Welcome back Mitchy TwoBags. Something to follow other than the quixotic wild card chase: if Moreland can pick up where he left off, and JBJ (or Beni) can catch a hot streak, the Sox have an outside shot to become the first team ever (I think?) with eight 20+ HR hitters.

Bogaerts 21
Devers 20
JDM 20
Chavis 16
Vazquez 15
Betts 15
Moreland 13
JBJ 11
Benintendi 8

This year's Twins look like they have a better shot:

Kepler 25
Rosario 21
Cruz 20
Garver 19
Cron 18
Schoop 15
Polanco 14
Sano 14
Marwin 11
Castro 10
Buxton 9

The Yankees maybe have a shot too.

Sanchez 24
Voit 19
Gleyber 19
LeMahieu 15
Gardner 15
Frazier 11
Judge 11 (153 ABs)
Urshela 10
Hicks 10 (185 ABs)
Encarnacion 8 (103 ABs)

10D is a REAL big outside shot.

I don't love optioning Marco either, but I'm suspecting that it is the left-handedness and the fact that he has options. I love Brock Holt but after this year it will be nice to know the Sox have someone to fill his spot on the roster with a lot of ability, upside and much lower cost.

So they have 1 second baseman now with Chavis not 100%? Or is he back?

Not sure I understand the logic. Holt and Moreland against RHP. OK.

Chavis and Travis against LHP? Holt the SS and 3B backup?

They've been giving Vazquez time at both corners lately just trying to get/keep his bat in the lineup. I imagine they envision him as a back-up.

The issue isn't Marco versus Travis. It's their illogical need to carry 8 relievers. I'd like to believe it's because of the issues they've had with the pitching, but they carried 13 pitchers and went with a short bench for long stretches last year too when the pitching was much better.

Marco is way more talented even vs lefties than Travis. Not to mention baserunning and fielding. I see him as the regular 2nd baseman with Holt as super sub. A couple of mistake hrs doesn’t show Travis to be a major leaguer.

This just isn't true at all. Did you even bother looking at their minor league splits? Did Sam Travis run over your dog?
Travis Vs LHP
2014: .416/.430/.649 in 79 PA
2015: .325/.416/.553 in 137 PA
2016: .300/.378/.400 in 45 PA
2017: .314/.400/.505 in 120 PA
2018: .255/.341/.391 in 126 PA
2019: .327/.347/.561 in 101 PA

Marco vs LHP
2014: .227/.267/.266 in 138 PA
2015: .317/.336/.387 in 146 PA
2016 .347/.372/.400 in 79 PA
2017: .313/.353/.313 in 17 PA
2018: N/A
2019: .221/.250/.250 in 72 PA

Marco Hernandez has 0 power and 0 patience vs LHP. Unless you think he's actually capable of hitting .300+ off lefties, he 's completely useless.

Sam Travis is light years better.

Major league level for their career
Sam Travis: 94 PA, .291/.351/.442
Marco: 50 PA, .340/.380/.362

Again, unless you think Marco can hit over .300 vs L... he offers nothing.

edit: nothing vs lefties. Whether he adds more overall value to the team is debatable.
