Wow - people are upset by some of the comments? I wonder how they would have reacted when we had a thread after the Great White Fire in Rhode Island, entitled, "Thinning Out the Mullet Heads"?
IIRC I think it was actually "Thinning of the Mullet Herd". And yes, it was one of the all-time great SoSH thread titles.

Mort will be forever branded to me as the guy who stood by what was wrong info because the "powers that be" wanted the misinformation out there. He sold out, plain and simple in exchange for access. It stopped being about the integrity of his craft and more about maintaining the info pipeline he needs to be publicly perceived as an NFL Insider. He made a deal with the devil.

He is human who is rightfully scared shitless right now and I wish him a speedy recovery and nice retirement.
I don't get why he wasn't really pissed about this. Maybe he was privately, I don't know. But access means fuck all when the info you get from it is bogus. An actual journalist would make that distinction. At any rate, I hear 11 of 12 throat cancers are significantly curable.

Not snarky, but does throat cancer really sneak up on you like that? Surprised it's stage 4 prior to treatments, though I suppose it's possible he has been getting them to no avail.
That's a great question and one I can't answer. I'm clueless when it comes to throat cancer. For instance, I didn't even know you could get it from lying.
Yes, it can, particularly head and neck cancer, where it's tough to see the cancer growing and then it can spread before the person is even aware. Stages don't really translate across cancers: Stage IV pancreatic cancer is not the same as Stage IV throat cancer.

Given what he said - one of the fastest growing cancers in men and 16 million new cases - I would guess that he has HPV positive cancer, which is what Jamie Dimon (and others) have. Treatment is really gnarly - chemo and radiation of the affected areas. But if I am correct, it has a higher survival rate than most.

BTW, boys should get the HPV vaccine. Really.

If it's Head & Neck cancer, Stage IV doesn't mean not curable. If it is HPV (or p16) positive, he should get a good response to chemotherapy and radiation. Will be out of action for a while, will also likely need feeding tube.

I've always loved that SoSH has an edge and I will continue to love it, but I'm not feeling it here. Just not mad enough about erroneous reporting of deflated footballs to wish the guy anything but well and I prefer to withhold from taking easy jabs.

Good luck to him, this sucks no matter who it happens to.

Good thing he sold out for access - that's gonna come in handy for a long time

He was a big meanie to your most favorite team in the whole wide world, wasn't he?
Yes, but thats not why. I just don't give a shit about him and he can fuck off.

He talks sports. Good for him. I know better people who've gotten cancer. If he dies tomorrow my life doesn't change at all. If you died, my sosh ecosystem would get teary eyed for 48 hours, so I'd prefer you didn't keel over.

Mort? Don't care, fuck him.

I wish the guy well too, but I don't think the dark humor and snarky comments are just about deflated balls. They are about a guy who didn't have the backbone or the integrity to do the right thing even when it was staring him in the face for months.

From MMQB:

“When I’m locked down onto a table with a mask for daily radiation, I have the techs at MD Anderson [Cancer Center in Houston] pipe in Christian music. It brings me a sense of peace. On that note, there is something special about experiencing the humility that comes with being a cancer patient. You realize pretty quickly that it’s non-discriminatory. Doesn’t seem to matter if you’re middle-aged, old, young, poor, rich, black, white, Hispanic, Islamic, Asian. It is indiscriminate. There’s a way-too-large community of cancer patients, inspired by survivors but equally inspired by those who fought the good fight but eventually succumbed.
There is one myth, in my opinion, I would share. The mantra of ‘kick cancer’s ass’ may be well-intended but it’s misplaced. Based on what I have experienced and having seen and heard others, you don’t kick cancer’s butt. It kicks your rear end. You just take the punches, get back up and let it hit you again and again … You pray you’re standing in the end. But it’s day-to-day. One day at a time.”

—ESPN reporter Chris Mortensen, in an email to Tom Hoffarth of insidesocal.com, for his “Farther off the Wall” blog. Mortensen is being treated in Houston for throat cancer.

This is uncalled for and way over the line. You don't have to like him. You don't have to care. Doesn't matter who you consider "better" people. Just ignore him. Fuck him? Seriously? Go say this to his face. Talking shit on the internet hiding behind a screen name or over the phone when you don't have the balls to do it face to face is pussy. If unfortunately he succumbs to this disease, you are willing to go to the funeral and say these words to his familys' face as well right?

Not even close to angry. Just think it's cowardly to say something on the internet from the safety of a screen name. Say it to their face FIRST. Then you can say it as much as you want. If it is something you won't say to their face, then STFU. It's a simple concept. I've lost a lot of family members to cancer. Including my father. There is just no need to say shit like that. None. Just ignore someone if you don't like them.

If he was quick, he would tell you that he was all set after fucking your mom. But the insane chemo he's getting may have his mind clouded so you'll probably get to tell him to fuck himself without much a comeback.

Cancer is irrelevant. He can go fuck himself. I am supposed to change my feelings towards him because of cancer? It's ok what he did because he has cancer? No

SoSH is not high school, and the schoolyard code of "say it to my/his face first" does not apply to the Internet. You might think that KFP's opinion is harsh, but Mort is not immune from criticism simply because he got cancer. Nor does he somehow become a sainted figure. He is what he is - a flawed reporter who has cancer.

To those who know him, his cancer is tragic. To those who don't, it's irrelevant.

I'm genuinely sorry to hear about your family members, as it has clearly had a profound effect on you. IMO, that's not an excuse to personalize KFP's post and lash out at him, but he's a big boy and can take care of himself. I offer the advice simply because it will be hard to last around this place if you take every rough-edged comment personally.

Maybe this corner of the Internet isn't the place for you. Or any corner for that matter.

I'm not trying to stop you from doing anything. Go for it. Until you get your moment to look him in the eye and really put him in his place, tweet a fuck you and die at him. Assuming the cancer hasn't seriously impaired his ability to see, that tweet will probably ruin his day.

Never said anywhere I wanted him to die. Just that he can fuck off. The only sports death that would give me any pleasure is Goodell. He can fuck off AND die

If Goodell were to get Stage 4 cancer, this place would be so awesome I would have a hard time getting any work done at all.
