Betts dealt with knee pain after All-Star break. Team thought could be managed. Instead, surgery. Expected to be ready for spring training.

Not good news. Was continuing to play on a balky knee worth it at this stage of his career?

Since the damage was limited enough to be addressed with arthroscopic surgery, I don't think it was that great a risk. The decision to play on the knee was probably one of pain tolerance rather than at the risk of further damage. It certainly didn't seem to hold him back since he finished the season as an MVP finalist and the fact that he was even hurt to the point of needing surgery wasn't even known until today.

Doesn't seem that way as surgery was not originally considered necessary.

Or it was, but wasn't deemed of immediate need. Most likely, the doctors assessed his injury when it happened, determined he could play with it as long as he could tolerate the pain/discomfort, and left the decision up to the player. Happens every single year.

I'm sure one of our resident docs can chime in, but a "loose body removal" and chondroplasty are more of a maintenance thing than a necessary-to-function thing. Putting those off for a few weeks/months isn't going to create or cause more damage to the joint. At least not without significant increase in pain that would take the player off the field and put him on the operating table anyway.

Not for nothing but Mookie was apparently seen at a Rec center in Newton this September playing basketball with the crew I normally shoot hoops with.

Heard about it a few weeks after it happened but it seemed odd to me to risk hurting yourself in the middle of a pennant race. Now, even stranger considering he was apparently already hurt.
