Damn, this sucks for the sport and for the White Sox. Him and Eloy being down makes them a lot less interesting, and a lot less competitive this year. Hopefully they can both make strong comebacks, either late this season or next year.

Maybe they will just have a dominant rotation instead? Rodon looks like he has put it all together finally, Dylan Cease has been throwing well, and Kopech looks like the real deal. Giolito/Keuchel/Lynn/Rodon/Cease with Kopech as the 6th starter is a potentially amazing rotation. AL Central is weak, they could still get Eloy and Roberts back by playoff time.

I didn't know that - though looking now, I guess there's been 1 upheld protest in the last 34 years, so if they're not going to actually do anything ever then might as well just get rid of it

When I read this, I thought "that must be the pine tar game with George Brett". Then I followed the link and realized that game was 38 years ago. Holy shit.

This could go in the media forum but Tom Boswell is retiring from the Wash Post after 52 years. Farewell column is here, including a bit about the 2004 ALCS which he calls "the best sporting event I’ve ever experienced."

When I was a kid, I wrote him a letter saying that I wanted to be a sportswriter. He sent me back a handwritten card. Seems like a great guy.

Runners are taught to slide under the fielder to try to avoid the tag, or at least to make the fielder work to apply the tag. They aren't taught to take the fielder out, and clearly Machado was not trying to do that. Edman just happened to run into his path as he slid. The players and coaches are right, totally clean play. It's only because it's Machado that anyone got up in arms at all about it. Much ado over nothing.

6-8 weeks means at least a grade 2 injury.

Not too surprised, he could walk off under his own power but also seemed like a pretty serious limp and no-doubt he had to leave the game.

Huge bummer for the Angels

Andres Gimenez, who the Indians acquired in the Lindor trade with the hype of being Lindor's replacement, has been demoted to AAA after putting up an OPS+ of 47 through 29 games. I think he'll still be an above-average defensive shortstop with a solid bat, but he's clearly gotten stuck inside his own head… and now he might want to start worrying about some of the infielders in the system who arguably have higher ceilings. Tonight he's replaced by short-term bullpen help, but Owen Miller really needs to be added to the 40-man roster now and promoted. Miller was considered a secondary piece in the Clevinger trade, but at the moment he's batting .500 through his first 46 AB's in AAA this season. He projects as a 2B long-term, but he's spent most of his pro career at short. Cleveland could either transfer Roberto Perez to the 60-day IL or DFA Yu Chang to make the promotion. I don't think Chang will ever make enough contact to be more than a AAAA guy, but he's also never been given a role at the MLB level where he's had any chance to succeed.

Orioles Chris Davis out for remainder of the year due to hip surgery
https://www.espn.com/mlb/story/_/id/31473228/baltimore-orioles-chris-davis-miss-rest-season-hip-surgery

I haven't been following the MLB too closely and was surprised that Davis was still on a roster, let alone the Orioles roster still

edit/ The Orioles still owe his $23M for this year and the same for next year as well. Yikes
This ranks up there with some of the worst contracts ever handed out
-8 OPS+ in 16 games last year

I know that the Pujols contract is terrible, as is the Miggy deal. But the Chris Davis contract has to be in the team picture for worst ever.

From Chris Davis to Ubaldo Jiminez, Mark Trumbo, Alex Cobb, and even back to Albert Belle, the Orioles haven't made too many good free agent signings in their recent past. Appears they have also given up to early on pitchers like Gausman, Arrieta, and yet to be determined Dylan Bundy. I'm sure I am missing a bunch.

I follow Feyereisen some as he is a former Yankee prospect, he was great for a while but has given up 6 ERs in his last two outings. Of course TB will probably turn him into an ace closer, but this still feels like they are selling low because they need to start promoting guys.

I’ve said this a few times on this board already, but that team gets expensive quickly in the next two years. Adames is arb eligible next season and once the super two deadline passes, there is no reason to keep Franco and Brujan in the minors. An Adames trade has been inevitable for awhile. I wouldn’t be surprised if Glasnow is gone this off-season either. Lowe is signed cheaply for years so he probably sticks around because he won’t ever get expensive.

My first reaction was it was selling low a bit on Adames, but it’s really such a good match on needs that I think that’s a bit beside the point. Adames has not been very good at the plate for awhile, Rays really need bullpen help this year and Brujan and Wander (and Walls and Padlo) have made it pretty clear they’re ready, so it’s time to start turning over the lineup and they need the roster spots. If Feyereisen and Rasmussen become somewhat reliable bullpen arms, will be huge for this year.

There's a different situation that's been bugging me for a while because I can't find an answer: What happens if a hitter has a tall pop-up that comes down vertically right onto first base (no one on - no IFR). The batter has a right to the base and the fielder has a right to the ball. Ball and runner arrive at first base simultaneously and the first baseman gets bowled over.

What's puzzling me is that it's not like the ball's being thrown (or run) to first where the fielder can and should avoid the runner. In this case case - the ball's coming straight down on top of the base. Is it still the first baseman's responsibility to avoid the runner...and/or vice versa?

J.C. Mejia is clearly taking one of those spots, as he's already on the team, stretched out to start and been impressive in his first two appearances. He came out of the pen last night, but should be available to start by Friday. McKenzie and Logan Allen are completely unplayable right now although technically both are available because of the IL move. Cal Quantrill can be stretched out later this week to start in a 7-inning game by Monday. It's probably a question of whether Scott Moss or Eli Morgan makes his MLB debut this week. Moss would have been first in line for a promotion, but was injured most of the spring, so Morgan is in better shape.

I am still laughing at "Plesac was "aggressively" taking off his shirt after his last outing and caught it on a chair. "

Like was he trying to be hulk hogan?

I'm not sure if it's better or worse than Jesus Luzardo breaking his pinky finger earlier this season by hitting it on a desk while playing video games. I'll always remember Ricky Bones for throwing his back out trying to get out of a recliner.

From Sandy Springs, Ga., police: Officers allegedly witnessed Atlanta Braves outfielder Marcell Ozuna grab his wife by her neck and throw her against a wall. He also hit her with a cast on his arm, according to the department's release
Good bye!

He should not step foot on a mlb field until this is sorted.
