Ronaldo coming on???!!!??

What are you doing, Hag? LFC have grown into the game but this is the best MU have played as a team in a long time, right? Why bring on the Selfish One?

That’s a baffling substation. Ten Hag will get roasted if they concede another.

I do not like five subs. The endurance factor matters less when you can sub off half the outfield players.

Jeez, if you need someone to knock it 30 feet over the bar, you don't need CR7 for that

I wouldn't mind if they change back, but it made sense for COVID and it makes sense for this absurd world cup and the resultant fixture pileup.

Unless you want to kill all national cups, there aren't enough crap competitions to cut. Most countries don't have a silly junior cup like England does.

That cup of course should be killed dead, or at least restricted to teams not in Europe or something.

On merit it's United's result easily - full credit to them, they deserved 4-5 goals with this defensive showing. Van Dijk's worst match in the shirt, including the 7-2 at Villa.

All the whining about the Rashford goal being offside - I've heard enough! He was clearly on

Yeah Liverpool’s back line was so bad Maguire will be linked to them.

Similar to my tinfoil hat theory that Klopp kept Milner out there all night as a plea for another midfielder - I wonder if ETH left the slab out there for the Brentford drubbing to show he didn't have a future at United.

And it gives an even bigger advantage to clubs with overly stuffed rosters.
and yet Pep has to unload his star-studded bench this season

Everton-Leeds on USA at 10am next Sat while the rest of the bigger teams go on Peacock - at least Leeds are 2nd in the league, not like how they forced Bradley's Swansea relegation battle

All this discussion of VAR.. there’s this idea that it’s accurate.. but are there really enough frames per second where players are actually located when the ball leaves a players foot? How do they determine the exact millisecond a ball leaves the foot? Is a computer able to read how fast the ball is moving.. how fast the players are moving and determine it that way? Because that’d be interesting.

edit: I see the article talks about that.. interesting

I don’t see where that is discussed but I believe the answer is no, it’s an arbitrary mess

I can’t kvetch about this one. It’s so close and VAR wasn’t meant to overturn a call like this.

But LiVARpool and all that…

Some telling stuff In ten hags interview after the match. Said that Bruno and Rafa Varane are his on field leaders. Also hinted at 433 now that Casemiro is here. Described him as “the cement between the building blocks”.

The espn un article that’s in one of the tweets talks about how current positioning of players and the ball is limited because they use the tv cameras at 50 or however many frames per second. In the World Cup they’ll use cameras that track every player at the same (edit) frame rate but have a sensor in the ball that locates it 500x per secon and also gives exact timing for when it was kicked. All of this is done in seconds and would be automatic... I think it then says that the whole thing is then checked by humans which would bring back in the arbitrary and allow for the potential corruption that Fifa likes to maintain… that last part wasn’t in the article but is my opinion.

I welcome the human element. We've taken sports too far in a false quest for perfection...I blame the NFL (but I also despise the NFL).

The best rule for all instant replay scenarios is to put a time limit on the review. You should basically get 15 seconds to see if the ref really fucked up and if not, go with the call.

For the Devils supporters, is Martial part of the best XI? What I mean by that is would United be better off playing a 4-4-2 or ETH's preferred 4-2-3-1 in order to get DvdB on the field, or even have one of FredTominay alongside Casemiro? Not saying Casemiro isn't good enough--far from it, I have more respect for him than most EPL fans from watching him boss La Liga and UCL for the past decade. I know ETH loves his 4-2-3-1 for example:

DDG
Malacia-Varane-Arry (lol jk, Lisandro)-Dalot
Casemiro-Donny/Fred/Tominay
Eriksen-Bruno-Rash/Sancho
Martial/Rash

I could also see the old Brazil 4-2-2-2 coming into play:

DDG
Malacia-Varane-Lisandro-Dalot
Casemiro-Donny
Bruno-Eriksen
Rash-Jadon

I don’t know if we’ll have a settled best eleven. A lot of team selection will depend on opposition and fitness. Having said that, if everyone is fit (and that’s a big if), I think regardless of opponent you will see the following in order of importance:

Varane, Martinez, Casemiro, Sancho, Bruno.

After that, it depends. In his post match interview with carragher and Neville he strongly hinted at 433-4231 with Casemiro playing alongside Eriksen and Bruno.

I do think if Rashford is confident and fit, he plays either on the left or 9.

We’re in Europa league there will be a lot of games coming up so rotation and rest will be key. But if Ronaldo goes and Antony or Gapko come in, ETH should have 5 winger/forwards for the front three positions with Rashford Sancho Martial Antony and Elanga.

I don’t think VDB starts over Bruno or Eriksen unless it’s to give one of them a rest.

Casemiro provides plenty of teeth, that should be enough if Eriksen can put in a shift.

I’ve wondered that as well and I’m not sure.

If we’re in a game that needs a little more strength in the midfield, Fred could come in for Eriksen.

I mean if it’s good enough for the Brazil national team it should be good enough for us.

I think that's mostly right. Casemiro and Bruno are your best 2 MF. If you expect to dominate the ball then add Eriksen. If you think you need more D, then pick Fred. Not sure where McT and Donny fit in exactly. I think you all also touched on the importance of the rest of the team. If you have your attacking FBs (Dalot and Malacia presumably) available and fit, then perhaps they provide more O and you pick more defensive MF. If AWB or other more defensive FBs are selected, have more offense and creativity in the MF. Sancho is the best forward, followed by Rash, then Martial. They should be selected accordingly. Sound about right?
