My day started with a broken windshield, but now it’s looking up!
Heitz was on a 1-year extension after Mansueto failed to land Jim Curtin last year, so this is not a surprise. It does raise the question if Mansueto has someone lined up or if Heitz is leaving now so he can make a clean transition to his next thing.
It’s an attractive job. Chicago is a sleeping giant of a market. Last year’s anonymous survey through the Athletic identified Mansueto as an owner who is willing to spend to win. Plus there is the affiliate club in Switzerland, Lugano, that adds unique opportunities for an MLS club.
On the upside, Heitz did brilliantly with Jhon Duran, and if the player transfers again, Chicago will get a slice of that fee. He also got $10m for Gaga, a teenaged goalkeeper.
Heitz got the academy pipeline flowing. Brady and Guti were already with the club, but Heitz made clear pathways for their advancement and has been pushing along another cohort that should hit over the next 2 seasons - Reynolds, Oregel, and Rodriquez.
But he never got the hang of building an MLS roster or swallowed his ego to partner with a strong, veteran manager to build the squad. The DP transfers have ranged from disaster to replacement-level player (tho I’m still holding out hope for Cuypers…). Until this year, Heitz had an aversion to bringing in MLS vets, which hamstrung the whole operation. And then there was the pointless public feud with Djordje and his family, who also happen to run the biggest youth league in the Chicago area. Just stupid.
Fire Twitter are giddy. After a miserable Leagues Cup, we’ve had nothing to do but stew and complain. Now at least change is coming.
