I don't have a keen enough eye to judge speed on the margins, but Alex Speier tweeted that Sizemore already looks appreciably slower than he did in Spring Training. I do, however, have a keen enough eye to see him balk at the ball off the bat and then watch him run in the wrong direction.

My impression is that Sizemore has one good gallop in him per game, and that once he's used it up, he'll be limping around the field and the basepaths for the remainder of the day. His performance tends to confirm radsoxfan's supposition that his microfracture-repaired knee isn't looking like a long-term investment.

Wilson back down after the one game, per Roto

Not a surprise there -- Alex Wilson is the ultimate fungible bullpen arm: right-handed, mediocre stuff, apparently durable, and won't be missed if he's stuck back in the minors for the next ten days.

Minor correction.... it's his microfracture-repaired knees, plural. Not to mention repaired should probably be in quotes, since it often doesn't fix things very well.

I'm still holding out hope Sizemore can be useful this year, but I always thought the idea he might be a 6 game-a-week CF was wildly optimistic.  Combining his injury history and his lack of any success in the majors for 5 years, it just didn't seem realistic.

Hopefully Grady can get used to LF, avoid playing more than 2 days in a row and day games after night games.  Maybe if he settles into a 3-4 game a week platoon with Gomes, he can recapture at least some of his prior glory on a small scale.  If Nava really turns into a pumpkin, Grady should get a chance to do that.

I'd look at it like the Knicks deal with Amare Stoudamire, who is at least still marginally useful as a bench player (though way overpaid). Manage his minutes, avoid back-to-backs, hope for the best. Let's just hope Grady doesn't go the way of Brandon Roy (Sorry for the NBA references, I know that's out of style in these parts).

FWIW, not all arthritic knees and microfracture surgeries are the same, so we can't be sure his situation is at all like those NBA guys. It's probably not. There is a very wide range of severity. Just using them as examples of possible outcomes.

That sucks. I hope at least he didn't get a split contract, so he not losing out on money and precious service time at his age.

I have no idea what is going on with the quoted part of the post. It seems to want to double up on the Twiiter stuff for some reason. I delete one of the blocks and it comes back again after I submit.

What "sucks"? Farrell is only saying that, at this time, thy aren't trading or releasing someone to get Nava back up. At this time. Could change tomorrow. Nothing to see here.

It sounds a little better when you read some of the stuff he said before it (or, at least, not quite as dire)

With Daniel Nava off to a .333/.400/.524 start in six games with Triple-A Pawtucket since being optioned April 23, Farrell offered an assessment on the 31-year-old's time in the minors.

"He's back to an approach that we saw here last year," Farrell said. "The disappointment in going down has been short-lived or it hasn't filtered into his work in-between the lines and he's swinging the bat well."

Nava has one home run and three RBIs while playing at least one game in each outfield spot.

With Shane Victorino and Jackie Bradley Jr. holding down right and center field respectively and Jonny Gomes and Grady Sizemore splitting duties in left, Farrell said any potential return for Nava at this point would be predicated on an injury to one of Boston's regulars.

Grand slam for Nava tonight to lead the Pawsox.  I think he's found his comfort zone.  Remember when Manny was looking to be traded and included the Pawsox as one of the teams?

This season feels like a frustrating run of Oregon Trail. I keep waiting for us to lose the bullpen fording a river and for Bogaerts to die of cholera.

In the interest of keeping the dopes and mods from murdering small children, I started a new thread for this.  Maybe it's not big enough news to warrant it, but I started it.
