Jon Heyman of CBS Sports reports that the Red Sox are trying to land both Hanley Ramirez and Pablo Sandoval through free agency.

The Red Sox have already shown their interest publicly in Sandoval and are believed to have an offer on the table in the range of five years and $95 million. They have also been in contact with Ramirez's agent since the winter meetings and are believed to be working towards a deal with the star shortstop. Adding both of them would certainly be a massive upgrade to the Boston offense and could vault them to the top of the American League East.

It is, and it's being discussed on the main board where Red Sox specific topics are supposed to be posted. This forum is for general MLB news. If you can't post on the main board yet and have something to share that hasn't been posted there, PM a member who can post there with the information and they can usually post it for you. Most will credit the lurker who PMed them when they do.

Heyman:

The Yankees have signalled a willingness to give free agent third baseman Chase Headley a three-year deal, but with a thin third-base market now that Aramis Ramirez and Pablo Sandoval are off the board, it appears Headley is looking around for something better.

By all accounts the Headley-Yankees second-half marriage was a major hit last year, but he likely believes he can beat three years elsewhere.

The Giants have contacted Headley in the wake of Sandoval's departure, as as was reported here Tuesday, and a few more teams could be interested in a starter at third. The Indians have reached out, according to Anthony Castrovince of MLB.com, the Jays need a third baseman (or second baseman) and showed interest in Headley at the July trade deadline and his old Padres team still seeks a third baseman following their own aggressive putsuit of Sandoval.

As an aside, I hate it when Heyman writes shit like "as was reported here first" especially when it includes a typo.

From the “well, that’s neat I guess but I suppose it doesn’t really matter” file:

Multiple sources say #Yankees talked to #Phillies about trading for Jimmy Rollins. But asking price was so high, Yanks moved on….
— Jayson Stark (@jaysonst) November 26, 2014

The Yankees spent the last five years or so dealing with an old shortstop who couldn’t play defense anymore, so I guess an old shortstop who’s still pretty darn good is an improvement. Still, probably not what the Yankees want unless it’s close to free for them.

@susanslusser: I am hearing rumblings that the #Athletics are close to a fairly significant deal that involves Jeff Samardzija.

@susanslusser: #Athletics would be getting back several pieces, and they're targeting hitters, an ML source tells me.

Curious to see what 1 year of Shark is worth. May set the market for Zimmermann.

A's are in GFIN mode again. Oo, ah, look out American League. Maybe some day. Maybe this year even. Maybe not.

Losing both your aces in the off-season strikes me as an odd approach to "going for it."

It wouldn't be the Sox now, but Donaldson could bring back several players.

Dave Cameron with a discussion-starting tweet:

We're all speculating internally anyway, so Ill throw this out there. Sonny Gray for Mookie Betts: who says no? Im not sure.

From Twitter: @pg_benson Hearing from reliable source #WhiteSox will acquire RHP Jeff Samardzija this weekend from #Athletics.

If true, I assume deal would be built around Alexei Ramirez, resolving the A's lack of SS.

who then plays ss for the White Sox? seems like it would be a trade centered around prospects if they trade him, not a 33 year old SS getting $10 mil a year

Tim Anderson, the White Sox top prospect, likely takes over at short. It would be an aggressive promotion, but the White Sox tend to be extremely aggressive in that regard.

Or Marcus Semien, or Carlos Sanchez. Probably won't completely replace his production but they have options if they trade him for Shark.

“@danpfeiffer74: Source tells me #Yankees made long-term offer in neighborhood of 6 yrs to Max Scherzer this morning. Still working to confirm w/2nd source.”

Scherzer is the most desirable free agent starter (in terms of youth, health and peripherals), but I can't see him signing for less than 7 or even 8 years.  He turned down 6/144 from Detroit before the season, and went out and posted another monster year.  I'd hate for the Yankees to secure his services, and I'm confident that someone will outbid them, but it is becoming difficult to project just who that someone might be.  Is there a "mystery team" that will sneak up on Scherzer?
As strange as it sounds, would Toronto go all in on him, given that they've just staked their claim as the AL East top dog after getting Donaldson?
They've done it before...

Jack Curry of YES on Twitter:

Yankees haven't offered Max Scherzer a 6-year deal. That report is inaccurate.

I have no insider information, but looking around the league for teams that could potentially pay the kind of cash Scherzer is going to want, the list is not that long.
Given that the Yankees have been burned on long term pitching contracts in the near past, and are still on the hook for onerous contracts like Texeira and ARod, it would be a surprise if the Yankees are willing to be the top bidder.  Still, with that franchise, ANYTHING is possible, so you can't rule it out.

I'm not sure. If I am the Yankees, I might rather sign Headley, McCarthy, and Aoki than spent that money on Scherzer. While exploring a trade for a SS of course.

I don't disagree that the Yankees would be better served signing the guys you mention for shorter term contracts, but the Yankees are a big ticket franchise, and they know that star power sells.  They've never shied away from going after the biggest names in free agency, and their fan base is going to be more energized (and perhaps might actually buy some of those tickets behind home plate) with someone of Scherzer's talent level on the mound.  Guys like Headley, McCarthy, Aoki don't move the needle in NY enough to matter much, even if they prove to be worth about as much as Scherzer might.  That's not how they think in NY.

Scherzer to the Yankees is very interesting. On one hand, it is the type of signing the Yankees tend to make. They are in a big market and want big names. On the other hand, they need an entire left side of the IF and bullpen help. The biggest issue isn't even the 2015 payroll. The issue is that after 2015, they have no money coming off the books. 2016 payroll could be out of control, even by Yankee's standards.

All the threads where this would fit on the main board are locked. So I guess I have to post it here

“@jonmorosi: Trade talks intensified around MLB in last 48 hours, one GM told me tonight. Tender deadline Tues., winter meetings next week. Stay tuned.”
