I have one of these new Android phones. I tried Itunes  a few years agoand thought it was terrible  ~ I couldn't maintain my own music on my own device without redoing it.  I am looking for something that is simple and flexible so I can put my own music on it and buy music through it too.

I know nothing about phones or computers and their intricate foibles.

Any thoughts or recommendations ?  (I know there is a megathread but I wanted a mini thread).

I use Google Play music on my phone. You can store up to 20,000 songs for free in the cloud. I download songs to my phone so I can play them from there when I'm in the car and don't want to use my data plan. When you are on wi-fi with it you can play any of the songs from the cloud. I have it installed on my phone and laptop. You can easily set it up to download songs from either iTunes or the music folder on your computer.

I have music I recorded from my CDs on an iPod Touch that I later transferred to my Android smartphone. I think I had to convert their format, though, but it was some time ago and I cannot recall for certain.

Can I copy my own music from cds albums etc. ?  Does Google Play have its own music to listen to ? Is there a charge for it ?

You can pay $10 a month and get access to their library of music for unlimited streaming and downloading to your phone/tablet/whatever (like Spotify), or you can have a free account which lets you upload up to 20,000 songs from your own music library to the cloud, which you can then play through their app.  You basically tell it what folders on your hard drive have music files and it will upload those songs to the cloud.  It will also automatically upload songs that you later add to your hard drive, as long as they are in the same folder.

I got in when when it first came out at $8 a month and use it as much or more than any other app I have.  It's pretty great.

Edit: Just to clarify, you can add 20,000 songs from your own library either way.  That's just the only thing you can do with a free account.  With a paid account, you can upload your own music in addition to having access to Google's library of music, which is pretty robust.  You can get a free 30 day trial to see if you like it or not.

Apple and Google suck.

I use Shuttle now on my handheld.

Much easier to install my own music on it without losing it. Google and Apple keep wanting me to buy things I already own.
