I don't think any of the major 4 can come up with a formula to make people care about all star games. I follow the local teams very closely and I haven't watched one in over a decade.

The draft will be even more fun than the actual game. I love this.

This is because everyone except Lebron and GH is in the west, right?
No love for Kyrie?

I guess the NBA didn't want LBJ and Kyrie on the same team during ASG since they'd try to freeze each other out.

Warriors, Thunder, Cavs v. the field would be my formula

G Curry
G Westbrook
F Lebron
F Durant
Big Green

G IT4
G Klay
F George
F Melo
Big Adams

Love
Wade (or Iggy or Roberson as defensive sub)

Can the rest of the NBA beat them? You'd get people to watch

I've always liked the MLB all-star game. It's fun to see matchups that you virtually never get to see. And it's just plain fun.

The other ones...bleh.

And you know there will be a MAJOR push by shoe sponsors as well as agents to influence the teams. It could be a beautiful mess.

This right here. The League may have accidentally hit upon the perfect way to get everyone's beefs out in the air and extract some ratings mileage over it. Not even the NHL avoided drama with this method, and the NBA is considerably more, um, star-driven.

A guy on call on radio show said do league wide-voting, no conferences--top 20 make team, 10 oldest versus 10 youngest.

When I was a kid there was an awesome moment in the ASG when the East rolled out Havlicek, Silas, Cowens, White and Monroe. And then Jo Jo called a play.

Anything that takes decisions away from the fans is fine with me. I'd like to see the team selected by the coaches and players, with no one allowed to vote for anyone on his own team.

Fans still vote. They just don't get to vote on which team they will be on

I've mentioned this a few times, but it's time for the NBA to make the all star game USA vs World, at least for a couple years. They have the international talent to do this now, especially if they consider Kyrie to be Australian.

The NBA All-Star Game was just fine until about five years ago, when the players stopped even pretending to play defense. That’s the problem the league should be trying to address, not the East-West talent imbalance (which should fix itself over time).

Having captain-picked teams is a change for the worse; most fans can pick a rooting interest in an East-West contest, but your casual fan who tunes in Sunday evening and sees two random pickup teams playing each other is going to have trouble engaging.

.
I agree this format will not fix this problem. If players don't care about their conference, why will they care about "Team Steph, "Team Russ" etc.

This format is going to make my tiny interest in watching go to zero. I only watch to root for the Celtics/East. If you have Celtics on both teams I officially don't care at all.

The picking process itself sounds vaguely fun but the game promises to be deathly boring either way. I'd just have em pick teams, give their teams cool names, talk trash at each other for a little while, and then not bother actually playing. Or bring out couches, a giant TV, beer and snacks and let 'em play it on NBA 2K18.

In today's reality TV culture, I think this could be an event at all of the big 4 all-star games (with the appropriate video have if course). The trash talk would be epic and hilarious.
Sign me up, that would be awesome!

I would actually check that out and can't remember the last all star game I more than channel surfed through

I wonder if playing the best European pro team vs the All stars would be better. It would be blow out with lots of dunks, but they would have to play some defense.

Surprised the Freak is ahead of Lebron, but they'll obviously rig the votes to get Captain Lebron vs. Captain Durant. Jimmy Butler at only #10 for guards is crazy. He is having a great season. So is Kawhi at #6. Lonzo at #8 is LOL but not really surprising.
