Woof, so much for setting on contracts, even when it comes to middling talent.

As if they really needed to be debunked, this should assauge anyone's collusion fears. Was 40th in MLB in xwOBACON but that's all I can say remotely positive about this. Oh, and the opt out helps the team, can't forget that one. ;)

18 million AAV for a player who has much of his peak ahead of him after a 4 bWAR season in an extreme hitters park? Really?

He is 28, how does he have "much of his peak ahead of him"? Also, this is basically a 5/105 deal the way it's structured, with 3/39 added for years 6-8 if he doesn't opt out, which presumably he will since at 33, he should have a good decade left of his peak. :)

This gem from Dave Cameron in December, who now works for the Padres:

'Matt Adams got 1/$4M to be a backup. Eric Hosmer is probably getting $100M+. So I’ll just share these career numbers and walk away.'

You could take that one step further (stats reposted from Twitter and not doublechecked):

Eric Hosmer - age 28 - 111 career OPS+
Wil Myers - age 27 - 110 career OPS+ (Hosmer will replace Myers at 1B for SD)
C.J. Cron - age 28 - 108 career OPS+
Corey Dickerson - Age 28 - 119 career OPS+

Obviously defense matters too, but good luck with that contract, SD.

There’s something very beautiful about A.J. Preller.
I was wondering where all the stupid in free agency went this winter. Good ol' Preller for the off-season save.

Given the surrounding market landscape this is happening in 8 years on a 1B of his caliber is absolutely inexcusable.

Bad day for Rays fans (all 6 of them). They practically gave away 2 years of better than league avg Odorizzi for the Twins' #4 SS prospect. And then cut Dickerson, who's going to end up starting for someone, just to save a few million.

At least the state of FL has the Jaguars.

The market correction isn’t just affecting free agency. The bifurcation into trying and tanking teams has really put a damper on the trade market for good/OK but not great guys like Odorizzi. All the tankers are hoarding prospects, free agent prices are declining and you’re just not going to fleece someone for some high quality prospects for a middle of the road #3/4 starter anymore. Kinda sucks for the Rays, who overperformed for years by taking advantage of other teams’ stupidity.

But Tampa really is a hockey town these days, anyway, eh?

Seems odd that the Rays would shed Longoria, Odorizzi, Dickerson, Beckham and Boxberger but not Archer.

Yeah, I couldn't find the article I read in the first place, best I could do was find a Morosi tweet saying Milwaukee would *probably* reject such a deal. I'm a little surprised either way.

Portland
2 years 7.5 mill.
The guy has averaged over 2.5 bWAR the past 4 years though it is weighted very heavily on defense.

28-30 was always considered a peak for hitters. Maybe not defense or pitching but hitting certainly
Decline from 31-34 is often not drastic for good hitters unless there is a physical issue and he has been a horse playing almost every day for 7 years except in 2014

In 5 years with a new CBA he probably does opt out unless his decline was steep or there is an injury

With the Marlins and the Rays selling players for parts, I'd love to see them both go for broke and get rid of every single decent player on their teams. Archer, Kiermaier, Colome, Prado, Castro, Realmuto all gone*. There's a lot of teams that don't go the full teardown. For once I'd love to see an organization hit the total reset button and field a team with zero name recognition.

None of this half-to-three-quarters-measure bullshit. Just blow it up right.

* And how bad must it suck to be one of those players in the second week of Spring Training already looking forward to the 2018 Offseason. Young kids, veterans hanging on by a thread, are pumped to be in the Major Leagues and potentially having a job. But the guys who remember being on a good team, stocked with decent players ... this must be complete hell for them.

The Rays are, not surprisingly, taking a pretty thoughtful approach to the current market. I actually don’t think they are trying to tank to get higher draft picks or absolutely minimize payroll. They are looking to stock up the farm by looking for opportunities to trade a piece they have for a similar piece plus a prospect. They ditched Souza, brought back 2 prospects and then signed Carlos Gomez at 1yr/4m. They got rid of Dickerson at 6m, brought back a setup guy at 4m (net of 1m subsidy from PIT) plus a prospect and added Cron at 4m (who apparently hit the weight room hard, focused on elevating and is hitting jaw dropping moonshots in spring training BP). I suspect they’ll also be picking up a Morrison/Duda type guy on a 1 yr deal to help replace Dickerson’s and Longo’s bats. The payroll will be low, as always, but not rock bottom. Current market inefficiency is pretty decent free agents out there to be had on one year deals. Lots of flexibility if you have a number of those guys. Stock up on young ML ready arms, add a bunch of high ceiling lower level field player prospects for the future, fill in for the present with free agents on one year deals. If young arms pan out this year, the 2018 team may actually flirt with respectability.

Sucks that it’s sounding like TJ for Honeywell.

For just $6.5M guaranteed, $16.5M over two years if all the triggers are hit. For a 30-year-old who just hit 38 HR.

Carlos Santana's agent is looking more and more like a genius.
If Santana’s agent is a genius, what is Mitch Moreland’s?

Difference between signing mid December and late February. Also Santana has been a more consistent player. Morrison had a great contract year but his previous seasons , aside from his rookie year were not great.

That said, there are some real reasons to believe Morrisons breakout year was no fluke. Definitely should have got more although I guess there are some incentives built in that should make him more if he plays well

.
Chris Carter led the NL in HR and landed a bench job in NY at 3 million a year last year. Signed a minor-league deal this year. Morrison had a better OBP though
