian, DE, Alabama -
balling on special teams... - Miller may not be the most high ceiling edge defender in the class, but he looks like a solid rotational player in the NFL who can play in a variety of fronts and stances while providing some versatility in coverage or as a rusher.
Hardman, Mecole, WR/PR, Georgia -
Mecole Hardman is a dynamic receiving threat who brings great speed to the pro game, his short area quickness and burst are a deadly combination that make him a prominent threat in the right role. Hardman is going to need to live in the slot, where he can have the needed free releases and full 260 degrees of breaks at his disposal. Hardman is a natural ball carrier who can supplement his receiving game with special teams as a primary return player.
Hill, Trysten, DT, Central Florida

Morgan, Stanley, WR, Nebraska - I know he is not related to the O.G. Stanley Morgan, but come on. My pick is based mainly on the name.
Stanley Morgan Jr.'s route running makes him a high-floor prospect. He will uncover against most defensive backs or coverages, and through a full route tree. He projects as a Z-receiver with slot potential, as his frame, shiftiness and knowledge of route running gives him proper versatility. Morgan is a well-rounded prospect with no true weaknesses, but his hands and strength could improve for the next level. With just a shade under 2,000 yards and 17 touchdowns over the last two seasons in the Big 10, he's a reliable and consistent performer. With that in mind, he will fill a complimentary role at the next level, likely that of a WR3, but offers a decent ceiling as well.
Adderley, Nassir, CB/S, Delaware

Mack, Daylon, DT, Texas A&M -
He's the rare run stuffer with the power to re-set the line of scrimmage and the explosiveness to disrupt plays in the backfield as well. Mack may never be an ideal three-down player, which will push his stock to the mid-rounds, but he's capable enough as a rusher that he will be a valuable mid-round pickup for whatever NFL team sees fit to claim him.
Pollard, Tony, RB/WR/KR, Memphis - special teams ace that might go undrafted

Warring, Kahale, TE, San Diego State -
Warring has the quickness and speed of a big wide receiver, but the length of a tight end and the biceps of a greek god. His routes and releases are already surprisingly polished, and while he can improve a bit as a blocker and continue to sharpen his ball skills, the work ethic and football character attributed to him at San Diego State bodes well for him reaching his high ceiling.
Omenihu, Charles, DE, Texas -
Omenihu's length, explosiveness and physicality make him extremely difficult to handle 1v1, both in the run game and as a pass rusher. His growth this season and his versatility to play all over the defensive front are both extremely encouraging from an NFL evaluation standpoint.
Savage, Darnell, S, Maryland

Willis, Gerald, DT, Miami - one of my sons is named Gerald.

McLauren, Terry, WR, Ohio State -
He’s not dynamic in space nor will he make a living mossing cats down the field, but he can win vertically, beat press coverage, separate underneath and finish catches with a defender on his back. McLaurin’s inside/outside versatility and special teams prowess should make him an attractive late day 2 pick whose most productive football is likely ahead of him.
Renfrow, Hunter, WR, Clemson -
His hands are pure glue, capable of catching every type of pass put anywhere around his somewhat limited catch radius. On the other hand, the weaknesses are clear; Renfrow is short, slight of frame, not overly athletic and could struggle to survive the physicality of the NFL.
On day three of the draft however, I want a guy on my team who can catch everything, has unbelievable body control, is shockingly slippery after the catch and thinks the game at a high level. Renfrow won't be for more vertical-based offenses, but in the right system, he can be a difference-making contributor in the short-intermediate areas of the field.
Watts, Armon, DT, Arkansas -
He's not an elite athlete and he won't be explosive enough to be a gap-shooter in the NFL, but Watts can play any inside technique, has the length and technique to eat up blocks at the point of attack and is a legit pass rush threat on long/late downs. He will never be a dominant player in the NFL, but his skill set suggests a top-tier depth player or solid starter/rotational piece who might even get better with more playing time. I'd target Watts in the mid-rounds for teams looking for interior defensive line help.
Meyers, Jakobi, WR, NC State -
An unfinished product who converted from quarterback three seasons ago, Meyers has made impressive progress as a receiver thanks to several natural abilities that have made the transition a smooth one. His ball skills and natural hands are easily the most impressive part of his game, as Meyers can adjust to snag the rock outside his frame or hold on over the middle while taking a shot. He may never be the most explosive separator, but his routes came along nicely this season. Definitely some upside there as he becomes more consistent.
Christian, Juston, WR, Marist College

Simmons, Jeffrey, DT, Miss St.

Lawrence, Dexter, DT, Clemson -
Dexter Lawrence is an obvious fit as a true nose tackle in the NFL. His value as a run defender is tremendous and should lend itself very well to an immediate role in the NFL. That said, his ceiling will be capped by modest pass rushing skills. Look for Lawrence to be a fixture on passing downs and still generate a fair amount of rush production with his size/strength and ability to push the pocket and collapse as a bull rusher. Day one starter.
Bates, Ryan, OL, Penn State -
Bates has started predominantly at left tackle over the course of the last three seasons at Penn State, but his experience flipping to RT and also starting at LG is where his value as a prospect will come into play. Bates has some limited extension and his pass sets can be a bit clunky at times, which compromises him vs. speed. I'd like to see him transitioned to play OG in the NFL and know with injuries he may be slide around the offensive front to provide depth at numerous spots.
Harmon, Kelvin, WR, NC State -
A polished product with great routes and exceptional ball skills, Harmon can dominate the middle of the field with his box-out ability and strong hands, while still winning vertically thanks to his contested catch ability and subtle physicality down the field. The ceiling might not be sky-high with Harmon, and that's ok. What he does well will translate to the NFL, and he has the ability to contribute early thanks to his smarts as a route runner and his elite blocking skills.

This was a project I was involved in looking at potential top 160 fits and where they would fall. Not going to be a huge help if you are trying to grab day 3 guys. Have at it.

That's an interesting table. Are you planning to use the "best fits" as your picks?

Yes but for sake of the strategy to win this exercise I have some day 3 guys I might want to plug in as well. I will post my picks sometime tomorrow. Draftmas is the most wonderful time of the year. For the playoffs I get nervous and excited but the nerves usually rule the day. For the draft it is all excitement. Plus it is fun to put in the work and see what happens from the couch.

I know two guys who I will have on there who aren't day 3 guys are Terry McLaurin and Miles Boykin. I think they fit the prototypes as guys who can play at least X and probably flanker. Nick Easley is a slot option who has adequate deep speed but a great shuttle and 3-cone (it seems like his official numbers were not as good as reported earlier but still very solid for his role).

I'd guess the Pats draft a QB in the top 3 rounds. I have no idea who.

1) Thompson, Darwin, RB, Utah State; Has a knack for finding seams. Sort of Woodheady
2) Williams, James, RB, Washington State;
3) Stick, Easton, WR, North Dakota State; Longshot here, somebody will probably like him enough as a QB
4) Morgan, Stanley, WR, Nebraska; Good routes, I think he's more athletic than he tested
5) Slayton, Darius, WR, Auburn; Willing blocker good competitor, good adjustment on balls, routes are a little sloppy.
6) Myers, Jakobi, WR, NC State; Just okay as a blocker, shows some wiggle running routes, good hands
7)Wesley, Antoine, WR, Texas Tech; Great routes, great hands, limited athlete.
8)Ives, Thomas, WR, Colgate; Routes are inconsistent, but makes good cuts. Good hands.
9)Benson, Trinity, WR, East Central; Slippery. Runs good routes. Does he block? Some ST value
10)Warring, Kahale, TE, San Diego State;
11)Sweet, William, T, North Carolina; Raw, has athleticism to be T but footwork is sloppy. Plays a little nasty. Developmental.
12)Crosby, Maxx, DE, Eastern Michigan; Plays hard, clears T hands, well athletic. Gets pushed out of position.
13)Wren, Renell, NT, Arizona State; Plays high at times, good job setting a base. good run defender
14)Tillery, Jerry, DT, Notre Dame; Quick off the snap. Played a lot of 1 gap. Not sure about scheme fit.
15)Lamar, Trey, LB, Clemson; Instinctive 2 down LB
16)Cashman, Blake, LB, Minnesota; Plays hard, should find home on ST, could cover TE in some packages
17)Ballentine, Corey, CB, Washburn
18)Dean, Jamel, CB, Auburn
19)Rapp, Taylor, S, Washington
20)Redwine, Sheldrick, S, Miami

I like the guys on the list below and happen to think they could be fits for the Patriots too.

1) QB, Will Grier, West Virginia. There are 3 guys I think fit for the Pats. Of those three I like Will "The Thrill" the most.
2) QB, Jarrett Stidham, Auburn, perhaps miscast at Auburn but he looks the part. Unlike Daniel Jones who I will throw my laptop out the plane window if they draft him at 32 (My dumb ass forgot Thursday night was round 1 of the draft when I made those go back home for Greek Easter plans).
3) QB, Ryan Finley, NC State. BB has been investing time at NC State. He checks all 7 of the old Parcells rules and is the best timing and anticipation prospect of these three. I am not a Finley guy but if he could make it anywhere it would be here.
4) WR, Nick Easley, Iowa. Slot guy who either tested at insane agility or great agility. Leader and captain. His RAS intangibles score is 9.9. Comps to Derek Jeter.
5) WR, Terry McLaurin, THE OSU, X/Flanker with good skills beating press. Decent route runner. Special teams guy. Leader. Prototypical Patriot. Urban Meyer guy.
6) WR, Miles Boykin, Notre Dame, familiar with the coach, he's a prototypical X/flanker/maybe-slot. He has great breaks, ridiculous athleticism. Ceiling as high as any in the class. I'd argue he has a higher ceiling than "3-Route" (Lombardi's nickname for D.K. Metcalf).
7) WR, Stanley Morgan Jr., Nebraska. Another binkie. He's actually a prototypical Patriot too - eats, lives, football, would play ST, athletic profile matches and he might be a decent blocking option too - he gets after it. 8.62 RAS. His deceleration to acceleration is sick.
8) OT Yodny Cajuste, West Virginia. Patriots like athletic tackles when they go 1st, 2nd round. Yodny is athletic. Brandon Thorn likes him, TDN guys like him, he has mental toughness, and athleticism to get to the next level. I haven't looked at him because I didn't get around to OL but he might be the surprise pick in the 2nd.
9) OT Max Scharping, Northern Illinois, they need a tackle. He's another guy who might fit the bill. He's huge and has decent lateral mobility for a man of his size.
10) TE, Dawson Knox, Ole Miss. He is a perfect match with the Patriots athletic profile. He has decent blocking but he's raw. Ole Miss did him a disservice. He has all the traits they would want. He's a former QB and highly intelligent.
11) TE, Kahale Warring, San Diego St. Meets or exceeds most of their athletic thresholds and is a quick learner. He runs routes well for a guy who was better known for his water polo. He is raw too but high ceiling.
12) TE, Foster Moreau, LSU. Perhaps George Kittle 2.0? Underutilized at LSU but great athletic testing.
13) DL/Edge Anthony Nelson, Iowa. You want to design the prototypical Patriots edge? It's this guy. Iowa connection helps. He is a long edge who should get more powerful. Great bend for his size but didn't always demonstrate that. His #1 comp was Chandler Jones.
14) DL/Edge Charles Omenihu, Texas. His number #1 comp is Chandler Jones too. Very long, not quite as explosive, powerful, great hands. Can be an interior sub rushing tackle.
15) DL/Edge, John Cominsky, Charleston. If they miss out on Omenihu or Nelson Cominsky is a later round guy who fits that profile.
16) Edge/LB, Justin Hollins, Oregon. He and Jahlani Tavai remind me of Kyle Van Noy a bit. Positional flexibility.
17) OG Hjalte Froholdt, Arkansas, later round guy who is athletic at guard.
18) S, Sheldrick Redwine, Miami. Good athletic profile, plays ST, has versatility.
19) WR/RB Jalen Hurd, Baylor. Top 30 visit and an intriguing CP84 kind of swiss army knife. Not the same caliber athlete.
20) CB Joejuan Williams, Vandy. Top 30 guy who is a huge press-man corner with nice CoD skills.

I got to present the above board as well as talk about some of these guys with Mascho on the Locked on Patriots podcast which will air on Thursday (or late Wednesday night). That was part of the main board charitable auctions. Happy Draftmas eve New England :)

I tried to think about roles first and then work from there, which led to probably doing a bunch of weird dumb things. I went with one more obvious guy and one option no one else picked for each role:

Dortch, Greg, WR, Wake Forest - Slot / PR
Johnson, Diontae, WR, Toledo - Slot / PR
Williams, Joejuan, CB, Vanderbilt - Big CB
Johnson, Isaiah, CB, Houston - Big CB
Pollard, Tony, RB/WR, Memphis - KR
Young, Marquis, RB, UMass - KR
Boykin, Miles, WR, Notre Dame - X WR
Arcega-Whiteside, J.J., WR, Stanford - X WR
Grier, Will, QB, West Virginia - Depth QB
Haskins, Dwayne, QB, Ohio State - Depth QB
Nelson, Anthony, DL, Iowa - Versatile DL
Ray, Wyatt, Edge, Boston College - DL
Takitaki, Sione, LB, BYU - ST LB
Hall, Terez, LB, Missouri - ST LB
Moreau, Foster, TE, LSU - Prototype TE
Brown, Keenen, TE, Texas State - Prototype TE
Howard, Tytus, OT, Alabama State - Swing OT
Anderson, Calvin, OT, Rice (OK, Texas, but he transferred from Rice) - Swing OT
Redwine, Sheldrick, S, Miami - Depth S
Wiley, LaDarius, S, Vanderbilt - Depth S

I don't know how I did compared to everyone else, but I think this is the first time I've nailed anyone other than an obvious highly-rumored pick. I was one of the two to get Froholdt and Meyers, and the only one to get Cowart and Beck. I'll take that any day.

I'll need 'til end of week to do the analysis, but you trumpted by Joejuan +, uh, maybe UDFA? pretty handily.

I have chosen several players from various Mock drafts. I have no idea who they are, if they fit the Pats way or if they have more than 10 fingers. I never heard the name of any of the guys, besides Will Grier.
Welcome, guys! :redwine:

Allegretti, Nick, C, Illinois --> Chiefs (#216)
Allen, Zach, DE, Boston College --> Cardinals (#65)
Anderson, Rodney, RB, Oklahoma --> Bengals (#211)
Bunting, Sean, CB, Central Michigan --> Bucs (#39)
Cashman, Blake, LB, Minnesota --> Jets (#157)
Dortch, Greg, WR, Wake Forest --> Jets (undrafted)
Grier, Will, QB, West Virginia --> Panthers (#100)
Keke, Kingsley, DL, Texas A&M --> Packers (#150)
McGary, Caleb, OT, Washington --> Falcons (#31)
McLaurin, Terry, WR, Ohio State --> Redskins (#77)
Monteiro, Aaron, OT, Boston College --> undrafted FA
Morgan, Stanley, Jr., WR, Nebraska --> undrafted FA (signing with Bengals?)
Redwine, Sheldrick, S, Miami --> Browns (#119)
Renfrow, Hunter, WR, Clemson --> Raiders (#149)
Saunders, Khalen, DT, Western Illinois --> Chiefs (#84)
Smith, Saivion, CB, Alabama --> Jaguars (undrafted)
Sternberger, Jace, TE, Texas A&M --> Packers (#75)
Sutherland, Keaton, G, Texas A&M --> Bengals (undrafted)
Sweeney, Tommy, TE, Boston College --> Bills (#228)
Weber, Mike, RB, Ohio State --> Cowboys (#218)
0/20 on the Pats.
2 Chiefs, 1 Cardinal, 2 Bengals (3?), 1 Buccaneer, 2 Jets, 1 Panther, 2 Packers, 1 Falcon, 1 Redskin, 1/2 undrafted FA, 1 Brown, 1 Raider, 1 Jaguar, 1 Bill, 1 Cowboy. Clueless...

I like the guys on the list below and happen to think they could be fits for the Patriots too.

17) OG Hjalte Froholdt, Arkansas, later round guy who is athletic at guard.

20) CB Joejuan Williams, Vandy. Top 30 guy who is a huge press-man corner with nice CoD skills.
Bravo

I think Dollar won the contest but a lot of us did very well. Congratulations everyone who entered! I think we as a board did pretty well on identifying who they might be interested in. Aside from the punter at least someone had each draft pick and kudos to Dave and Dollar for great UDFA picks.

I’ll work with @mwonow and make sure we get paid up for this contest. Will also be giving some money for my own guesses.

Congratulations @Dollar! You had 4 correct Froholdt, Cowart, Beck and Meyers for 25 points. Did you have a specific place in mind or to the usual?

2019 NFL Draft Champion: Dollar. He was on the money. Waka waka.

Haha, thanks SMU! I'm sending along a PM (the usual Jimmy Fund donation is preferred!)

I wish I could say I spent hours and hours combing through prospects to come to my decisions like some of the amazing posters in this forum, but in all honesty I did spend a little time trying to find the sort of players that BB and Co. tend to target (a 6-3 TE from Texas that reminded me of David Thomas, a physically impressive but underproductive DT that reminded me of Ron Brace, a huge European OT like Vollmer, and a David Givens clone.) So basically I was really lucky.

Thanks for running the contest!
