Or maybe they just want Baez to go back to AAA and work on not striking out in 40% of his plate appearances.
Doubtful. Baez has shown a steady pattern at every level, literally every level between low A and AAA, of striking out a lot (typically 30-35%+) before he adjusts and cuts that number down to a more reasonable level.. Sending him back to AAA would do no good; he needs to adjust to MLB pitching.

I just think they can trade Castro because Russell is that good. The MFY know they need a young stud SS Castro fits the bill. If they offer up C prospect Gary Sanchez with LHP's  Banuelos and Clarkin the Cubs might do it. It would solve their need for young C and add two arms to their arsenal.
The MFY will not trade Severino or Lindgren. They have a huge hole at SS. I would love Castro here and Bogie at 3B, we would be set for years at both positions.

Castro has a ridiculously team friendly deal for 7 years 60 million that expires in 2019 when he turns 29.  He's a bit of a maddeningly inconsistent hitter but an above average defender. They could get a ton for him and yes, I agree the Mets are a perfect target due to Flores' big fail.

Jed Hoyer on the La Stella trade:

“This wasn’t a precursor to anything,” Hoyer stated. “Sometimes you have to acquire guys that can get on-base. It’s something we needed.”

Obviously this is a GM making a public statement so take it with a pinch of salt. But it does fit with the Cubs' recent pattern of focusing almost exclusively on young, toolsy hitters regardless of need and shying away from young pitching.

Think it's news. Might have just been a "report". Russell Martin going back to his home country as the Blue Jays have signed him for 4 years. According to local radio station. At work, can't find any links yet.

Sox claimed Juan Francisco off waivers. Guy absolutely destroys RHP (.504 slg in 2014, .266 ISO).

A platoon of he and Middlebrooks could, I guess, be decent as an absolute last resort. Really hope it doesn't happen like that, though.

Are we sure whether he's a righty or a lefty? Maybe both?

If he makes the majors, he'll be the 3rd Greg Harris to play there.  The same as the number of guys named John Smith to play in the majors.

Ike Davis designated for assignment by the Pittsburgh Pirates.

Davis' star has fallen quite a bit, but he did slug (360/405/765) vs. right handed pitching last year.  He's 2nd year arb. eligible, and a little expensive for a Mike Carp role, but is he worth taking a flyer on, given how right-handed the Sox are?  Does anyone in the "Trade Napoli" contingent think he'd be a serviceable one-year replacement, either by himself or platooning with Craig?

I like to see the ASU ballplayers do well, and I hope he catches on somewhere.

Interesting. I didn't think they were going to compete next season but I guess they're going to make an effort.

It seems like teams are changing their minds about paying everyday designated hitters. So far this offseason we have LaRoche signing with the White Sox to add to the A's signing Butler to a relatively large contract and the Tigers giving VMart an obscene contract. These signings really seem to indicate a reversal of the previous trend towards mixing and matching at DH among AL teams over the last several years.

LaRoche is a great fielder. I don't now how Abreu is in the field but DHing LaRoche is a waste.

I'd assume the two of them will split the two positions, but it's still functionally signing a full-time DH, whether Abreu or LaRoche actually starts at DH.

It always seemed to me that the smarter teams had a full time DH; the trend away from it seemed to be more a matter of finding players willing/ able to "play the position." With offense on the decline I rhin it only makes sense that teams will find a way to add consistent offense any way they can.

Maybe the standing offer should be sweetened to halfsies on a pizza, domestic beer, and a Gmail invite.

edit: I swear I posted this in the "Following former Sox" thread. I don't know how it ended up over here.

I think Davis is a pretty nice pickup by the A's. He needs a team that's willing and able to platoon him, and the A's have been utilizing platoons more than any team in baseball over the past few seasons. Plus the A's have a perfect guy to platoon with him at 1B in Nate Freiman. Davis has shown some serious ability to hit RHP in the past but he's always been hapless against LHP. If they can get him to rediscover his power stroke and platoon him intelligently they probably got a productive 1B bat with a decent glove for basically nothing.

Total. His AAV is higher.
Yeah, but Rusney's deal was really 72.5/6 full years.  The AAV is lowered because they signed him three months earlier and he played 10 games for a last-place team in September.  So the real money is higher for Castillo, which is contrary to what was predicted.

EDIT: I assume if the Red Sox had been up against the cap instead of well under it for 2014 Castillo's deal would have somehow commenced for the 2015 season.

With Cruz signing (or apparently signing) in Seattle, I would guess that they aren't as interested in Cespedes as they might have been.  I thought at one point that a Cespedes/Iwakuma swap made sense in both directions, but this signing might have squashed that as a possible option.  They say they want Cruz to be the DH, meaning that they could still be interested in Cespedes, but they are clearly willing to spend to fill the holes they have, so detracting from a strong rotation to add a bat in a payroll neutral situation might not be as appealing as just going out to sign someone like Hunter or Rios and saving Iwakuma.  I guess we'll see.

MLB TR reporting that both Medlen and Beachy were non tendered. Ben better be on the phone with those agents now. Get those two year show me deals out there since both will be rehabbing for most of 2015.

With some interesting non tender candidates out there who could be SP reclamation projects, I wonder if the Red Sox will try to make at least one such acquisition to backfill the possible bigger ticket signings or trades that are coming soon.  Some of these guys would be thrilled to have a shot to pitch in Boston, and right now, their rotation is wide open-and thus appealing to guys looking for jobs.  Just speculation, but it wouldn't be a surprise to see them try to stash a Beachy or Medlen to come back mid to late 2015, with some kind of vesting team friendly option for 2016 tacked on.

I'm not sure why the Twins want to do this.  Hunter is a guy with declining skills and a poor defensive reputation.  They certainly had an opening in the OF, but the future would appear to be more along the lines of Buxton, Hicks, Arcia, Rosario, Santana.  If Hunter can teach those guys how to be a major leaguer, he's got value.  I guess on a one year deal, it isn't much of a long term investment.

Seems like more of a feel good homecoming since the Twins aren't going anywhere this year and they need to field something. And Torii can be a mentor to that stacked minor league stable about to hit the majors.and smile for the cameras before he retires.

The Blue Jays just non-tendered Smoak. I thought he was supposed be their 1st baseman?
