Last year I sent a picture of my friar friend throwing out the first pitch at a Drive game. He was in his full friar regalia, down to the sandals. Fr. Pat will be back again on the 11th, with St. Anthony's, the school he supports. The work he has done with them is beyond incredible.

I won't be able to be there for it, but if anyone is, pictures would be appreciated. I'll also steal photos from his facebook feed.

Ball looked good today, other than a 3-run second where he lost command out of the stretch.

FB sat at 90 on the Hadlock gun, slider was a decent out pitch and his change-up fooled a couple of people.

I thought he was tipping the change, in that you saw way more of the ball coming out of his hand, and he did give up a long homer on it, so that might be something he needs to work on.

Like that he settled down after the second, though, and that he induced quite a few grounders - 2 for double plays.

For the hitters, Cole Sturgeon has a great swing from the left side and had a couple hits, and a kid named Danny Mars, hitting 9th had a paired of nicely placed singles through the infield with a choked up bat, then put one over the monster in the 8th to tie the game.

Fun day. 11-10 win.

I'm guessing Aneury Tavarez isn't long for Portland after his season last year and his torrid start this year. 3/5 today.

Dalbec was 3/4 with 2 doubles

This after he gave up five runs in the first, came out for the 2nd anyway, and spiked a 45-foot fastball into the ground.

"Major lg source says Jason Groome left his Single A Greenville debut w/a lat injury. If so, that'd clearly be better than many alternatives."

Salem's pitcher had to bat in yesterday's game. Per MILB.com it was due to a "lineup mistake". Per Cuz, it was due to some lineup manipulation after the game was underway.

Either way, you'd think that could be avoided. Or Joe Oliver (mgr) has some 'splainin' to do.

Cuz's column also tells us that our #1 minor league starter (Kyle Kendrick) gave up 10 runs for the Pawsox yesterday. oh oh.

Anyone have any sleeper prospects they follow?
Mitchell Osnowitz, a 6-5 righty from Illinois who has a high 90s fastball and is pitching for Salem. My son caught his bullpens last fall and summer as he worked with a scout/coach on a second and third pitch. He was drafted a few years ago by the Rockies as a third baseman. They converted him to a pitcher, but that didn't work out, so he took a year off to regroup and work on a change-up and curve. He's old for single-A, 25, but I love these "never give up the dream" stories.

BA prospect report mentions Ock

"Josh Ockimey, 1b, Red Sox. Boston’s No. 10 prospect is coming off a season in which he hit just .226 in his first year of full-season ball, especially struggling in the second half (.152/.291/.313). Ockimey is doing his best to make sure that doesn’t happen again. The Philadelphia prep star had four hits Tuesday in high Class A Salem’s win over Lynchburg (Indians) and is 12-for-23 to start the season." In 395 AAA at bats last year, Rusney Castillo hit 2 HRs. With last night's HR, he is already at 2 in 29 at bats. His ISO in ST was .158 in 40 PA. All SSS, but nice to see him hitting for more power to start the year. Still not walking at all though.

Darwinzon Hernandez line yesterday: 4ip, 5h, 1 er, 1bb, 8k. His first start: 5ip, 3h, 1er, 2bb, 7k.

15k/3bb in 9ip to date. Nice to see from the 20 year old lefty. He has a nice pitch combination. His ceiling isn't so high right now but his fastball velocity has been improving with maturity so that could change.

2016 3rd round pick Shaun Anderson is off to a decent start too, but should be expected given he is 22 and in Greenville. 10.2ip, 13k/2bb and a 0.94 whip.

Our return for Clay Buchholz is off to a great start too but he's 24 and in Salem. .400/.486/.567 in his first 30 at bats with 5bb/5k.

2015 3rd round pick Austin Rei is at .333/.407/.542 after 26 PA in Salem. He's struggled his first 2 years and at age 23, this is his make or break year.

Someone already mentioned Travis Lakins but he's looked amazing this year as well. 11.1ip, 17k/1bb and a 0.88 WHIP. One of the prospect gurus was pretty high on Lakins, having him as our 5th or 6th best prospect. I think it was Law.

Jake Cosart's first 2 games in Portland: 0.1ip, 0h, 2er, 4bb/0k and Game 2: 2.0ip, 1h, 3bb/4k. I'm guessing he's going to need a month or two to adjust and stop walking the ballpark.

Brian Johnson went 6.2ip 4h, 1 er, 8k/1bb today in a game that is currently tied 1-1 in the bottom of the 9th. Rusney Castillo went 2-4. Workman pitched 2.1 innings of no hit ball striking out 4 and walking 1.
Rusney is now at .303/.324/.515 in 34 PA.

...And just like that Pawtucket wins in the bottom of the 9th on a Devin Marrero hit.

It would be nice if Workman could make it back, I wonder what his stuff looks like.

My sleeper prospect for this year is - or I should say will be - Trey Ball, RIGHTFIELDER! I'd give him a half year pitching, and if he's still not missing bats and walking too many, make the switch to outfield

Travis is back today but Swihart is out. Swihart left the game early yesterday due to some sort of issue with his finger, I assume his absence today is related to that.

I wonder if they'll try him at reliever first, to see how his stuff plays in short stints.

Lakins on his way to his 3rd straight solid outting. Currently at 5ip, 5h, 2er, 2bb/4k, 1 hr.

Shaun Anderson continues his decent start as well. 5ip, 3h, 1er, 3bb/6k. For the year he's now at 15.2ip, 11h, 2er, 19k/5bb 1.15 era

Yoan Moncada hit HR number 3 vs Pawtucket today. Castillo went 2-4 and is to .318/.333/.477 in 46 PA.
Devers went 2-3 and is at .375/.390/.550.
Michael Chavis hit his first HR of the year in his 2nd game back from missing a bunch of games after the opener.
Bobby Dalbec hit his first HR of the year as well. Now up to .318/.424/.455 in 52 PA. 7bb/17k so the strikeouts could be an issue. Nice to see him walking though.

Henry Owens night is over. 4.2ip, 4h, 2er, 4bb, 8k, and the HR allowed to Moncada.

Moncada so far on the night is 2/3 with the HR, a SB and a K.

Tate Matheny .448/.485/.655 and Austin Rei .345/.425/.629 are having good seasons so far too. Rei was the 3rd round pick in 2015, Matheny the 4th. They are both 23 so not exactly young for A+ ball.

Very nice to see the starts by Rei, Chavis, and Ockimey giving hope of filling in the top 10 list with actual prospects. And Ben Taylor making the team out of spring training also is a good reminder that the cupboard was not left bare by the Margot, Moncada, and Doubon headliner trades.

Jalen Beeks with a CGSO, sorta. 7ip, 5h, 2bb, 7k. 94 pitches, 63 for strikes. He's been striking a lot of guys out so far this year. 22k/7bb in 15.2 innings.

Trey Ball went 4.1ip, 5h, 5er, 4bb, 3k, 1HRA today. Puts his season at 3 starts 15.2ip, 15k/8bb and an era of 5.74.
