Also has Brandon Thomas going in the 2nd round to the Eagles. I guess he missed the news.

WalterFootball 4/9:
1. Hageman
2. Richburg
3. DaQuan Jones
4. Fiedorowicz
4. Jordan Tripp, LB, Montana

That's almost a "chalk" Patriots draft - hits the needs, all the picks make sense, reasonable value, no surprises. Obviously BB will do something weird and unexpected and this will be wrong, but it's a pretty decent mock.

Kyed weighs in with a 7-rounder: http://nesn.com/2014/04/patriots-mock-draft-three-notre-dame-players-selected-after-trade-down/
1. traded along with 93 for 39, 70, and 205
2. Tuitt
2. Niklas
3. Billy Turner, OL, North Dakota State
4. Howard Jones, LB, Shepherd
4. Storm Johnson, RB, Central Florida
6. Connor Shaw, QB, South Carolina
6. Corey Linsley, C, Ohio State
6. Rob Blanchflower, TE, UMass
7. Bennett Jackson, CB, Notre Dame

I pegged Howard Jones as an option in my "devil's advocate" draft. Nabbing Tuitt and Niklas would be nice. I'm not sure about Billy Turner. I know Storm Johnson has fans here. I like the double-dip at OL and TE, though it might be nice to have another S (though he points out Ryan's possible conversion there) and another DL.

Erik Frenz also mocks a trade back: http://www.boston.com/sports/football/patriots/extra_points/2014/04/patriots_mock_draft_70_what_if_the_patriots_dont_p.html
1. Traded 29 for 39 and 70
2. Louis Nix, DT, Notre Dame
2. Troy Niklas, TE, Notre Dame
3. Marcus Martin, C, USC
3. Bishop Sankey, RB, Washington
4. Chris Smith, DE, Arkansas
4. Kelcy Quarles, DT, South Carolina
6. Russell Bodine, C, North Carolina
6. Brock Vereen, S, Minnesota
7. Keith Wenning, QB, Ball State

I think we need a LB somewhere in there.

There has been some talk about Bennet moving to Safety in the NFL. Not that it seemed to play into Kyed reasoning.

Not a big fan of the Shaw pick and the reasoning that they can't wait another year before drafting Brady's heir.

After seeing Christian Ponder and Jake Locker both go in the top 12 a couple years ago, I'd be pretty shocked if Bridgewater fell out of the first round. Teams are terrified of not having a quarterback.

That's like a stick in your eye huh? I don't give a shit what Mike Loyko thinks.

I've been wondering if Shazier could be used in a Von Miller type of role. He's a little smaller, but actually more explosive and faster than Miller. That doesn't mean I like him for this team, because I think that should be Collins' role, but for another team it could be interesting. By the numbers Shazier is similar to both Miller and Patrick Willis.

Doug Kyed 4/22:
1. Trade back (#29 and #130 for #40, #96, #148)
2. Trent Murphy, DE, Stanford
2. Bishop Sankey, RB, Washington
3. Fiedorowicz
3. Trai Turner, G, LSU
4. Kelcy Quarles, DT, South Carolina
5. Terrence Mitchell, CB, Oregon
6. Corey Linsley, C, Ohio State
6. Kenny Guiton, QB, Ohio State
7. Rob Blanchflower, TE, UMass

I'm not sold on Murphy or Sankey, but I like the CJF / Turner / Quarles middle rounds.

Mike Loyko nepatriotsdraft.com - http://www.nepatriotsdraft.com/2014/04/2014-patriots-7-round-mock-version-5-0-and-a-few-notes.html

1. Dominique Easley, DT, Florida
2. Deone Bucannon, S, Washington State
3. Marcus Smith, Edge, Louisville
4. Brandon Coleman, WR, Rutgers
4. Andre Williams, RB, BC
6. Marion Grice, RB, Arizona State
6. Crockett Gilmore, TE, Colorado State
7. Kevin Pamphile, OT, Purdue

Also mentions Boise State DE DeMarcus Lawrence as a potential fit at 29; he's apparently getting some late buzz and the Pats cancelled a workout with him (which they did prior to drafting Solder).

Would like to hit OL earlier, but Pamphile's Pro Day numbers are very comparable to Joel Bitonio. Double-dipping at RB is interesting; the idea is Williams is more the Ridley type and Grice more the Vereen type. Not sure I'm sold. I'm torn on Easley; is he a rare chance to get a top-10 talent late in the first, or is he another Dowling who will tease us with injuries? Bucannon / Smith would be a great 2nd/3rd haul.

I love Grice. I think he projects as a better receiver than Vereen even if it takes him a year to get there. He might not ever be a complete RB but that doesn't matter in today's NFL. Torn on Williams. My initial thought on him was that he is a boom or bust guy who got a lot of carries and played smaller than his 230 pound weight. Waldman doesn't necessarily have the same take but a similar one. I'm going to share this in hopes that you guys buy his RSP. If you don't buy it you are missing out on a fantastic read:

He has Williams on the overrated: Talented but glaring holes section.

Andre Williams, Boston College (Pad Level, Speed, and Agility): When Williams puts his pad level, speed, and agility
together on a run, he looks like a top-five back in this class. And there are enough plays where he does this over the course
of his four-year career to fill a highlight reel.
However there’s a lot of feast or famine to Williams’ production and there weren’t many instances where Williams did the
bulk of the work to create his own big plays. Top prospects have a skill using their pad level, speed, and agility in tight
spaces. Williams’ best runs use these qualities in open space.
When he’s in tight space, he fails to generate a significant push, make defenders miss, or outrun an opponent’s angle.
Williams often fails to demonstrate quality power when he has a running start.
His profile at the end of this chapter will explain in detail how I might be missing something with Williams, but until we see
him perform in the NFL, I’m skeptical he has the skills in tight quarters that separate college stars from NFL starters.

Waldman spends a lot of time discussing his breakdown on Williams and comes to the conclusion that he has trouble evaluating his type of player:

I’ve missed on players in the past because I could not
project their athleticism well enough for the NFL game.
Demaryius Thomas is a great example. Thomas played in
an offense where it was difficult for me to see his speed
and agility as well as his potential as a route runner.
It will be a similar case if I miss on Williams. However, I
have to trust my process so I can get a better
understanding of how to address a player in a situation
like Williams in the future. Yet, this is a long-term
solution.
The best I can do for you in the short-term is tell you
that this ranking doesn’t match how most view Williams
and as much as I’ve watched him, I cannot see where to
adjust it. Either I’m closer to the truth and others are
way off, or I’m the the incorrect outlier.

For Williams it isn't just inconsistency it's consistent inconsistency. I'm nowhere near as skilled as Waldman at player eval. But I would rather go with a different back to complement Grice. Someone like James Wilder - a power guy with a high ceiling.

Kyed 4/24: http://nesn.com/2014/04/2014-nfl-mock-draft-patriots-pick-versatile-linebacker-in-first-round/
1. Kyle Van Noy, OLB, BYU
2. Austin Sefarian-Jenkins, TE, Washington

ASJ makes sense. I like Van Noy, and theoretically he fills the need for another edge rusher, but I'd rather more of a classic DL. Kyed has us passing on Ealy, Tuitt, Easley, and DeMarcus Lawrence (and Jernigan, but I don't think he's a great fit), who I think would fit better, as well as options at other positions Amaro, Su'a-Filo, Pryor, and Jimmie Ward.

I'm fine with passing on Lawrence and Jernigan. I definitely don't buy Van Noy over Ealy or Super Su'a. And I'm pretty sure I'd rather have Tuitt or Easley.

As for RB, WR, TE - the skilled offensive positions, there are a lot of guys who interest me in the later rounds so using a pick early on them when the lines aren't settled bothers me a bit. ASJ has a huge ceiling, I get that. I just would rather have those lines shored up.

Kyed's latest: http://nesn.com/2014/05/patriots-mock-draft-new-england-adds-high-upside-defensive-tackle/

1. Dominique Easley, DT, Florida
2. Troy Niklas, TE, Notre Dame
3. Jordan Tripp, LB, Montana
4. Dez Southward, S, Wisconsin
4. Storm Johnson, RB, UCF
6. Zach Fulton, G, Tennessee
6. Trey Burton, H-back, Florida
7. Kenny Guiton, QB, Ohio State

I'd love to get an edge rusher and OL help early, but I like most of those players and think it ticks most of the boxes.

Tripp in the 3rd? To me, that is insane.  I think there will be 50 better players with higher value who will contribute much, much more than Tripp at that slot.

Shit I really wanted them to take Hageman.  I watched a ton of Big Ten games this year and he always stood out to me.  Ah well I'll let the real experts in the Pat's draft room figure it out.

Here is my attempt at a mock draft.  Projecting a couple of big trades with San Fransisco trading up to get Sammy Watkins.  Minnesota think they'll be able to get Bridgewater after Manziel and Bortles go off the board in front of them, but Houston sneaks up and trades with New England.

1. Houston-Clowney DE
2. St. Louis-Greg Robinson OT
3. Jacksonville-Khalil Mack DE/OLB
4. Cleveland--Johnny Manziel QB
5. Oakland--Mike Evans WR
6. Atlanta--Jake Matthews OT
7. Tampa Bay--Blake Bortles QB
8. San Fransisco(from Minnesota)--Sammy Watkins WR
9. Buffalo--Eric Ebron TE
10. Detroit--Ha Ha Clinton Dix S
11. Tennessee--Anthony Barr, OLB
12. NY Giants--Taylor Lewan OT
13. St. Louis--Aaron Donald DT
14. Chicago--Darqueze Dennard CB
15. Pittsburgh--Louis Nix III DT
16. Dallas--Calvin Pryor S
17. Baltimore--Zach Martin OT
18. NY Jets--Odell Beckham WR
19. Miami--Morgan Moses OT
20. Arizona--Derek Carr QB
21. Green Bay--CJ Mosley LB
22. Philadelphia--Marqise Lee WR
23. Kansas City--Xavier Su'a-Filo OL
24. Cincinnati--Justin Gilbert CB
25. San Diego--Kyle Fuller CB
26. Cleveland--Carlos Hyde RB
27. New Orleans--Ryan Shazier LB
28. Carolina--Brandin Crooks WR
29. Houston(from New England)--Teddy Bridgewater QB
30. Minnesota(from San Fransisco)--AJ McCarron QB
31. Denver--Jason Verrett CB
32. Seattle--Joel Bitonio OL

Wow, if Houston was able to get Clowney *and* Bridgewater….that would be amazing, considering that until not that long ago, Bridgewater was considered a possible #1 pick.

PS - And I agree:  I think NE trades out of the first round, moving down to the second round and picking up a first-rounder in 2015, *or* multiple picks in rounds 2-3 in what is one of the deeper drafts in recent years.

Last night NFLN had a mock draft with most of the talking heads there led by Mayock.  Brian Billick, Marshall Faulk, Rich Eisen, Charles Davis, Daniel Jeremiah, Steve Mariucci, Dave Dameshek, and Michael Irvin were the drafters.  Irvin in particular had some head scratchers.

1. Houston (Billick) - Jadaveon Clowney, DE
2. St. Louis (Faulk) - Johnny Manziel, QB
3. Jacksonville (Eisen) - Khalil Mack, LB
4. Cleveland (Davis) - Sammy Watkins, WR
5. Oakland (Jeremiah) - Mike Evans, WR
6. Atlanta (Mariucci) - Greg Robinson, OT
7. Tampa Bay (Dameshek) - Jake Matthews, OT
8. Minnesota (Irvin) - Blake Bortles, QB
9. Buffalo (Billick) - Eric Ebron, TE
10. Detroit (Jeremiah) - Justin Gilbert, CB
11. Tennessee (Eisen) - Kyle Fuller, CB
12. NY Giants (Davis) - Taylor Lewan, OT
13. St. Louis (Faulk) - Zack Martin, OT
14. Chicago (Mariucci) - Calvin Pryor, S
15. Pittsburgh (Dameshek) - Darqueze Dennard, CB
16. Dallas (Irvin) - Aaron Donald, DT
17. Baltimore (Billick) - Ha-Ha Clinton-Dix, S
18. NY Jets (Faulk) - Xavier Su'a-Filo, OG
19. Miami (Eisen) - Cyrus Kouandjio, OT
20. Arizona (Davis) - Anthony Barr, LB
21. Green Bay (Jeremiah) - C.J. Mosley, LB
22. Philadelphia (Mariucci) - Odell Beckham Jr, WR
23. Kansas City (Dameshek) - Marquise Lee, WR
24. Cincinnati (Irvin) - Bradley Roby, CB
25. San Diego (Billick) - Jason Verrett, CB
26. Cleveland (Davis) - Teddy Bridgewater, QB
27. New Orleans (Eisen) - Brandin Cooks, WR
28. Carolina (Faulk) - Kelvin Benjamin, WR
29. New England (Jeremiah) - Austin Seferian-Jenkins, TE

That doesn't mean I like him for this team, because I think that should be Collins' role, but for another team it could be interesting. Peter King suggests this in his edge rusher summary: http://mmqb.si.com/2014/05/06/2014-nfl-draft-pass-rushers-analysis/. He calls Shazier the #4 edge rusher in the class (behind Mack / Clowney / Ealy). Through that lens, he's kind of like a Dee Ford who can cover, or a Kyle Van Noy with more athleticism. As you note, however, that's kind of what Collins is for. And as an edge rusher, Shazier's even more undersized for what the Pats typically look for than he would be at ILB.

Two more thoughts on Shazier:
1) Evaluations of his instincts are all over the place. Some sources will credit him with great instincts; others feel he's deficient in this area. That makes a big difference in his evaluations.
2) I don't think this draft is deep in coverage-type LB: I see a lot of guys like Max Bullough, Jordan Zumwalt, Shayne Skov, and Chris Borland in the middle rounds, guys who would be more like Brandon Spikes than like Lavonte David. As I've stated, I disagree that a coverage LB is a major need, but if the Pats perceive it as one, I can see where Shazier would be appealing relative to the later-round options.
