A bunch of mock draft results for the Pats (round 1 only):

https://www.profootballnetwork.com/2022-nfl-mock-draft-evan-neal-aidan-hutchinson-kayvon-thibodeaux/2/

21) New England Patriots: Drake London, WR, USC
A bully at the catch point and an elite runner with the football in his hands, Drake London is the top yards-after-the-catch threat in this draft. Despite his injury sustained midway through the season, London comfortably led the Pac-12 in receiving yards. The New England Patriots grab a true No. 1 receiver for Mac Jones to throw to for the next decade.

https://www.cbssports.com/nfl/draft/news/2022-nfl-mock-draft-bengals-invest-in-protection-for-joe-burrow-falcons-trade-calvin-ridley-and-go-wr/

21. George Karlaftis, Edge, Purdue
Karlaftis is NFL strong with a nice arsenal of pass-rush moves. The Patriots got great returns on the Matthew Judon signing but need more juice around the corner.

https://www.si.com/nfl/2022/02/17/nfl-mock-draft-evan-neal-kenny-pickett

21. New England Patriots: Drake London, WR, USC
Drafting early-round wide receivers has been more miss than hit for Bill Belichick, but London is a top-15 talent who should elevate to the WR1 role early in his career for the Patriots. A former USC basketball player, the 6' 5" wideout uses his large frame and wide catch radius to dominate at the catch point.

https://www.nfl.com/news/three-round-2022-nfl-mock-draft-1-0-five-trades-five-qbs-selected-in-round-1

28. George Pickens, WR, Georgia (after trading down with GB)
Pickens has an elite skill set as an outside playmaker and proved his work ethic coming back from a torn ACL in the spring to be a factor in the late stages of the Bulldogs' title run. He's worth the investment at this point of the first round.

https://walterfootball.com/draft2022_1.php

21. Devin Lloyd, LB, Utah
Dont'a Hightower and Kyle Van Noy will both be 32 during the 2022 season. Bill Belichick may want a young linebacker. Devin Lloyd can be used outside or inside in a 3-4 (or at linebacker in the 4-3), as he's an athletic defender who has impressed as both a pass rusher and a coverage linebacker this year.

https://draftwire.usatoday.com/lists/2022-nfl-mock-draft-3-rounds-super-bowl-updated-malik-willis-kenny-pickett-matt-corral-sam-howell/

21. Jordan Davis, DT, Georgia
If anyone knows the value of a dominant nose tackle, it’s Bill Belichick, who watched Vince Wilfork set the tone for his best units throughout the Patriots’ dynasty. Davis has the size, athleticism and power to make a similar impact for the Pats in this generation.

https://247sports.com/ContentGallery/2022-NFL-mock-draft-167276792/#167276792_27

21. Jermaine Johnson, DE, Florida State
The 6-foot-5 defender started his college career at a community college in Kansas. A stint at Georgia followed, before the transfer portal brought him to Florida State where a 2021 breakout season saw him record 11.5 sacks and 70 total tackles. ESPN's Scouts Inc. considers Johnson the third-best defensive end in the draft pool.

So the mocks have NE taking either a WR or a defensive player (D-line in particular) with their first round pick.

Throwing out some scenarios based on PFF rankings (yes, I know), top Pats' needs, and perceived fits:

R1 (25): Chris Olave or Jameson Williams (WR) | Andrew Booth Jr or Kaiir Elam (CB) | Leo Chenal (LB - trade down) | Jordan Davis (DT)
R2 (53): George Pickens or Jalen Tolbert (WR) | Kyler Gordon (CB) | Christian Harris or Chad Muma (LB) | Travis Jones (DT)
R3 (85): John Metchie or Christian Watson (WR) | Martin Emerson (CB) | Quay Walker or Darrian Beavers (LB) | Phidarian Mathis or Neil Ferrell Jr (DT)
R4 (123): Kyle Phillips (WR) | Derion Kendrick or Tariq Woolen (CB) | Damone Clark (LB) | Noah Elliss (DT)

Bold = binky status.

Here's a few scenarios I wouldn't hate:

Scenario 1: (1) Olave, WR (2) Gordon, CB (3) Beavers, LB (4) Elliss, DT
Scenario 2: (1) Booth Jr, CB (2) Harris, LB (3) Mathis, DT (4) Phillips, WR
Scenario 3: (1) Chenal, LB (2) Jones, DT (3) Metchie, WR (4) Woolen, CB

Note: It's almost certain the Pats will draft none of these players.

Admittedly I don't watch NCAAFB tape the way I do college hoops, but didn't New England already draft a different version of Drake London in Harry?

Trapasso as CBS is predicting Mafe will rise after the combines.

PROJECTED TEAM New England PROSPECT RNK 35th POSITION RNK 4th

Mafe is going to fly up boards after he rocks his combine workout. He's a big body, too, with a nice arsenal of pass-rush moves.
It's always interesting to me to see how much some guys "move" leading up to the draft and how different rankings start to coalesce after the combine.

I just did a four-round mock (with trades, obviously) on PFN. How reflective of reality do others here consider that site to be? I mean, they’re all nonsense, but relatively speaking. Which sites are the best, in your opinion? Thanks.

I did a few on PFN a week or so ago, but stopped because their rankings/AI was just way too far off consensus right now (for example Travon Walker was there at 21 every single time.... he's not going to be anywhere near there in real life). Later in the process I think it's the best, in that it has solid rankings but also has the "trades offerred" feature which makes more realistic trades than PFF or a few others where you can get ridiculous offers accepted.

I’ve seen Kyler Gordon mocked in the late 1st early 2nd of pretty much every mock around..I highly doubt he’s available in the middle of the 3rd

I did a mock draft but I tried to draft like the team would...not necessarily addressing obvious areas of need but rather just building depth in areas where they seem to prioritize

1. Traded 21 and 209 to Dallas for 24 and 88
2. Traded 24 to Tennessee for 26 and 90
3. Traded 26 and 198 to NYJ for 36 and 68
4. Pick 36 Draft S Lewis Cine (Georgia)
5. Pick 53 Draft LB Chad Muma (Wyoming)
6. Traded 68 to Cleveland for 77 and 115
7. Pick 77 Draft WR John Metchie III (Alabama)
8. Pick 85 Draft CB Derion Kendrick (Georgia)
9. Traded 88 to Carolina for 142 and a 2023 3rd rd pick
10. Pick 90 Draft OT Kellen Diesch (Arizona State)
11. Pick 115 Draft CB JoJo Domann (Nebraska)
12. Pick 123 Jerome Ford RB (Cincinnati)
13. Trade 142 to Jacksonville for 153 and a 2023 6th rd pick
14. Pick 153 Draft ED Adam Anderson (Georgia)

So, the class is
36 S Lewis Cine (Georgia) (DMC replacement?)
53 LB Chad Muma (Wyoming)
77 WR John Metchie III (Alabama) (I'd like a WR earlier but this feels like a place the Pats may take one)
85 CB Derion Kendrick (Georgia)
90 OT Kellen Diesch (Arizona State)
115 CB JoJo Domann (Nebraska)
123 Jerome Ford RB (Cincinnati) (White replacement? Good pass catcher)
153 ED Adam Anderson (Georgia)

I don't know that I love it, but feels like a Pats draft

Doesn't really belong here, but couldn't find a proper spot. From Peter King's column:

The Niners have zero picks in the top 60. The Raiders have zero picks in the top 80. The Rams have zero picks in the top 100.

So my first mock of the season.
Same as last year, did it on PFN, only accepted or rejected CPU offered trades, no proposals of my own or counters.

Results:
#32 David Ojabo
#54 Sean Rhyan
#66 Bernhard Raimann
#86 Leo Chenal
#127 Nick Cross
#200 Josh Jobe
#210 Bo Melton

2023 Picks acquired in the trade downs: TEN 2nd, LV 5th

I just ran one. Accepted a couple of trade offers. Final result:

#33 - Perrion Winfrey, DT, Oklahoma
#54 - George Pickens, WR, Georgia
#65 - John Metchie, WR, Alabama
#86 - Daniel Faalele, OT, Minnesota
#127 - Derion Kendrick, CB, Georgia
#164 - Zakoby McClain, LB, Auburn
#170 - Smoke Monday, S, Auburn
#200 - Vincent Gray, CB, Michigan

Loved getting two high level SEC wide receivers, figuring at least one of them will pan out into a really good NFL WR. Winfrey can be paired with Barmore on the interior DL. Faalele helps with OL depth. And then a bunch more defensive players at positions of need.

Raimann is going top 40 maybe even top 25. Rhyan is a fantastic pick. He is my LT/OG Patriots fit binkie this year. Perfect fit. Great call. Your other picks, Chenal is not going to be there at 86 imo. Cross and Jobe are both very good later round picks who should be great on STs. Cross might eventually be a starter. All of these guys though are Patriots fits minus maybe Raimann who doesn't have enough strength for them. IMO he is more of a zone prospect. I know his backstory but I don't think he can get strong enough for them early. He is also sub 33" inch arms which is not good for an OT. He could play OG imo.

#54 - George Pickens, WR, Georgia
#65 - John Metchie, WR, Alabama
#86 - Daniel Faalele, OT, Minnesota
#127 - Derion Kendrick, CB, Georgia
#164 - Zakoby McClain, LB, Auburn
#170 - Smoke Monday, S, Auburn
#200 - Vincent Gray, CB, Michigan

Winfrey at 33 is really rich. He is generally considered a back half of day 2 or mid round 2 guy if that. He had a good senior bowl but his tape is meh. Pickens has some serious coachability questions and maturity issues. I love his tape. He is a top 40 player imo and could be one of the best WRs in this class (I didn't stutter). He is also a Patriots prototype at X. But is he a character fit? Look, if he is there at 54 and he checks out ok he is one of the 3/4 guys at the top of the list of people I want. I love Pickens.

Metchie is a slot receiver. Bill doesn't take slots day 1 or day 2. He takes slots day 3. Metchie is not the kind of player he would take.

Kendrick is not athletic enough and not the right kind of corner. He is a zone corner only.

That's his testing. That is not good, folks.

McClain is undersized and slow. He is imo a SS prospect and not an ILB but he is a hard hitter and very physical.

I know 4.69 isn't technically slow for an ILB but if he is sub 230 you want them to be in the low 4.6 to high 4.5 range. He would be a good STer though.

I love Smoke Monday as a box safety and ST prospect. If they want to add more of those types he is the guy. Great pick.

Vincent Gray is a great late round pick.

He is a hard hitter and physical as well. Would make a good STer who can try and get to be a low end CB2 or a good backup.

Both of you though - love the ideas and some of your fits IMO are what Bill might do/perfect-Patriots-prototypes.

I am at the point now where I am comfortable talking about the top 150 or so consensus prospects. I am eyeballs deep in finishing my board and noting Patriots superlatives. I have gone very deep on OL, CB, WR, and S. The rest of the positions minus TE, QB, and RB, I am just on top 125 or so guys.

I kind of feel like the pro football network board is broken in regards to Chenal, but there sure are a lot of quality linebackers in the draft.

I only accepted trades that were offered.

First Attempt
36 Travis Jones, DT
57 Jalen Pitre, S
88 Daniel Faalele Jr., OT
91 Channing Tindall, LB
93 Cam Taylor-Britt, CB
143 Leo Chenal, LB
160 Kyle Philips, WR
260 Nick Zakelj, OG
2023 Buf 3rd
2023 Ari 3rd
2023 NYJ 5th
2023 TB 6th
Second Attempt

54 Roger McCreary, CB
57 Boye Mafe, Edge
68 John Metchie III, WR
127 Leo Chenal, LB
210 Neil Farrell Jr, DT
2023 Cle 2nd
2023 Hou 2nd
2023 Buf 3rd
2023 Mia 3rd
Third Attempt (I forgot how many DT's I had also taken by 200).
54 Travis Jones, DT
85 Coby Bryant, CB
127 Darrian Beavers, LB
137 John Ridgeway, DT
170 JoJo Domann, LB

@pappymojo Pitre is a mess of a prospect in terms of consensus. I love him but safeties can slip so he might as well. He would be a tremendous fit on the Pats. Great choice. I fucking LOVE Travis Jones. He is one of the guys where I have been ahead of consensus (Jermaine Johnson, Chenal, and Beavers are other 3 I think I have been ahead of the curve on - which as an amateur is kind of thrilling).

Some of your picks are not great matches for the Pats. I have to pick up my kiddo but when I get back I will edit it. I did want to shout out your Jones, Pitre, Chenal, and Parham picks though. Great stuff.

Edit:

Faalele is a massive human being. While the Patriots typically only draft guys who have played LT at least in part in rounds 1-3 (that includes guys they project as guards) Faalele could be of interest to them because of the planet theory. Personally I don't think he is a fit. I like him more in a system that has more RPOs and quick game.

McCreary:
50332

McCreary is problematic because in college he only played press-man outside corner. He has sub 29" inch arms which eliminates him from doing that in the NFL. So he'd either have to transition to be a zone corner, not a fit here, or you would have him be a man-slot corner which IMO is his best and cleanest projection.

Tindall is undersized for them but incredibly athletic and flies downhill quickly. He can be a bit linear as an athlete though:
50333

I think he is a better fit as a 4-3 Will. If they go lighter and switch to more cover 3 though he would be a fit.

Mafe is a fit but he is going either first round or top 40. I really love him but he is a high risk high reward prospect.

Bryant is not a fit. Not terribly athletic. He is more of a zone corner and imo a backup one.

Yeah it's hard to tell with PFN where they are with relation to consensus, like Raimann, I missed he was on the board when I took Rhyan, I probably could/should have flipped them, and Chenal.... I probably had a chance he lasted to 127, he's SO low on their board, but I took him 86 because that felt like "okay if he unexpectedly falls because of fit issues or something he could MAYBE get there".

PFN seems to be outside of consensus right now but I don't think it matters. Let's just mock guys, discuss fits, and hey if the guy is available at 126 on their board but is likely gone by then we can all just note that :).

Edit: a lot of this for me is just a thought exercise anyway and I could talk prospects and if I think they fit all day. It's my favorite thing to do lol.

Less about individual players as I prefer to talk about them in the fits thread (btw smu thanks for your recent post there) I think the linebacker class in this draft is very favorable for the Patriots. I could see them double dipping at the position as there as so many intriguing players and it is such a glaring need. In all the mocks I have run I can’t help myself from trading back into the 2nd and 3rd rounds.

I just wish it was as easy as the PFF simulator makes it seem - hard to believe any of the top 3 picks will be there. I'm offended by the B+ this draft got, but apparently PFF doesn't share Bill's love of left-footed punters...

21 - Chris Olave, WR, Ohio State
57 - Travis Jones, DT, Connecticut
89 - Darrian Beavers, LB, Cincinnati
91 - Dylan Parham, G, Memphis
137 - Alontae Taylor, CB, Tennessee
161 - Tycen Anderson, DB, Toledo
200 - Matt Araiza, P, San Diego State
210 - Slade Bolden, WR, Alabama

one thing I noticed... I think PFF heavily weights their "needs" in grades, so like if you take the highest rated player on the board by 20+ picks, but they don't see it as a positional need.... low grade. Draft a garbage player late but at a "need" position... A- minimum

I am not sure if Bill even considers drafting Olave because he sees him as a slot and he doesn’t draft slots early. He’s also a little small for what they like. That being said he’s a perfect fit for them. He’s a good route runner with fantastic breaks and shiftiness. He has great speed. He’d do really well here. Personally I think he has the traits to play outside vs press but it’s not a super clean projection and it won’t be his best role or something you want him playing full time. He has good hands too. He’s my WR2 and is one of the safer prospects in the draft.

I don’t think Jones falls that far but I’d be delighted if he did. All of those guys are fits. I really like what you did there. Tycen Anderson will be a ST demon at the least.

Yeah, I get the size concerns, but the dude just gets open. Even if he is slot only, he’s a real weapon there. But you’re certainly more versed in what Bill likes, so I am officially not getting my hopes up on that one.

With Taylor and Anderson, just really like that both guys are fast. Maybe overreacting to Tyreke to Miami, but I want some guys in the secondary that can run. And Slater and Bethel sadly won’t be around forever so nice to get some future ST potential.

Probably more appropriate for the Fits thread, but who are some mid to late round picks that offer special teams value? I’m looking for eventual Slater replacements. I felt last years special teams was decidedly not that special.

I will wrap up corners, safeties, linebackers and edges sometime this weekend or early next week and be able to give you a good list for that. It’s definitely something to think about as I agree with you that it needs replenishing. One name off the top of my head though is Smoke Monday, box safety out of Auburn.

PFF needs a feature that only allows me to do so many of these in a day. Zero chance Johnson is there, but pretty sure SMU would give the rest of this better than a B…

Pulled this draft off on Fanspeaks On the Clock Simulator:

R1P21: Jordan Davis DL Georgia

R2P22 Dax Hill S Michigan

R3P21 Boye Mafe Edge Minnesota

R4P22 Brandon Smith LB Penn State

R5P15 Khalil Shakir WR Boise State

R5P27 Dylan Parham G Memphis

R6P21 Luke Goedeke OT Central Michigan

R6P31 JT Woods S Baylor

I doubt this is realistic but this is how it played out. I would be psyched with this haul.

Yeah, there’s a chance your top 3 there all go in the first round. It was kinda nice to dream for a while when Mafe was consistently available in the 90s on the PFF simulator…

okay first one with the new pick (and PFN's updated board) as always only took or rejected for trades
22 (traded 21 and 170 to GB for 22 and 92): Jordan Davis DL Georgia
64 (traded 54 and 210 for 64 and 96): Chad Muma LB Wyoming
85: Kyler Gordon CB Washington
92: Jalen Tolbert WR S. Alabama
104 (traded 96 for 104 and 142): Darrian Kinnard OL Kentucky
127: Marquise Hayes OL Oklahoma
142: Alotae Taylor DB Tennessee
158: Joshua Williams DB Fayetteville State
208 (traded 200 for 208 and 225): Vincent Gray DB Michigan
225: Christopher Allen Edge Alabama

Big mistake was too many DBs, probably Taylor or Williams was a bad call.

The new pick makes mock drafts much more fun. There was a long deadzone in between 127 and 170. Still a bit of a deadzone between the third and fourth round picks, but that's solved by trading back a time or two.

I realize the probability of this is close to zero, but who are some of the players who the Pats could conceivably trade UP for in the first round?

The player who jumps out for me is Ikem Ekwonu if he somehow falls outside the top 10 (perhaps possible if a couple of teams trade into the top 10 for QBs). He'd elevate our running game to an elite level. Who else might be a target if the Pats want to move into the 10-15 range?

okay first one with the new pick (and PFN's updated board) as always only took or rejected for trades
22 (traded 21 and 170 to GB for 22 and 92): Jordan Davis DL Georgia
64 (traded 54 and 210 for 64 and 96): Chad Muma LB Wyoming
85: Kyler Gordon CB Washington
92: Jalen Tolbert WR S. Alabama
104 (traded 96 for 104 and 142): Darrian Kinnard OL Kentucky
127: Marquise Hayes OL Oklahoma
142: Alotae Taylor DB Tennessee
158: Joshua Williams DB Fayetteville State
208 (traded 200 for 208 and 225): Vincent Gray DB Michigan
225: Christopher Allen Edge Alabama

I would be doing back flips if they came away with this draft class! That is the best mock ive seen yet.

The two players who I see mocked to the Pats much more than any others are Melton and Zach Tom. I understand why on Melton with the Rutgers connection, but why Tom, is it the positional flexibility?

Somewhere
I just threw SMU’s big board at the draft simulators that people are using and can only note a few things

1) Very likely someone interesting will slide to 21
2) Despite that, feels like moving back a few spots and picking up some picks would be the most profitable course of action

Can't figure out how to post the PFF mock from my cell. Can't for the life of me figure out why Christian Harris isn't being rated as a 1st Rounder, is there just that big a glut of starter-quality LBs in the first 3 rounds?

21: CB Booth Jr, Clemson
54: LB Harris, Alabama
85: LB Darrian Beavers, Cincinnati
127: CB Cordale Flott, LSU
158: T Zach Tom, Wake Forest

Harris is a more modern linebacker. He played around 230, weighed in at the combine at 226 and has issues taking on OL. His processing is hit or miss. I’d take him day sometime day 2 but I don’t think he’ll be special. He’s going to finish somewhere in the mid 70’s to 80’s on my own board. He’s 46th on Brugler’s board, 54 or 55th on Lance Z’s nfl.com board, 53rd on PFF’s, and 32nd on Bleacher Reports. So while I’m lower on him than most, the consensus is he is a second round equivalent prospect.

I did a bunch of these; here’s a representative one. I got Johnson (edge, FSU) once, but otherwise with the exception of Dean, the guys you are getting at #21 aren’t there for me. Probably should have taken Dean at 21. Bonitto, Shakir, and Flott are pretty consistently on the board and among the highest rated remaining at those spots. Tom, Elliss, and Sewell are all guys PFF rates higher than consensus.

I do these, and always get caught up in trying to corner the marker on 2023 4th (or higher) round picks. My highest so far was 10.

When there are trade options on PFF, no actual trade is proposed to you, right? You have to construct any possible trade yourself?
That's the only thing where I prefer PFN, you get actual trade proposals.

yes. They improved slightly by giving you the "how likely is this to be accepted" bar, which if you keep it over like 60% means you don't get the terrible deals it let you make in the past, but you have to do it yourself.

You can abuse the trade mechanism for shits and giggles, but if you want your draft to be realistic, you probably need to evaluate the trade based on a trade value chart. Otherwise you can really take advantage of the system.

I think I like the fanspeak site the best mostly because I never come away with the perfect draft. I find myself having to make some really tough decisions and skipping some very obvious roster needs. There's a cliff right around the fourth round pick as especially as it relates to defensive backs.

PFF, traded back quite a bit here.

44 Travis Jones, DL, UConn
54 Leo Chanal, LB, Wisconsin
63 John Metchie, WR, Bama
78 Marcus Jones, CB, Houston
85 Jalen Armour-Davis, CB, Bama
127 Kellen Diesch, T, Arizona State
136 Damone Clark, LB, LSU
158 Bailey Zappe, QB, Western Kentucky
170 Josh Johnson, WR, Tulsa
200 Joshua Ezeudu, G, UNC
202 PUNT GOD, San Diego State
210 Jack Sanborn, LB, Wisconsin

Traded 21 to Cinci for 31, 63 and 136
Traded 31 to Cleveland for 44, 78 and 202

Reasoning was to pick up depth at every position of need, IMO(CB, WR, LB and OL). If half these picks are hits, there's less to fill when they have around 60 million in cap space next off-season, according to sportrac (and might be more). Clark will be a redshirt.

What. The. Fuck. Not a question but a statement. WR AND RB with their roster holes is criminal malpractice. Guys I gotta be honest here I’m really not a fan of mocks. They are usually awful for the Patriots. Please mock us 220 linebackers. Year after year. They know nothing.
