We're starting to get close to Draft Day, so I was curious to see some projections. One of the cooler innovations of the past year or two is the advent of mock draft machines. There's three that I know of:

Fan Speak:
https://fanspeak.com/ontheclock-nfl-mock-draft-simulator/I like Fan Speak because you get to see and use different boards. Matt Miller and Scott Wright both have fairly recent boards up, and they're two guys who have been in the draft business for a while and generally know what they're talking about. The only downside is you can't choose a fast mode; it's a bit slow. But First World Problems, and all.

The Draft Network:
https://thedraftnetwork.com/mock-draft-machineTDN was the first draft machine I ever encountered. I think they make regular updates to their board, but I often find some of the rankings a bit off. So when I'm going through and a Day 2 guys is available late in the 6th, I kind of roll my eyes and select someone more likely to be around. But they have a fast mode and you can plow through quickly.

PFN
https://profootballnetwork.com/mockdraft/I just ran across this one the other day, so it was cool to see a new one. On the plus side, their fast mode is REALLY fast. Their board seems a bit better than TDN's, but not as realistic as Miller or Wright on Fan Speak.

In any event, any other draft machines out there? I'll probably post the results of a mock every so often; it'd be cool to see some others to get a feel for who people are targeting and where they might be available.

FanSpeak one is doing some weird things with Tua, 2 mocks in he fell to the Jags at 20 in the first, and I took him at 23 in the second

It is very minor compared to the current state of the planet but the fact that he won't be able to tryout may really hurt him.

From PFN. (Geez, that one's fast.) Would have liked to trade down in Round 1.

23. Terrell Lewis OLB Alabama
87. Ross Blacklock DT TCU
98. Donovan Peoples-Jones WR Michigan
100. Hunter Bryant TE Washington
125. Darrynton Evans RB App State
172. James Proche WR SMU
195. Charlie Heck OT UNC
204. Rodrigo Blankenship K Georgia
212. Gage Cervenka C Clemson
213. Jared Pinkney TE Vanderbilt
230. Justin Strnad ILB Wake Forest
241. Javelin Guidry S Utah

Edit: I actually like Terrell Lewis -- a fantastic athlete at a position of need, and he sounds like Mike Tyson! But he's been injury-prone, and he's probably not a great *value* at 23.

That's a pretty good haul in those top six picks, though I'm not sold on Lynn Bowden. What's the case for him? Doesn't seem like a polished route runner, nine fumbles, etc. He's an exciting player, but too much of a risk for Day 2 for me (even the end of Day 2).

Matt Miller dropped a new board on Fan Speak. This is just about my dream draft, so it will never happen...

23: R1P23: LB KENNETH MURRAY, OKLAHOMA
I see him as a Jamie Collins replacement. Fits the NE physical profile for LBs, team captain, flies around the field. Versatile enough to stand up and rush off the edge.

87: R3P23: TE ADAM TRAUTMAN, DAYTON
Profiles as a complete TE, but I don't expect a big impact in 2020.

98: R3P34: EDGE DARRELL TAYLOR, TENNESSEE
One of my favorite edge players in the class; I see him as an eventual KVN replacement who is more of a rusher than off-the-ball type at the moment.

100: R3P36: WR BRYAN EDWARDS , SOUTH CAROLINA
Another one of my favorites; good at everything he does (but not great). Can be your Day 1 punt returner, too. Can align anywhere, tough, and versatile.

125: R4P19: DL RASHARD LAWRENCE, LSU
Lawrence Guy 2.0. Physical, nasty tone-setter.

172: R5P26: OT HAKEEM ADENIJI, KANSAS
Athletic (34" vertical) OT/G hybrid. At 6'4, not the longest OT but I'd start him off there until he shows he can't do it. Pushes Cajuste for potential swing OT spot (they'll probably keep 4 OTs).

195: R6P16: S K'VON WALLACE, CLEMSON
Not sure he'd be here, but a good football player. Blitzes, covers the slot and can play in the box despite his size.

204: R6P25: DL NICK COE, AUBURN
Reminds me of the Cowart pick last year. Tools and pedigree are better than the production. Didn't play much in 2019 but looked like an early round pick earlier on at Auburn.

212: R6P33: S REGGIE ROBINSON II, TULSA
Jim Nagy is high on Robinson--thinks he can be a future starter. Long (6'1) and good straight line speed (4.44) but a but tight in the hips.

213: R6P34: K TYLER BASS, GEORGIA SOUTHERN
Nagy thinks Bass is the first specialist off the board. Good enough for me.

230: R7P16: WR CHRIS FINKE, NOTRE DAME
Destiny, right?

241: R7P27: CB JAVELIN GUIDRY, UTAH
Jon Jones 2.0. 4.29 40 with 21 reps, but at 5'9, he'll be off a lot of boards. Some see him as a slot corner, others as a safety. Looks to be a good gunner on ST. Fits the NE mold.

Thanks for the heads up.
I've used fanspeak quite a bit. Hadn't seen pfn before. I like the option to trade.
Traded 23rd and comp pick for Indys two 2nd rounders with Love on the board.

Ha, that's funny. Zero chance Simmons drops, but beyond that, this haul has a lot of my favorites. I haven't dug into Mooney but I feel good about the rest of those selections.

I just started one on TDN, and the following are available for the Pats at 23:

Tua
Lamb
Ruggs
Jeudy
Andrew Thomas

I think I'll just restart it now, that doesn't even make sense.

Edit: Oh, and both the Bengals and Dolphins passed on him and Burrow went #6 to the Chargers

Kinlaw at 23 is Godmode. He’s a top 10 talent and imo the best DT in the draft. He will end up being a top 5 prospect I imagine (for me). Scheme fit and imo he is Richard Seymour 2.0 (obviously all prospects have risk but that’s the type of talent he is).

Love Juaun Jennings and the Bartch picks too.

I have nine guys I especially do not like this year: QB Jordan Love, Grant Delpit, Albert O, Neville Gallimore, Laviska Shenault, Jalen Reagor, Jeremy Chinn, Kyle Dugger, and Curtis Weaver.

Love is just a turnover machine. He’s got a million dollar arm and ten cent head. It wasn’t just his offensive scheme and coaching changes and loss of personnel this year that hurt him. Last year he was top 5 in interceptable passes or lead the NCAA in dropped interceptions (something like that). He is not good under pressure and I question his reading ability and decision making. I liked Mahomes when he came out (receipts are on this board). This isn’t Mahomes 2.0. Also, do we think BB is going to want to draft a guy who will always be more turnover prone?

Grant Delpit: I haven’t posted my updated list of rankings yet because I finished RBs but am only halfway through safeties. I’ll be at around 150ish prospects watched and written up when done with safeties and they thin out quickly. I think I will be able to get to 250-275 prospects this year thanks to quarantine. As for Delpit I’ve watched him in 2018 and 2019. His tackling form was better in 2018 before he broke his collar bone in spring ball and played with a hurt shoulder from October on. But it wasn’t that great in 2018. Delpit missed 25% of tackles last year. He dives at guys feet. He can't tackle kickers and punters in the open field. *pulling up my notes*: he had around 6 missed tackles against Auburn one of which went straight to the house. I counted 4 TDs he gave up due to missed tackles in the 4 games I watched.

Albert O: Is not an effective inline blocker. Runs a 4.49 but plays at a 5.0, or a 4.85. Why? He can’t run routes. This guy has a floor of total bust. Ok let me rephrase he has a floor as a red zone and 3rd down weapon when you need to make a contested throw and have your elite contested catch guy make it. That’s him. I hate the term boom or bust prospect but that’s classic Albert O. Oh, guy has stiff hips too. He’s pure straightline speed. No feel for how to run routes through traffic either. He’s like Tina driving Bob’s car in Bob’s burgers.

Gallimore can’t stop the run or anchor to save his life. He’s a penetrator only. He’s a rotational pass rushing DT and that’s it. Two gap? Not a chance. Guy gets washed out against the run so much he might as well just fall down off the snap. Probably would clog up more run lanes that way at least.

Jeremy Chinn and Kyle Dugger: full disclose I like both these guys and think they are at the minimum good to elite special teamers. They both have a similar profile. They are small school Strong safety or nickel backer prospects who did very well against their level of competition but didn’t dominate it. Their ability to read, process, anticipate in zones is seriously lacking. They aren’t even that great diagnosing the run. They will need to sit a year before they contribute. Dugger is already 24 years old and he’s the more advanced of the two. Unlike Albert O they profile to be elite special teamers and they both have all the traits and athleticism to be good starters. I have heard a lot of talk of them in the top 75. I think there is a lot more risk with them than acknowledged. They are fine back half of round 3 or round 4+ prospects but not round 2. BB values smarts above all else in a safety and neither of these guys have shown it on the field. And it shows. Against FCS or below level completion.

Curtis Weaver he’s not a 3-4 OLB. Guy is not fast enough to cover. He’s being talked about as a end of the first but second round pick and I just don’t see it. Too slow and not enough burst. I think with him he has a floor as an early down rotational edge against the rush and he has great hands. But if a tweener too in that I wish he was bigger and a more traditional DE.

I've bee playing around with Bears drafts, trying to figure out ways they could drop back from 43 or 50 to get back some of the midround picks they lack. Getting good value is tough, and hunting around for matches helped me realize how different the trade dynamics will be this year. Teams will be working with less information in the absence of many pro days and in-person visits where team doctors can get a full exam in. Will some teams try to mitigate their increased risk by dropping back and picking up more guys? Will some teams get overly aggressive in moving up for guys they know are medically clean? Hell, will some teams decide there's too many knowns this year and try to flip picks for next year?

I don't get the grading. I drafted Blankenship at 241 and it rated as a 38.2. I drafted Trautman at 98 and got a 23.7. Something is wonky

Yeah, i don't fully get the grading either. I generally set the parameters for the board to be 25% PFF/75% public, and non-random selections. That seems to get more realistic picks. The trading around is definitely fun.

Trautman and Kmet are there like every time at 87. I don't think that's realistic.
You may need to tweak the configuration settings because Kmet usually goes around 60 in my mocks. Trautman is pretty much always around at 87, which I think is reasonable. He has a lot of the same qualities that Adam Shaheen had coming out of Ashland, for better or for worse. I don't think the league is quite as high on Trautman as Draft Twitter is. Late 3rd is probably a fair projection.

What are you using for settings? I was going 75% PFF / 25% public, draft "a little" for need, care for positional value "a little", and "not random at all".

Here's a good one I got. I drafted Baun at 44 after a trade back, so my team's greatest position of need a good 15-25 picks after where he normally goes..... got a 53.4, lowest grade of any pick I made.

Edit- yeah the grading is completely broken and or based on a nonsensical decision tree. jsinger's post above took Malik Harrison at 52. I just took him at 98 and got a grade 10 points lower for the pick?

That PFF Mock site is either getting hammered right now or stopped working for me for some reason. Before it crashed, I was well on my way to completely punting on 2020 (their trade formula is a bit too generous)...

Traded:

  • 23 for 37 and '21 1st (LAC)
  • 37 for 52 and 57
  • 52 for 60 and '21 3rd (BAL)
  • 57 for 73 and '21 2nd (JAX)
  • 60 for 66 and '21 3rd (WAS)
  • 66 for 107 and '21 2nd (CIN)
  • 73 for 102, 124, and '21 3rd (PIT)
Net:

23 for 102, 107, 124, and six '21 picks (LAC 1st, JAX 2nd, CIN 2nd, WAS 3rd, PIT 3rd, Bal 3rd)

It's torture watching BB do the draft, especially when he trades back. Yeah we pick up extra picks that he usually makes good use of, but man watching our turn come up and then disappear, and watching other teams take good players, while we wait another 27 picks before making a selection....it's brutal.

So used these settings (75/25 public, a little need, a little PV) I also only traded if I was on the clock and a team was interested, and did not trade for future picks. Even with those limitations I think I did way too well on the trades.

Matt Miller has a new board up at fanspeak. There are definitely guys I think he's way too low on (e.g., Davon Hammilton, K'von Wallace), but Miller is legitimately good and connected. This mock was a little different from some of my usual results. Lynch is growing on me as a Day 2 rotational DL. He's got more rush upside than the Beau Allen, Lawrence Guy types, with a great motor. Kareem is a tough SOB who can set the edge and maybe has some untapped rush upside. He fits the Simon/Calhoun mold but a bit bigger and longer. This is the first time I've taken Hopkins; TE is basically a crap shoot (more than normal) this year. Hopkins is at least a good athlete who can run the Move TE routes. I'm a big Charles fan; Nagy thinks he has late 1st round talent but the suspensions (I believe drug related) probably pushes him down to Day 2.

For PFF, Mike Renner said he uses alot for need and a little for pos value. He also said he uses "100% NFL" by which I assume he meant 100% public? If you want to know how the PFF guys think most reflects the real draft.

Here is my best attempt so far:
- 23 for 38 and '21 1st (CAR)
- 38 for 43 and 50
- 43 for '21 1st (LAR)
- 50 for '21 1st (TB)

Net: 23 for 3 first rounders in 2021 (CAR, LAR, TB)

Then I swung:
- 87 for 92 + '21 3rd (BAL)
- 100 for '21 3rd (WAS)
- 125 for '21 3rd (NO)

yeah the valuation on future picks in garbage

Edit- one thing I will say, is for non-future trades, the settings Renner mentioned seem better than what I had been using, less teams looking to make small trade-ups and thos that are are willing to pay less.
