Doesn't the result sort of justify Self's decision? Maybe he knew better.
It was always justified imo. Kansas gains nothing by giving the Shockers the opportunity to hand them a non-conference loss. College scheduling has to have a mutual benefit or the game doesn't get made. That's why the powers pay the non-threatening low-D1 schools (and D3 schools) a nice game check for going on the road to get slammed. It's a win-win which wouldn't be the case for Kansas in this matchup.

Izzo has another great chance to get to the Elite 8 playing the winner of Dayton-OU.

Archie Miller is going to get some fat offers with how he gets the max out of his Dayton squad.....in your face defense, compete for 40 minutes and knock down your 3's. His recipe works.

Elite 8? Try Final Four. Louisville simply isn't all that good, and they can beat UNI too.

I agree. I was talking one game at a time though.

As a Friar fan this is tough to swallow. We had as good a chance as anyone with our draw in this region.

Try being a Nova fan. Sick to my stomach that they picked last night to have their worst shooting performance of the season. Oh well, that's what's so great about the tourney.....one and done.

Gonzaga up by 17 at half. This is the Zags team I remember from earlier this year.

IMHO, I don't think this would be as big a win for Wichita if Kansas had played and beaten them regularly when Wichita wasn't as good. They could just say, so what, it's only one game. It would just be a big blip.

This is Few's best team and my Bracket winner. As much as I love this UK team shot makers can upset them.....or at least give them a run.

It isn't only one game though as MUCH more is at stake in future recruiting wars. It doesn't make any sense for Self to open the door for Wichita State in giving them what essentially amounts to a free roll. These are big money wars not friendly neighboring school we are talking about here.

HRB, I don't think that's what he's saying.  What he's saying is that because Kansas hasn't played Wichita State, Wichita's win today takes on even more meaning in the recruiting/money battle than if Kansas had played them and beaten them regularly.  Instead of Kansas being able to say, "So what, we had a bad day, we're still much better than them considering we'd beaten them 9 times in a row before this," Wichita now has the high ground in the war.

Maybe splitting hairs here because Wichita's definitely got one of their best teams ever, but they've been at least pretty good for over a decade now. They easily could've made the Final Four the George Mason year (2006?).

Because Pollard is an abysmal free throw shooter.  Like early years Shaq level bad.  I don't know why teams don't hack him pretty much every time he touches the ball.

Oh yeah, going forward it makes no sense for Kansas, no matter the outcome of the game because Wichita has been good of late. However, the last time they played was 1993. Wichita had one tourney appearance between 1988 and 2012; they weren't in the same galaxy as Kansas during that span, so the game would have been a win-win. if Kansas had played them regularly over that time and lost once or twice, 1 win for Wichita in the tourney, while significant, wouldn't mean as much as it does when Kansas refuses to play them (for understandable reasons). edit Looking at the scores, KU pounded them when they last had a series. They probably had sure-fire wins until Wichita got better in the mid 00s

Ahh I agree with this. I was responding to the post saying that Kansas should schedule the game and if they lose it's just one loss because it is much than that at stake. Self has no reason or benefot to making this a rivalry game. Lose a couple in a row and it could cost him his job as well.

Edit: ok now catching up. I still vehemently disagree that Kansas should have even opened up the can of worms by scheduling them even when they sucked......it doenst make sense to even give your local opponent that opportunity. Nobody can anticipate an NCAA matchup game 15 years from then.

If KU lost once or twice when the Shockers sucked you are elevating your neighbors program. Again, no benefit for KU to ever have done that.

Five years ago, the concussed kid probably is back on the floor. Good for Maryland. Tough situation though.

WVU might match up better than anyone else against Kentucky. Fast, long and very physical. They'll still lose by double digits but should be a decent fight early.

Why did Maryland get rid of that sweaty coach? He was good. They used to beat Duke with him and should have more except for the refs didn't let them, and he even won a championship.
