Left his feet and the head is the principal point of contact. 2-3 games, right?

Edit: The contact was up and into the under-chin/neck area, and as far as I can tell, qualifies under "a hit resulting in contact with an opponent's head where the head was the main point of contact and such contact to the head was avoidable."

Good on 19 Year Old Sam Bennett for his response. I think that gets 1-2 games, I can’t tell on that angle how flush the head contact is... if it’s direct it’s more but it looked more glancing. Also Cole doesn’t charge and keeps his elbow down.

That's definitely going to be a wheels of justice suspension. It could be 1 or up to 5. I didn't think Cole charged either, but that's what he was called for. I think 2 of the bigger factors will be that Jankowski was in control of the puck, so he was eligible to be hit and it doesn't appear he was injured. Cole has some discipline history so he gets 2.

Outside of the discipline aspect, I always look at if it was the right hockey play. I don't know Cole's game well enough to understand his skill level, but it looked like there was an opportunity to play the puck and keep it in the zone. He went for the hit to separate the puck from the carrier without regard for the puck. As a D he potentially put himself out of position by be caught in the O Zone with the puck heading up ice. I don't think you'll ever see Chara do something like that.

It looks like he saw it coming and avoided head contact, and wasn’t injured. I’m guessing 0 games because the NHL is stupid and cares about the outcome more than the intent.

The hit, fight and ensuing power play totally changed the vibe of the game...from a 4-1 Colorado lead after 2 to a 6-5 Calgary win. Bennet should have been one of the three stars just for his response...

From the alternate angle. Its a "head" shot in that it was to the underside of the chin. Furthermore, his left skate is definitely up, and his shoulders rise 6-8 inches in the half second prior to the hit.

Man, I love laughing at the Senators' expense as much as the next guy.... but that Uber driver should probably not be an Uber driver anymore.

Yeah the Uber driver is the biggest a hole in all of this. But of course it just had to be the Senators that get caught up in this.

Blackhawks fire Q.

No in season coaching changes all of last year, 2 in a month to begin this season. Seems like this was bubbling up for a while, Q and Bowman were butting heads quite a bit.

I thought the hit itself was non-suspendable. It's interference by a mile, likely a double minor, but he didn't absolutely bury him, shoulder to shoulder, wasn't blindside, etc.

But once he started teeing off with punches when he was flat on his back...not good. Have a good vacation, Looch.

I haven't seen the full video, but Lucic was apparently retaliating for an earlier hit by Joseph on Russell. (part of the video in the link below) There is also a video of Lucic heading to the box and Stamkos looking like he was yelling 'fucking pussy' at Lucic from safely on the other side of the ice. I saw it earlier but couldn't find that one.
https://nhl.nbcsports.com/2018/11/07/milan-lucic-earns-phone-hearing-for-going-after-lightnings-joseph/

I love the picking on a rookie comments. Guy is in the NHL and hit someone in the numbers which made him go face first into the dasher. He's got to expect to pay a price for that. I think Lucic did what was probably necessary to try to get some life into the Oilers. If he took the gloves off and pounded him on the ice it wold have been too much. I'd say a fine is enough, but it's the modern NHL so who knows.

Tom Wilson is back. Suspension reduced to 14 games.

An article with some explanation. Basically citing "Wheel of Justice"

As for the NHL's math, Das sided with the NHLPA, which contended that the "multiplier" formula to reach 20 games was "pulled out of thin air."

Wrote Das: "There is no evidence that any specific 'multiplier,' as such, was used to determine the discipline in those (or other) prior instances of repeated rule violations, and the after-the-fact multipliers calculated by Parros for purposes of this case varied widely from negative numbers to 10x in Torres' case.

Tanner Pearson headed to Pittsburgh.

Edit: Pearson has a $3.75 Mm cap hit for 2 more full seasons. He has 1 assist in 17 games this year.

Deal is Hagelin for Pearson straight up.

Hagelin is a UFA. Kinda a weird deal, but I would guess the Kings endgame is flipping Hagelin for futures at the deadline.

Pittsburgh has been pretty crappy and Hagelin was a well-liked guy in the locker room. Just trying to shake things up before perhaps taking more dramatic action if this doesn't get the point across.

Feels like a trade just for the sake of making a trade. I guess Edmonton picks up speed, which they need, but I don’t think this makes them any better. They are still a 2-man show. I’m not really sure what NYR’s angle is. They didn’t clear any salary since they retained $900K and Strome is kinda shitty too. The Rangers seem to have been duped by Spooner’s 16 points in 20 games after the Nash deal when he was getting almost 17 minutes a night, which he turned into a 2 year, $4 million AAV contract.

Blues lose to the Kings, fire Yeo. Craig Berube takes over. 3rd coaching change this month. Edmonton may be next.

Weird night in Ottawa, as play had to be stopped while CPR got administered to a fan, and Florida's Vincent Trochek had to be stretched off the ice with a leg injury. There's a YouTube video of the broadcast, and you can hear Trochek screaming in pain. I wish I hadn't watched, and I am not going to link it.

Then the game had to be delayed because there were no paramedics left.

The Trochek injury looked very bad. Hate to see that happen, but especially to a guy who is just coming into his own as a very good player. Florida was already having a rough season, can’t see them turning things around without Trochek

Pittsburgh blew a 4-1 lead last night to the Sabres. The Sabres have won 6 straight, while the Pens are in a funk and are bringing up the rear in the East. Pittsburgh has had these spells in the past where they look out of it and then by March they are comfortably in, but they are digging themselves a bit deeper of a hole this year (and hopefully continue to do so on Friday!).

For all the talk of the Atlantic being the weaker division coming into the year with the dregs of hockey residing in it, the Atlantic currently holds down 5 playoff spots at the moment while the Metro is a mess of mediocrity.

And here’s the Edmonton coaching change. McLellan out, Ken Hitchcock in.

Edit: Firing McLellan was probably the right move, but dusting off Hitch is a bit more of a head scratcher.

Let's support our once-in-a-decade offensive talent by hiring a defensive head coach! Bold prediction: Hitchcock and Chia won't be around by the end of next season.

Edit: note, I said this before I knew Hitchcock's deal was a "rest of the year and see" thing.

He's probably their best bet at not being horrible, given the rest of their roster. But yeah, it's a travesty that one of the best offensive players ever is playing for Hitchcock.

Hitch was kind of their only choice. He’s local and agreed to coach through the end of this season and then reevaluate. They weren’t going to get anyone noteworthy without a long term commitment, which wasn’t happening given Chiarelli’s precarious job security.

And Coach Q is happily collecting paychecks the rest of the season so he can sit back and wait to see how things play out.

And take shots with Bears fans.

He's going to be in high demand this offseason if he makes it that far. He could likely demand a Babcock contract.

Pet peeve - the embellishment should be a standalone two minutes and not a matching minor. To me embellishment means there was no real initial offense.

Mikko Rantanen was fined for embellishment for the matching embellish he got against Bergeron last week. http://www.espn.com/nhl/story/_/id/25341314/avs-forward-mikko-rantanen-fined-nhl-embellishment

Edit: as a follow up, is there any way to see who gets fines for embellishment? I really want to see if the people who get fined for it are disproportionately playing the Bruins, because it sure seems like it.
The first time it's called on a player, it's only a warning. This season so far, Rantanen is the only one fined.

That lack of information is the real gap for me. Because they don't release that, I don't know how many actually happen. I think there were only ~5 actual fines last year. I could see a legit pattern trying to "use your one" against the B's though.

James Neal looks like he'll be a healthy scratch for Calgary. Currently 31 years old and in the first year of a 5 x $5.75m deal.

As someone who never watches hockey anymore, how often do guys score 5 goals in 1 game nowadays? Patrick Laine has 5 goals today and 11 goals in his last 4.
