Surprised not to see a general MLB thread.

Some rumors out there today that Philly and Balt have a handshake agreement in place for MM.

"Just got a text saying Phils and Orioles have a "Handshake Agreement" in place for Machado. What does that mean? Nothing. Absolutely nothing."

deGrom or his agent, trying to get out from the Mets...possibly

And this move was blasted on the MLB Network by Peter Gammons, essentially saying it's a chickenshit move by deGrom or his agent

i mean, it obviously is. what would DeGrom sign right now? it is a pretty obvious trade demand, crafted to try and not lose face.

Would make sense Machado going to Philly - there are a bunch of ex-O's executives on that team (MacPhail, Rice, Klentak)....

Wonder if they are going to also take some of the other available O's (like Britton) as part of a deal, of they they go separately....

I've believed that the Dodgers made the most sense once Seager went down. Exactly what they need is a rental.
With all the teams the bidding, an expensive rental. The Dodgers would probably be his best chance at a World Series. Of the NL teams who are rumored to be after him anyway.

Machado makes so much more sense for LA than Philadelphia. The Phillies are a year or two ahead of schedule and a few games ahead of their Pythag record. I get that the NL is wide open, but this is not the point to trade years of control of multiple players for three months of a superstar.

http://www.espn.com/mlb/story/_/id/24119742/baltimore-orioles-deal-place-manny-machado-working-specifics-trade

Olney reported Sunday that even if the Phillies do not trade for Machado this summer, they would ardently pursue him as a free agent after the season. Philadelphia's front office is loaded with former Orioles officials who were involved in the drafting and developing of Machado -- including president Andy MacPhail, general manager Matt Klentak and assistant GM Ned Rice.

In a similar note, Scarlett Johansson to be my next wife, if the two sides can finish the deal.

I both love and hate the trade deadline because tweets like this mean add next to nothing to the already known information that the two teams are talking.
Terrible analogy. The A's and Mets are talking about finishing a deal. You are not talking to Scarlett

The last time the A’s were buyers was when they got Lester from the Red Sox in 2014. That had a lot better chance of being a difference maker than this one. A’s really think they have a chance?

They didn't give up much.

They maybe got a lot of international spending money, some reports are saying.

OK, but it’s kind of the whole philosophy of the thing. We are so used to the A’s selling off experienced players. Maybe they see Familia as a building block for the future rather than a key piece this year.
Doubtful, he will be a free agent. It’s generally smarter to sell veterans these days as opposed to buying, regardless of payroll.

The Mets got a 23 year old 3b in high A OPS'ing .741, and a 26 year old arm in AAA.
The 1 mill in slot money is obviously helpful but that seems extremely light.
Maybe the rental relief market won't be bonkers.

Id wait to see what a non Mets team gets in return for a rental before we think the market is weak

This is more likely:

Ken Rosenthal‏Verified account @Ken_Rosenthal 9m9 minutes ago

Deadline is 10 days away. #Athletics four games out in WC race. If they fall back, they could flip Familia, adopting same strategy #Twins took last season, pivoting from buyers to sellers. #Twins acquired Jaime Garcia on 7/24, then traded him on 7/29 and Brandon Kintzler on 7/31.

This is some special kind of incompetence for the Mets the last 2 days. Terrible return on Familia and not eating any money after they said they would in order to get better prospects. Manager not knowing health status of best player. Best player getting hurt after 1 game after saying he passed all tests.

Houston apparently going hard after Britton. We should all be hoping that Houston misses out on him.
If a) Britton's still any good and b) Hinch doesn't hold him out of a playoff game

Britton's only been scored on twice in 16 appearances since he's returned. Got bombed for 4 runs in his 5th appearance and 2 in his 8th appearance.

Yeah, but even in those 14 scoreless appearances he's allowed 10 walks against only 12 strikeouts. That's 6.3 BB/9 and 7.54 K/9, or 19% and 23%, respectively. Again, excluding the two starts in which he allowed 6 runs.

Notably, 64% of his balls in play in those 14 scoreless appearances have been ground balls (18% FB, 18% LD).

But Archer is not Sale in any way, shape or form, other than they are the same age and have nice team friendly contracts
Comparison ends there

edit...sorry, they are both named Chris

The sad thing is the Rays are not that bad. They may have a good team if they add some key pieces, but they know they are going nowhere in 2018.

Soria to the Brewers and rumors they’re in on Wheeler. Should mean Happ happens soon.

Nats could be sellers.

My guess is that if this 4-game series via Mia does not go well, they will be sellers. The playoff math for them is dismal.

Rizzo is smart, so if they are sellers, passan’s list will not exhaust who will be available if they sell.

I don’t know if Scherzer would be in play, but Murphy and...Harper?

Scherzer is not going to be in play. This would be a fold on the season, not a fold on the next 3 years. You deal free agents to be.

Harper is the big question.
Yes. And I don't buy for a minute the suggestion that if they deal him, they have screwed their chances of re-upping him. Harper would be delighted to change the narrative on his season down the stretch and in the playoffs.

(That doesn't mean the Nats do or should want to re-up him. With Soto and Robles in the outfield, I'd spent that money elsewhere.)

The question is -- what can you get for a three-month Harper rental?
