Quintana to LAA makes me wonder if they’re out on Bauer now.

Heaney / Ohtani / Bundy / Quintana / Canning / Barria (no options) / Sandoval

I think a lot of teams will run 6-man rotations this year but that’s a pretty full one, with another 4 guys in the bullpen with guaranteed spots.

Toronto has to target a top end pitcher at this point, right? That rotation is Ryu and a whole lot of question marks (with some legitimate potential).

Did I miss something on the Canadian-US exchange rate? Jays are spending some serious coin. And that lineup looks fantastic.
They spent very little before yesterday, their total tax number for 2021 right now is around $128M before Brantley.

Hazel Mae had the same Brantley news too, and she covers the team. Maybe just bad sources in the Jays organization, or they were all using the same wrong source.

Nats sign Ryan Zimmerman, 1 year, $1 million

https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2021/01/nationals-re-sign-ryan-zimmerman.html
The Nationals are bringing back longtime cornerstone Ryan Zimmerman on a one-year deal worth $1MM, reports USA Today’s Bob Nightengale (Twitter link).

Zimmerman, though, could certainly form a platoon with the switch-hitting Bell, who has historically been much better from the left side of the dish. Bell is a career .271/.360/.485 hitter as a lefty but just a .232/.315/.410 batter from the right side of the dish. Zimmerman, meanwhile, has clobbered lefties throughout his 15-year MLB career: .311/.390/.527.

Mets have an offer on the table for Bauer. Stealing from MLBTR

The Mets’ interest in Trevor Bauer has reached the point that they’ve made a formal offer to the right-hander, reports SNY’s Andy Martino (via Twitter). However, despite a report from USA Today’s Bob Nightengale indicating that the Mets have put forth a record-setting annual value in their offer, each of Martino, MLB Network’s Jon Heyman and MLB.com’s Mark Feinsand report that the Mets do not have an offer that strong on the table. Nightengale has since walked back the AAV portion of his report but further tweeted that a Mets source “confirmed” they’ve made a formal offer to Bauer (obviously, at a non-record-setting rate).

The NL East is shaping up to be a fun division, especially if the Mets were to sign Bauer.
deGrom/Bauer/Stroman/Carrasco plus 1 of Matz/Peterson/Lucchesi looks solid.
Ease Thor back targeting a stretch/playoff peak and that’s a great playoff rotation.

Was coming here to post that also, that seemed inevitable from the second they hired Dombrowski, just a question of settling on terms.

The Yankee lineup must need IVs to replenish the fluids from the drool thinking about facing not just Robbie Ray for the Blue Jays but now Steven Matz too. Toronto is going to be tough overall but NY has always killed Matz, his last four starts against them (from 2016-2018) he has allowed 21 ERs in 20.1 innings and NY has only gotten more right-handed and tougher since then and Matz has only gotten worse.

A trade of Nolan Arenado finally might be coming into focus.

The Cardinals are in discussions with the Rockies about a deal that would bring the five-time All-Star third baseman to St. Louis, according to major-league sources. No deal appears close, and the other players who might be involved are not known.

Arenado, 29, likely would waive his no-trade clause to join the Cardinals, and perhaps agree to push back his right to opt out after the 2021 season. The Rockies, to escape his $199 million guarantee over the next six seasons, almost certainly would absorb at least one high-priced veteran from the Cardinals while also receiving prospects in the deal.

League sources offered varied assessments of where the talks stood Thursday night. One cautioned that a trade might not happen at all, but others believe the Rockies are motivated to move Arenado and the Cardinals are motivated to acquire him. The Braves also checked in on Arenado, but made no progress toward a deal, a source said.

My friend who often gets STL scoops early texted me this, he thinks it is happening (money is unclear):

Rockies get: Matt Carpenter, Tommy Edman, Lane Thomas, Miles Mikolas, and Johan Oviedo

Cardinals get: Nolan Arenado, Jon Gray

Rosario has a 1.031 career OPS at Progressive Field against some pretty good pitching staffs, but I feel like Cleveland is a couple of years too late with this acquisition. Still, it's nice to see them add a legitimate starter to an outfield that's been terrible for years, hasn't developed more than a solid platoon outfielder in the past decade, and hasn't signed a legitimate starting outfielder other than Jay Bruce in the past 5 years.

The bad news is an almost historically bad offense last season is still even worse on paper now, and cornering the market on Rosarios (Eddie and Amed) is going to make for some short at-bats in 2021. The good news is that with this and the re-signing of Cesar Hernandez, the Indians have returned the title if "cheapest team in baseball" back to the Pirates.

Didi back to the Phillies at 2/28 and Rodon back to the White Sox, pending a physical.

I do not understand the Cobb addition for the Angels. $14.3 million AAV for a pitcher with a lot of risk and not much upside. It seems like they could get a better pitcher for fewer dollars in free agency (still) and not have to give up any prospects. There must be substantial cash and/or another worthwhile player going to LA. Even then . . .
O’s eating over half the salary. Can’t remember if that changes the cap hit for the Angels or not tbh.
