Not here
If these injuries were all at different times, they wouldn't make a damn bit of difference, but it's first base, third base, right field, second base, and closer and all at the same damn time and it's costing us games.

I agree, but it's pretty ridiculous that these players continue to slide into bases head first. Their hands and wrists are the most important tools that they have. They all know this. Ask any hitter and they will tell you that. So why slide head first? It makes no sense.

In this case as well, if he slid feet first he would've been safe because the throw got away. Go ahead and risk the extra base but don't be stupid about it. This happened to Pedrioa last year, Josh Hamilton  and Puig this year, Manny... the list goes on and on.

I hope he is truly ok and avoids a decline in performance much more than avoiding DL time. A limited Mike Napoli will really hurt this team. Without his power he doesn't have the impact that a player like Pedroia can have.

EDIT: Formatting

But how many head first slides are there into 2nd base(or any base) a season?  Lets say it happens 10,000 times, and that is barely over two times a game per team, not including the playoffs, which would seem low.  And how many injuries a year? 10? 20?  Even if you want to argue 50, which averages over an injury and a half to each team, its 0.5% chance.  Running into the wall to catch a fly ball in far more dangerous.  Hell being a catcher is far more dangerous than sliding head first into a bag.  Does that mean we should do away with catchers?

I get the MLB trying to minimize MAJOR injuries, but we all know playing a sport, whether it as a kid in your back yard all the way to the pro level minor injuries are going to happen.

And lets not compare ANYONE to Manny when it comes to injuries.  He would take 20 games off if he got a paper cut

Doesn't JF realize those are obsolete?

I was assuming that was from the White Sox dugout.

Though it could also be from the press box, or a broadcast booth.

The lineup card is Don Orsillo's.

We don't let you in those since you lost the game with the Yankees over the weekend.

RedOctober broke a rule the day before and won, and then he (seemingly) vanished. Truth was, the server ate his thread. I figured maybe a "F the rules" streak was in order. Red's thread got restored, and mine locked - so it's kinda hard to see who's at fault here.

Regarding Napoli, his finger is out of the splint, and taped to his pinky finger, but still sore. He's going to try to get a glove over it and see about gripping a bat.

And back in the lineup today.

Assuming there are no lingering effects *touch wood* that could have been a lot worse.

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. — Mike Napoli isn’t using it as an excuse, but he also has come to grips with what has become an uncomfortable reality.
More than a month since dislocating his left ring finger, Mike Napoli is still dealing being forced to deal with what was, at the time, a gruesome incident.
“It still hurts,” he said prior to the Red Sox‘ 1-0 loss to the Rays Friday night, in which he went 0-for-4 while stranding five runners.
While Napoli said he has had no further X-rays after getting the initial diagnosis immediately following having to leave the Red Sox‘ April 15 game in Chicago, the lingering effects continue to be somewhat alarming.
The finger is still noticeably swollen, needing to be re-taped following each at-bat.
“I’m trying to figure it out,” said Napoli of having to adjust to the injury. “It’s tough. It hurts. But it’s not an excuse or anything. It’s something I can deal with, I guess.
“It’s not like I really think about it when I’m hitting. Sometimes I feel it when I take a swing, but that’s after the facet. It’s up and down. Sometimes it feels all right and sometimes it hurts.”
Entering Friday night’s game, Napoli had managed a .781 OPS in the 27 games since the injury. He did, however, carry a higher on-base percentage (.398) than slugging percentage (.383) during the stretch, totaling just two home runs.
Napoli explained that the swelling has remained thanks in part to the inability to keep the finger inactive.
“Done it a couple of times. Things you’re not even thinking about,” he explained. “Like the other day I said ‘Good job’ to Badenhop, putting my glove out not even thinking about it and he bangs my finger. Everything I do, little things. I can be in the shower washing my hair and it might hurt.
“Situations come and it’s just about getting the job done when you have the opportunity. I feel like I can go up there and give a tough at-bat every time. You have to make adjustments.”

If Napoli is still feeling pain, why don't they just DL him?

Well it might not be getting any worse by playing him and the offense would be terrible without him in there.

Because that may easily be above the production of whomever might replace him. The trade-off is how they do in games without him versus extra games picked up with a healthier version of him in the future.

Now, if they had known ahead of time that they would have lost the last 8 even with him, though...

The same guy Ortiz hit 2 homers off in the playoffs? This lineup is weak enough.

His .238 BA and .755 OPS are really holding this lineup together.

(not being snide, but he isn't really contributing much the past month for one reason or another.)

Lavarnway coming up? Not really much by way of RH bats in Pawtucket right now.
They're playing right now, Lavarnway's not in the lineup, it's a day game in Atlanta tomorrow, so it does seem to fit.

When he is eligible to come off of the DL? I haven't seen this anywhere. He hasn't played in a couple of days so I am assuming 15 days from Friday?
Hard to believe this wasn't mentioned in any of the articles I saw.

Nevermind. The Globe had it. Retroactive to yesterday.
