Not sure if anyone had seen this yet, but I don't see any discussion yet... apologies if it is being discussed elsewhere.

NBA is obviously going to tribute the hell out of Kobe at the all-star game weekend, which, fine. Fourth quarter of the game will be commercial free, which I certainly won''t complain about.

But, they're making a pretty bonkers change to how the fourth quarter will be played:

On Sunday, Team Giannis and Team LeBron will compete to win each of the first three quarters, all of which will start with the score of 0-0 and will be 12 minutes long. At the beginning of the fourth quarter, the game clock will be turned off and a Final Target Score will be set.

The Final Target Score will be determined by taking the leading team’s total cumulative score through three quarters and adding 24 points – the 24 representing Bryant’s jersey number for the final 10 seasons of his NBA career. The teams will then play an untimed fourth quarter and the first team to reach the Final Target Score will win the NBA All-Star Game.
I haven't paid as much attention to the NBA as I used to and didn't realize they no longer did East vs. West, so I"m no longer confused about Team Giannis and Team LeBron. But... why is each quarter starting at 0-0? Why not just keep the score until the fourth quarter and then do the dumb target score thing? An untimed fourth quarter seems pretty wacky to me. And with only 24 points to score for the leading team, it's going to be over pretty quickly based on past all-star game scores.

I understand they're going to go over-the-top for Kobe... but I don't see what this has to do with anything aside from finding a way to shoehorn his jersey number into things.

I'm trying to find a way to express the depths of my not-caring about All-Star game results and format.

Basically it's a full week off to make some videos, read some novels, and write some code.

The Kobe stuff is whatever but setting a target end score for the 4th Quarter isn't that crazy - it's a modified form of the Elam Ending which has been seriously proposed as a way to minimize intentional fouls at the end of games and ensure that every game ends on a "buzzer beater." We even have a whole thread about it.

Why thank you. Had no idea this was a thing that's been brought up before!

Tatum being interviewed on ESPN now. The world-wide leader had his name as “Jason” for part of interview.

What do you have planned for software projects?

Why wouldn’t Steph, Klay and KD show up to compete in the three-point shootout? Instant ratings bonanza. What’s the downside?

The modified Elam ending is cool and makes a game that is essentially a group of extremely wealthy athletes showing off their uncontested offensive moves potentially more interesting. I will actually pay attention during the fourth quarter which is not something I have done over the past few years.

As Pablo Torre noted on the Lowe Post this week, the NBA is getting "weird". That is cool.

Three points for a dunk would be a fantastic way to get big men back into the game. Tacko could be the Steph Curry of it!

The NBA has a weirdly high delta between “wacky novel stuff we’re willing to try” and “simple rule/point of emphasis changes that would drastically improve the game.”

I’m still waiting for them to adopt the MTV Rock N Jock 25- and 50-point baskets.

They are going to award a winner of each quarter and give their charity some money. So it makes sense to start each quarter 0-0 to make it easier to follow.

Bam would challenge Tacko. I don't think I've seen more ferocious dunker this season in the NBA. Multiple point dunks would be great but as they pointed out, the first time someone got hurt doing it, it would end.

Playing the fourth quarter to 24 is idiotic. Even with some defense being played, that should take less than eight minutes. How about combining both numbers and playing to 32.

Bam wins the skills challenge. Good job by him, rarely shoots 3-pointers during games but has a decent touch.

Can we trade Tatum for Sabonis or Adebayo, clearly not as skillful as we thought

He's 4/33, so there's probably a reason he doesn't shoot them in games. I feel like this is probably like that time when Rondo couldn't make a 3 to save his life in games, and then when he made the horse game during all star weekend they decided to turn it into a 3 point contest he made like 8 in a row before finally losing to KD

Its 24 beyond the cumulative score of the leader after 3. So say it’s 110-100 after 3 then they play to 134.

They are going to reset each of the first 3 to 0 and have a different winner of each for charity. But I figure they will be tracking the cumulative leader as it goes along.

Most NBA players nowadays are not bad distance shooters alone and unguarded, even big men shoot a lot in practice. Problem is those 33 shots by Bam represent 1 attempt every 2 games. Unless you are an established sharpshooter like an Eddie House who comes off hot even after a 2-game absence, it won't go well without regular game reps. Not that Bam would be "effective" from long range, just that he'd probably shoot over 20% with more regular attempts.

Of course Dwight Howard pulls out the superman in honor of the most overrated "dunk" in nba history

Howard was awful and that 50 should’ve been a 40.
Judges basically admitted they only gave him high scores because it was a tribute to Kobe. And probably not many people care, but in this age where the NBA (along with other sports) are trying to get in with the sports betting industry, it's a really bad look when you have contests that are in some ways rigged or you don't follow your own rules and you're letting people bet on them and also asking the betting industry to give you a cut
