I would think Morrow's 10 to 11 AAV contract would be the highest for a set up guy this winter.
Reed and Shaw may get close though and probably 3-4 years.

With new/different titles in different organizations, it's hard to know who's responsible for what. But Jeter is the CEO (the title Sam Kennedy holds for the Red Sox) which presumably includes a lot of responsibilities outside baseball operations. Michael Hill is the President of Baseball Operations (the title Dave Dombrowski holds for the Red Sox). Jeter's probably going to be more Lucchino than Kennedy in terms of involvement in baseball ops, but it doesn't seem that strange for him not to be at the winter meetings.

Yeah, I don't get that criticism. Mike Hill is over there. Buster Olney has had some kind of weird bias against Jeter-the-owner recently, after years of ball-washing Jeter-the-shortstop-who-could-do-no-wrong.

I don't hate Jeter, but this is a really bad look for him. For a lot of people, he's the face of the Miami Marlins franchise. Perception is that HE sent Stanton to the fucking Yankees of all places for a bag of beans. He should have to face the music on this. Hiding out in Miami or wherever he is, is not good optics.

What was the one thing that all reporters bent over backwards telling us about Derek Jeter when he was a player? They always lauded his accountability. He's not doing that here. I mean, if he had a ten-minute briefing in one of the hotel lobbies, 90% of the baseball press would be eating out his hand, writing puff pieces on how "This was a hard decision for the former captain, but he wants to put his stamp on the new franchise. And doing that means purging salary. Blah, blah, blah."

I mean, I know of one guy at the Boston Globe who would write that lede in five seconds (Wilber still might).

Meh. When the Celtics make a big trade I want to hear from Ainge, not Grousbeck. I get the reasons why this is different, but maybe that's all the more reason to lay low. The baseball guys run the show, they don't need his shadow hanging over every move.

Per MLBTR:

The Twins have announced a two-year deal with righty Michael Pineda. The former Yankees righty is still working back from Tommy John surgery. He receives a $10MM guarantee, split into consecutive $2MM and $8MM salaries.

Nice gamble for the Twins looking at 2019.

I don't understand what role the Marlins have as a franchise. Just contract them.

Wow. Cannot wait to see that return.
Sandy Alcantara (whose career Minor League ERA of nearly 4.00 the Marlins apparently craved), Magneuris Sierra (I mean I guess he could be an asset if his steals translate) and two minor leaguers according to St Louis Post Dispatch.

I mean.... the Nationals might win 36 of their 19 games against the Marlins this year. My slow pitch softball team might be able to beat them at this point. Jeter is a clown show, and that's taking into account that Alacantara was the BP #40 prospect this past season.

Carlos Santana to the Phillies for 3/60.

Are the Indians taking a small step back? They've lost guys like Santana and Shaw already, I wonder who they have to step into those spots.

Cozart to the Angels for 3/38, they are putting together a nice defensive team but the pitching staff is still a mess behind Ohtani.

The JBJ of shortstops.
He could be one of the crappiest hitters in baseball and still earn that contract because of his defense.
That's a nice deal.

Hopefully the defense tranfers to third ... where they'll play him.

It's certainly a step back offensively, but they're not going to lose any sleep from Shaw leaving. The loss of Santana is the worst news of the off-season for me, and hopefully this means they'll make a serious offer to Jay Bruce or one of the first baseman on the market who aren't just coming off a surprising career year. It sounded like Santana preferred to stay, but $20M per just wasn't something they were prepared to match. The writing was kind of on the wall last winter when they had to consider replacing at least one of Napoli and Santana over two off-seasons and responded by splurging on Encarnacion.

Cleveland had the deepest bullpen in the majors though, and Shaw's strength wasn't so much that he's a great reliever, but that he's been able to make a ton of appearances the past several years. All that mileage on his arm is also the best reason to let him walk. Not re-signing Joe Smith after reacquiring him last summer will hurt more than Shaw. They'll have everyone else back though, and be better off with Nick Goody taking on higher priority innings. They've also had a knack for bringing in 2-3 NRI's every spring and getting a good season out of one of them.

Thanks, that's helpful.

Jay Bruce is supposedly why SF moved Moore to shed payroll, but we'll see now that the FA dominos are finally starting to fall.

I understand that the Giants are "trying to compete", I just don't think it makes any sense for them to go after JD Martinez. They will not e good next year, probably not the year after that either, so why waste the great years of that contract, over paying a DH to play LF? Stanton is a different beast completely.

Matt Moore also blew last year - the highest ERA of any starter in baseball pitching half his games in SF. Surprised he was tradeable. Addition by subtraction.

For those who want to pass on JD who might get 25-30 in order to get Harper or Machado next year, I’d be careful what you wish for. $175m commitment over 6 years is a much easier pill to swallow than $375 over 10. Im worried the JD signing might increase the price tag on those guys even more.

I don’t think the Sox have any shot at Machado or Harper, but for both I’d rather spend the premium on a better player who is five years younger, defensively competent and doesn’t have skills hat will age poorly. I’m a lot more confident that a 36 year old BH or MM will be more productive at that age than JDM will be. That being said, I’d want no part of any of those hypothetical deals.
