Don't tease me with Curry Smart Brown Tatum Green.
Its almost certainly never going to happen. But lovegtm is right in that the Warriors should be looking to engage with a team that is close but still has tradeable assets in terms of picks and contracts that can make things work.

However the problem is that the Warriors fanbase would likely react very negatively to any deal involving Curry. I don't doubt that the franchise improved their revenue potential by moving from Oakland to San Francisco overall but, in some ways, they have put the team in a bad position by having to be relevant to keep the corporate ticket buyers coming through the doors. A few 30-handle win seasons with no real star player isn't likely to satisfy that objective.

The problem with this new set up is that the core Warriors fans - those who could make it to Oracle without blowing up their budget or having to navigate a long commute to the arena - are essentially priced out of the market so a rebuild comes along with the prospect of a very empty brand new Chase Center.

I just don't understand what kind of trade makes sense for a player like Curry. The Warriors would need back a lot of picks and probably at least one very good young NBA player. If I'm New Orleans or Memphis, I'm not punting on Zion or Ja due to their age and cost control, so those kinds of prospects are out the window. A team like the Nets or Philly don't have the young assets to get it down. The only options to me would be desperate teams with a reasonable war chest, like if Sacramento offers Fox, draft picks and salary filler for Curry, or maybe Minnesota if they put Edwards on the table.
Suns would have made sense before Paul.

Wes Iwundu suprisingly not given a QO. A name to keep an eye on for a possible bench role, guy can really defend.

Fvck yeah. Not giving up on this year! (Or trading Steph, lol).

Still got the $9.3M disabled player exception plus the $6M taxpayer MLE to play with, too. Lacob’s gonna feel the pain in his pocketbook, but they’re not punting a year of Steph’s prime.

As far as what the Warriors might dangle in trade: one mild benefit of the Klay tragedy is that it may have marginally increased the value of the Warriors own first round draft picks, which they own all of, in addition to Minny’s 2021-2022 pick. One lightly protected first rounder might be enough for a year’s rental of Oubre, no?

A Curry trade that might work...(checking the ol' NBA trade machine...)

GS gives: Curry, Chriss
Ind gives: Oladipo, Turner, 1st rounder in 2021, 1st rounder in 2022

So the Pacers then have Brogdon, Curry, Lamb, Sabonis, and Warren as a starting lineup. The Warriors have an extra big now in Turner (given that they just drafted Wiseman), but that gives Wiseman a little room to grow. The extra first-round picks work, and it's not like Oladipo is a bad player; quite the contrary. They might be able to be pretty decent with a team of Oladipo, Wiggins (who isn't great but does have some use), Draymond, Wiseman, Burks, Paschall, and Turner. But the key would be that in the next two years they'd have:

2021
- Their own first and second round picks
- Minnesota's first round pick (protected) and second round picks
- Indiana's first round pick

2022
- Their own first and second round picks
- Indiana's first round pick

I don't know that Indiana would do that, but they're pretty close now, and Curry is still elite, which Oladipo and Turner are not. Golden State could be set up for the future with a move like this, especially with Klay hopefully coming back in 2022 (though no guarantee, obviously).

But you guys are right - dealing Curry is really tricky for them for lots of reasons.

Apparently “light years” was a reference to how much higher GSW values Kelly Oubre than the rest of the league does.

Oubre and Wiggins are both 33% career 3 pt shooters. Can we call them the Trash Brothers?

I mean, they needed to either use the $17M Iguodala TPE or lose it. The alternative was to sit tight and go into the season badly deficient at the most important position in the league, effectively punting one of Steph’s few remaining prime seasons.

Instead they put together arguably the most athletic wing tandem in the league, for their many flaws. Two 24-25 year-old, 7’+ wingspanned athletic freaks coming off the best seasons of their careers. Both capable of putting up 20 ppg with ease, both (hopefully) capable of stepping up their games and improving their mediocre efficiency in a better system built around Steph.

Was there a better target out there? On Ws boards, people have been eyeing Oubre with the TPE for a while, but unsure whether Lacob would have the financial balls to let Myers use it. You’ll hear no complaints among Warriors fans that he bit the bullet. Isn’t that all you can ask of an owner?

Your recap of the warriors situation makes me suspicious. You sound like an account executive in their sales department.

This may be a dumb question, but I couldn't readily find the answer. Where does the luxury money go? It's not used for revenue sharing, right? So it goes back to the league, but the only answer I could find is that it goes to 'other purposes'. Does it help finance the running of the league as a whole?

EDIT: To answer my own question, it is used for revenue sharing, distributed among the non-tax paying teams. Nevermind!

Haha, I wish. Just a fan, alas. I think I speak for the vast majority of Ws fans when I say I’m stoked with the Oubre signing, though. It just sucks that he’s gonna be the second wing on likely 5-8 seed without Klay as opposed to the third wing on a title contender with him. Sigh.

Well without Klay's injury, he wouldnt be on the team so just be stoked for option A you presented.

I think he would be. He was taken into the Iguodala TPE that was about to expire and they were shopping for someone in that slot before Klay got hurt.
They might also add someone via a DPE that I assume they will get next week (maybe tomorrow, but I think the paperwork takes time.

Yeah, I think Oubre was coming to the Bay either way. Fwiw, in the local GSW draft preview (just before the horrific Klay news broke) Chris Mullin was licking his chops at the thought of the Ws adding not one but two fellow sinister southpaws in Wiseman and Oubre.

I really like Oubre, very good defender who has made significant strides on offense each year he has been in the league, despite being in some pretty crappy situations for a young player with two loser franchises. I also really like the Wiseman pick, tons of potential. Should be put in a position to succeed in Golden State.

I'm very interested in seeing how successful Curry can be as the only real offensive star on an NBA team. The league is so different from when GS originally blitzed the league in 2014, teams are so much better equipped to handle small-ball and almost every team shoots a ton of threes. The Durant addition masked the fact that tactically, the league was catching up to the Warriors, and now even though I believe Curry is just as good as he was in 2014, he might not be as effective. The durability of him night-in and night-out is also a big question mark. I think if he stays healthy and the team wins 45-50 games and makes the playoffs, it will be a really great season for him.

No knock on Oubre who is definitely a good addition for the Warriors but oof the tax bill on that trade is simply staggering. They are effectively paying the equivalent of a four or five year contract for one season.

I'll repeat what I said last season about Steph (without Klay). He's f@cked. He will try too damn hard to keep the Warriors relevant and will get injured. He can't do it on his own. Too small and fragile to be a 1-man gang.

Expect more helpings of Eric Paschall, superstar 2nd year wing

OKC trading Adams to the Pels for... more draft picks.

I have no clue who besides Al and SGA is even on that team anymore, but they have roughly 93 draft picks over the next 6 years including a bunch of 1st rounders from 2 teams that could easily be about to blow up.

It's a great situation to be in, but they're going to have to make sure to consolidate those at some point. People made way too much of the "Ainge has to trade his top-3 Nets picks!", but having 4 #1s/year + #2s logjams in a big hurry.

If they're good picks then can probaby just keep kicking the can down the road and trading a 1st for a future 1st from someone else and have 2 1sts every year for like the next 10 years by the time this is all done.

Or they hope SGA becomes a star and then they have more ammo than any 2 teams combined to trade for the next disgruntled superstar that wants out.

As we saw with the Celtics this year and last, those kick-the-can deals are harder to set up than you'd think.

This is a qualitatively different amount of draft capital than we've ever seen a team have over a long period, so stuff will get a little weird imo.

same can be said in 2016

picks have to be traded early for players or keep the right picks to build via draft
