Here
I’m just assuming he’s done, and I’ll take anything beyond that. Joe called it a “serious injury.”

Does Luka do this to JB if his chest isn't actually hurting? that is some severe frustration, and literally nobody seems to have noticed. including Jaylen

I’ve been saying this for two series now but this guy can barely move out there yet Celtics fans think he’s faking? It’s insanity and he’s still scoring at will in a NBA Finals with all the attention to boot. News broke today that he took another shot prior to G2 for numb the area of his thoracic contusion and will take another prior to G3.

KP is apparently walking around without a boot or a limp and is smiling. I would imagine he thinks that there’s a pretty good chance that he plays

So assume he’s done. The Mavericks still need to go four and one in order to win the series. The Celtics just need to go two and three to win it. Keep in mind that they beat the Mavericks earlier this year without Porzingis but the Mavericks weren’t quite the same team at that time. This is going to be interesting if Dallas wins game three.

I wouldn’t be surprised to see him sit in G3 with the 2-0 lead. If this occurs and we win I’d guess he sits G4 too.

Odd that Mazzulla is describing it as "serious" when he's listed as day-to-day and walking around fine and smiling (the latter is admittedly a bit of projection as to what Celtics fans want to hear).

However I would imagine that back in October a lot of people would have taken a 2-0 lead in the Finals before Porzingis gets hurt if you had offered it.

Here's a diagram that means zero to me. I thought the retina was in the eye? :)

84031

More from this website: Medial Patellar Retinaculum (elsevier.com)

"The medial patellar retinaculum is a fibrous expansion comprising of superficial and deep layers (Starok et al., 1997).
The superficial layer refers to a confluence of fascia which arises from several sources, including the lowest fibers of the vastus medialis muscle, the vastus medialis oblique tendon, sartorius, and the medial collateral ligament.
The deep layer has contributions from three distinct fascial thickenings. The largest contribution is from the medial patellofemoral ligament, which extends from the adductor tubercle on the femoral condyle to medial patellar margin, where its fibers fuse with the vastus medialis oblique tendon. An additional and important contribution arise from meniscopatellar and patellotibial ligaments. The former extends from the patellar margin to the medial meniscus, while the latter extends from patellar margin to the anteromedial aspect of the tibia."

Panic time would be the series going back to Boston 2-2 and KP being ruled out for Game 5. We aren’t close to that yet though. They can/should be able to win two more games, and this doesn’t change the fact that Luka is pretty injured himself.

Here
Porzingis is saying it happened before he started hobbling around (very early 3rd). Then I think he rolled his ankle again AFTER that, which is when he started hobbling?

This guy…

This injury was explained to me like this. It is the exact same tendon sheath injury that Curt Schilling had in the 2004 ALCS/WS except KP's injury is to the inside of his ankle and Curt's was to the outside. Surgery may be required at some point. I really don't know how KP is going to play the rest of the season. If he does, it's with major pain killers/Toradol and him just gutting it out for a few minutes a game.

Reading between the lines it sounds like this is a bad injury but not necessarily one that could get worse by playing on it for the next week?

I imagine he’s getting surgery as soon as the season is over

The Google machine for me is indicating this is something that requires surgery.
Every day this team mirrors the ‘86 Celtics more and more. Jrue now stepping up like DJ and Porzingis’ lower body making Bill Walton seem like Cal Ripken (without looking I don’t think Walton missed a single game that season).

I wouldn't put it past Joe Mazz to call it serious  ... with KP still playing

Mavs/Kidd have been playing games with Luka questionable, a mummified Luka pre-game, and Jaylen > Tatum

Everything I read about this seems to suggest he’s absolutely done.

Perhaps the ankle turn happened later BECAUSE of this other thing. Was it the same foot?

Scoring at will? He was 3-8 and 5 TO in the 2nd half of game 2.

The number of comically wrong social media posts on this injury already is funny. Holy smokes. This really separates the clowns from people who know that they are talking about.

A few quick thoughts:

- rare injury, though I have seen it a handful of times

- this is an injury to the thin “ligament-like” band that holds on the the medial ankle tendons behind the inner side of the tibia, the medial malleolus (That bump you feel on the inside of the ankle).

- if torn, the tibialis poster tendon can side in front of that bump instead of staying behind. That’s the “dislocation”.

- I’m the short term, he can probably try to play, though might be painful and feel awkward. Likely decreased mobility

- most likely will require surgery in the offseason though no big rush

- this is essentially a “reverse Schilling”. Schilling tore the peroneal retinaculum on the outside of the ankle allowing the peroneal tendons to slip out of place. Same idea here, but different tendon on the inside of the ankle.

- crazy bad luck for KP. I hope he can play a bit and be an upgrade of kornet/Tillman. But we’ll see.

Do I get DRS' $10 for explaining it correctly too? Haha!

Sounds like what I hypothesized is true...

It's a pain management thing, the injury won't get any worse so he can give it a run and play. Will likely have to get surgery as soon as the season is over.

Just knowing human nature, I don't think there's anyway a guy (who has never won a title or come close to the Finals before) is going to be walking around smiling and laughing if he was told that his season is done

Pretty much everyone in the league has had key injuries luck this postseason, except I guess Minnesota, and depending on what you think of Luka's injuries? Finding ways through that is a part of getting to the title.

At least it's the guy the Celtics have the most experience playing without, against the western contender they have the biggest advantage against.

He’s most likely faking to some degree, at least the knee and ankle stuff. He has no diagnosis and it’s not getting better with rest and they won’t say anything about it. Why?

The far more absurd thing is the made for TV 5 minute full body pre game wraps that would help 0% regardless of the severity of any injury.

In this series:
  • 44 minutes w/KP, Celtics are +25
  • 52 minutes without KP, Celtics are even
But if you take out the 5 minutes of game 1 garbage time, Celtics are +7 in 47 minutes without KP

Not enough minutes to matter.

Options without KP:
  • Al is averaging 29 minutes per game, he can take a few more
  • With Al on the bench, Kornet and Tillman can play, but neither is a 5-out player. The Celtics could go small (Tatum at 5), but that would mean more min utes to Hauser, who has sucked for much of the playoffs, or Pritchard in 3 guard lineups.
I think they need to prioritize defense and therefore go with Tillman as the main guy and others playing situationally.

Tillman imo is unplayable in this series. Allowing Luka to hide on D changes the entire trajectory of the series. If KP can't go, it will be probably be Hauser/PP eating most of his minutes, with Tatum shifting to the 5. It will make them more susceptible to Gafford posting up, but it's a real question whether Luka/Kyrie have the patience to do that consistently anyway. They gotta hit their 50+ shot quota.
