KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- The Royals have had preliminary discussions with the agents for free-agent left-hander Jon Lester, according to sources close to the situation.
Also, a representative from ACES Baseball Agency, which represents Lester, was believed to have been in Kansas City on Wednesday night.
But a source close to the situation cautioned, "I don't know how much I would read into that."

Are we really shocked that the MFY might go after Scherzer? Isn't this the MO every winter? Start off by saying they aren't going to spend big, then blow away a couple of the top FA with offers above and beyond what anyone else was offering. I will not be shocked at all if the MFY re-sign Headley, re-sign Robertson, re-sign Kuroda or McCarthy, and sign Scherzer.

I feel shocked.  Who would've ever guessed this, besides every non-Yankee fan on this board?

There is no chance the Yankees are actually going after Scherzer on a nine figure deal. Even Jon Heyman, who might as well be a Boras employee, has zero smoke behind that attempted fire. Come on, people. If NY was going to go after a premium SP hard, of course it would be Lester. I posted that piece to laugh at, not to take seriously.

When you've got a straight man like Cashman setting you up over the years ("it's not us"), don't be surprised if the humor gets lost.

"We aren't going after any big name free agents this winter. We spent a lot last winter on Ellsbury, McCann, Tanaka, and Beltran. Trust me...all that we are going to do is try to re-sign Headley, re-sign McCarthy, re-sign Kuroda if he doesn't retire or go back to Japan, and re-sign Robertson. Maybe we will make a play for Lester or Scherzer if Kuroda doesn't return, but we ARE NOT going to be a major player in free agency." OK, I may have paraphrased a little, but Brian Cashman doesn't lie. Other than signing 4 or 5 of the biggest names out there, they will not be major players this year.

I'm puzzled. One of the A's great strengths for two years now has been versatility and platooning. Now they pay top dollar for a guy who can't really play defense, meaning their DH spot is occupied and their lineup versatility takes a hit.

Yeah, but he just looks like an A.

The Mets and Yankees better move fast on Drew before they compete with the Dodgers, Angels and Cardinals for his services over the next 5 years.

Fascinating story to watch will be the Tigers and Scherzer, and if they make that signing, do they flip Price for prospects (or MLB ready talent, say, a CF?). If Price and Hamels are both on the board, Hamels price may go down too. Lots of dominos could fall quickly.

I'm torn. At one side I think 'this was just enough to not get it done' but at the same time, I also see this as a good jumping off point for Lester to start negotiations that end at around 6/132 or so.

I lean more toward the former, unfortunately.

Tons of conflicting reports as to whether Panda has received an offer from the Sox. Heard earlier he was 90% to signing w the Sox and the a Giants were out. Now hearing Giants are in and Sox haven't formalized an offer. And now the Jays are making an offer. Today has been weird.

Bradford reporting that the Sox are willing to negotiate after initial offer, which was described as complex. Sounds like it's much much more than meets the eye. Here's hoping.

Yes, the sox will get a cost controlled starting pitcher and Jay bruce for only at least our top 5 prospects and pedroia.
What possible scenario do you think it would take to accomplish that?  And who do you think the sox would be willing to let go?
But yea, the sox will totally buy low and get a top of the rotation pitcher and Jay bruce for a bag of balls.

I beg to differ .. It's one year of Cueto and two years of Bruce .. What's more

Fan graphs has Cueto's 2014 valued at 23m (4.1 WAR) and Bruce at 6m -1.1 WAR)

Cueto makes 12m and Bruce is around 12m as well .. So Cueto has about 10m in value and Bruce is worth - 6m or thereabouts . Combined they are worth roughly 4m .. add in another -1 WAR year for Bruce and they are a net negative. And you think that would cost 5 prospects AND Pedroia ? The likes of Owens or Betts are worth at least 30m each. Betts is upwards to 50m.

(All figures from memory .. I'm not trying to make exact calculations .. Just pointing out the huge discrepancies in value)

Edit : Cueto makes 10m

1) How is Cueto only worth 10m in value and 2) Do you honestly expect Bruce to have negative value the next two years? Bruce is signed to a reasonable contract, had a .269 BABIP in 2014, and puts up big power numbers when healthy. Some team will trade prospects for him and I don't think it benefits the Reds to package he and Cueto together.

I'm talking marginal value here .. A players contract compared to is worth on the field.

Cueto's contract is 10m .. His career year netted about 23m in value .. So his "net worth" is around 13m for one year .. Assuming he repeats that career year.

Bruce seems to alternate very good with very bad. He was awful last year .. If the Reds played a replacement level player in RF last year they would have been better off. He's Allan Craig.

So why would you trade prime prospects - who are worth a fortune due to their potential of delivering star level performance for league minimum - for the strong likelihood of 5 or 6 WAR at a maximum?
