I don't hate Jeter, but this is a really bad look for him. For a lot of people, he's the face of the Miami Marlins franchise. Perception is that HE sent Stanton to the fucking Yankees of all places for a bag of beans. He should have to face the music on this. Hiding out in Miami or wherever he is, is not good optics.
What was the one thing that all reporters bent over backwards telling us about Derek Jeter when he was a player? They always lauded his accountability. He's not doing that here. I mean, if he had a ten-minute briefing in one of the hotel lobbies, 90% of the baseball press would be eating out his hand, writing puff pieces on how "This was a hard decision for the former captain, but he wants to put his stamp on the new franchise. And doing that means purging salary. Blah, blah, blah."
I mean, I know of one guy at the Boston Globe who would write that lede in five seconds (Wilber still might).
