MLB Game at Fort Bragg

The Braves and Marlins will play a regular season game at a new facility built at Fort Bragg, NC on July 3rd. The game will be the Sunday night game of the week on ESPN. Apparently both MLB and the MLBPA teamed up to build the 12,500 seat stadium and are donating it to the Army after the game. It will eventually serve as a stadium for personnel assigned to Bragg. Very cool. More here:

Do I hate America if I think that there are way more deserving charities for MLB to donate to than the Department of Defense?

Probably, but how many charities are there that promote baseball that MLB isn't already working with?

Also, MLB does a lot of charity stuff. They can do some things that aren't the super most necessary thing in the world.

I drove by the site today. They have just broken ground. The seating is only supposed to be a temporary structure, but there is so much work to be done. The site is on what was Willow Lakes Golf Course, which closed in 2009 as Pope AFB was taken over by Fort Bragg. Leveling the area to put in a ball field is one thing. Putting in a ball field to MLB standards that major leaguers will want to play on is another matter. Grass does not grow well around here due to the heat and very sandy soil. I will say my concerns are negatively impacted by my experiences playing golf at Willow Lakes. Pope AFB let the course fall into disrepair in the last few years before it closed, and the greens played more like a lunar surface than a bent grass surface. Still, I think this is a tall order to have this ready by July 3.

Maybe the game was never put on sale to the general public. If that's the case then they just have to refund STH for the game, not a huge deal.

As for the grass, it's kind of like "growing" grass in March at Fenway.

I drove by the site yesterday. No physical structures are up yet. The trees have all been cleared, and what was once an undulating weed fest is now a flat plane of dirt. They have leveled the playing field.

Game day at Fort Bragg. They've done some amazing work the last few weeks. Forecast is for thunderstorms in the area right up until game time.

I hope the Marlins guy is behind home plate

“@Marlins_Man: @darrenrovell I am NOT there. Told DOD members ONLY. Honored to not go and give up seat to DOD. If civilians could go I would have.”

This is really a very cool thing happening for these families. As a Navy Brat I can totally appreciate the excitement for everyone involved? Really enjoyed all the fun stories about the construction of the field and all the human interest stories. Good stuff.

Agreed, this has been a fun event to watch.

Kudos to MLB for discovering what I'm sure is going to be a regular "Summer Classic" in the future. Just don't overdo it and choose the future sites wisely.

They want to play a game for people who don't get to see major league baseball.

Might I suggest ... Minnesota

I was being positive about MM, it was a contrast between the two

And honestly. I think Marlins man gets a bad rap. All of us here are die hard sports fans (of at least one sport). If we had the amount of disposable income that MM has I think many of us would do the same thing (of course we may not wear a bright colored jersey) but we would try and be at every high profile sporting event we could get a ticket for.

I spoke to him for about 10 minutes last Christmas Eve at the Oakland Coliseum. He came off as a really good dude who is both very good to his "fans" and completely cognizant of how silly it is that he gets to live this life and has fans.
