Red Sox draftee Stephen Scott goes ya-ya in the bottom of the first, Vandy 1, Miss St 0. Earlier Louisville sent Auburn packing for the year by downing them 5-3 in the resumption of a game that was postponed by rain yesterday.

Louisville was down 3-0 to Mississippi State in the bottom of the seventh in an elimination game and has scratched out two runs. 3-2 Miss St. with two outs in the bottom of the sevent, runners on the corners. Win or go home...

Louisville ties up the game 3-3 in the bottom of the ninth after a lead-off walk, a errant pick off throw to first and a bloop single to left centerfield. Nobody out with a runner on second...

And Louisville walks it off with another single to CF that scored the winning run. Awesome for them but brutal for Miss St. who couldn't hang on. Do or die baseball rocks...

Michigan 7, Vanderbilt 4

Michigan’s Tommy Henry struck out 8 over 8-1/3 innings.
Henry was incredible today. Despite that impressive pitching line, he was getting pinched at the bottom of the zone too. Vandy's lineup is really good too, hitting for contact and power with few gaps 1-9.

That being said, I am excited as hell to see Kumar pitch tonight.

Will be interesting to see how Michigan handles the pitching tonight. My guess is that Criswell starts and will be allowed to throw no more than ~80 pitches, less if he's not effective with all sorts of relievers getting 1/3, 2/3 or an inning to get to the end. Kaufmann starts G3 if necessary.

Michigan might throw a bullpen game and save both Kaufman and Criswell for tomorrow if necessary.

NCAA Baseball seems like a different animal. I would've tried to hold Criswell back yesterday, but it seems like he's still an option to throw 50+ pitches today. In any event, Bakich has the benefit of the doubt ATM.

I see what Bakich is doing in this tournament as similar to what Cora did in the playoffs last year. Try to win every game. Worry about tomorrow tomorrow but try to win each one. Normally I'm way more conservative but after watching it work last year (and this for Michigan so far) I'm all in.

Me too. I’d have brought in Keiser, not Criswell yesterday. But yes, Bakitch sure seems to know what he’s doing.

And as we write, Isaiah Page announced as the Starter tonight. Page has 5.1 IP in the postseason [tiny clap]. Looks like Bakich is going to play a wait-and-see approach to the first 1-2 times thru the Vandy lineup. If UM is up or within striking distance, he will put in Criswell and go for the W. If UM is trailing early, he will roll Criswell into G3 and have both him and Kaufmann available.

In the regionals, super-regionals and 1st round of the CWS, there were days off between games. Especially if you won. Now, the Michigan-Vanderbilt 3-game series is Monday-Tuesday-Wednesday (if necessary.)

Bakitch using Henry and Kaufman with the third starter Criswell in relief has worked up to now because those two were always ready to start. (Except when Henry was sick in LA.) But it might have been better to have saved Criswell for today’s start against Rocker and pitch Kaufman tomorrow on four days rest. We will see.

I’ve been pulling for Michigan to pull this thing out and win it. Would be a fun story.

But! Then I noticed tonight that the piping down the leg of their pants seems to end at the knee. There are little to no words for that type of baseball aesthetic monstrosity. They deserve a pants based loss tonight.

Stupidity should have consequences.

Blame Nike. Lots of teams wear a version of that uniform with the stupid short leg stripe. And it’s weird to criticize Michigan’s unis when all of Vandy’s uniforms are atrocious.

I completely agree that Vandy's uniforms are atrocious and ugly. Especially what they wore last night. However, as ugly as it was it still managed to achieve some very low baseline expectations I have for uniforms. I'm an old fogey that believes uniforms should be symmetrical and have design elements that are complete and do not cut off for no reason.

I agree. I’m a uniform traditionalist too. But I’d add “no black pants” to your list of “don’ts.” Actually I’d go further and say no colored pants at all. White, off-whites, grey and maybe light blue are acceptable.

Have to think the light-on-light Vandy unis tonight are worse than UM's contrasting blue on white.

Anyway, Vandy's pitcher looked over-adrenalined in the first inning, but he settled down well. Vandy's lineup is relentless. Sox have a 10th round pick in there. Have to hope the Wolverines can manufacture some runs and win a 3-2 or 4-3 game with Kaufmann handing off to Criswell. If Vandy puts up 5+ runs, it's definitely over and even if they get to 4 it might be enough. 3 or less and I like Michigan's chances.

Welp, Commodores hang a 3-spot to take a 4-1 lead. Wolverines need to lock it down and chip away, don't see any other way this ends with a Michigan W.

This ump can go fuck himself. Too scared to punch out the Vandy kid on a low strike and now he calls two even lower pitches strikes against Michigan.

Made lots of bad calls both ways. But squeezing Kaufman in the third inning gave Vandy three runs and knocked Kaufman out early.
