Maybe I'm overly sensitive to the MMA/gay thing.  I've been a hard core fan of the sport for well over 10 years and I've heard that crap so many times from boxing fans.  Here is the link:

http://www.sportsgrid.com/ncaa-basketball/college-basketball-writer-seth-davis-is-sorry-for-calling-mma-homoerotic/

Sherdog also quoted him from an interview years ago saying (paraphrasing) "Is it really macho if two half naked men are hugging each other?" or something stupid like that.  I couldn't find the quote and I've been searching for 15 minutes...maybe I'm confusing that quote with somebody else but I could have sworn it was from Davis.  Fwiw, Davis constantly calls out Belichick for being "classless"....so maybe that makes me even more biased.

As far as Dennis, I feel dirty for even defending him an ounce.  I take my earlier post back.

To be clear Jack, Seth Davis is obviously a moron. And I totally understand why it touches a nerve for a fan of MMA.

As for D&C...this couldn't get any worse. Minihan is the one to slip up? Goddamit.

If he even gets suspended, it'll be one week, tops.  I hope I'm wrong and he gets canned.  Seeing that D & C still have jobs after the Metco comments, there's no way Minihane gets the boot for this.

He'll be fine. Its nothing worse than Felger calling people douches.

“What a bitch. I hate her. What a gutless bitch,” Minihane said. “Seriously, go away. Drop dead. What the hell is wrong with her? First of all, follow up. Secondly, the guy admitted he did it. He admitted it. He told reporters he threw a couple of pipe bombs. How is that social media’s fault? I hate her. I seriously hate her so much. Social media is the reason she has a big house! Shut up. Shut up. I shouldn’t call her a bitch, I’m sure she’s a nice person.”

Out here in  LA they were talking about her yesterday BEFORE the game.  The topic was her taking over for Pam Oliver on the Fox  #1 football crew. A couple of people have worked with her and understand why she is the #1 sideline reporter but all said she got it for one obvious reason only. To a person they said she wass lazy, had no depth reporting wise and when she came over to Fox, she wanted the NFL gig from the beginning. She pouted about the studio show on college football and Pam Oliver confided in colleagues that she knew she was done...only a matter of time.

So, her questions were not hard hitting and she was playing chummy with the player in a mid-game interview.  She must be a sideline reporter, because that's pretty much the exact job description.

Honestly, has a sideline reporter EVER grilled a coach or player midgame?  They exist for puff pieces and two second cliche sound bites.  Maybe an injury update if they're particularly hard hitting.

If he hates the role of sideline reporter, fine.  Lots of people do.  But to call her a bitch because she's doing her job, probably exactly the way her bosses want her to judging by her ascent up the ladder, is just misogynist bullshit.

How about I call Minihane a stupid dipshit because he's on the radio and he doesn't even play any music?  Who cares if that's not his job because the format doesn't require it, that's apparently irrelevant.  Radio hosts play music, I want music on the radio, so he is therefore a stupid incompetent dipshit.  The logic is flawless.

When Kirk went with the ol', "the only reason she has a job is because she has long legs, big boobs, and a pretty face' (paraphrasing) comment, I thought for sure he would bring up the peeping tom video.  Her career took off even more after that happened.

I'm sure he was spoken to about this, but I doubt he'll get suspended.

This is the most press WEEI has received in about a decade, no way is he suspended.

Not to defend Minihane here (although that's exactly what I'm about to do), but he seemed to realize he went overboard on Andrews pretty quickly when he said, "I shouldn't say that, I'm sure she's a nice person."

Although calling her a "gutless bitch" who should "drop dead" was clearly over the line, I didn't find Minihane's comments any more offensive than those he made about Harold Reynolds on the same broadcast. I'd also have a hard time refuting his characterization of Andrews as just another "sideline bimbo". I actually recall Minihane telling Alexei Lalas to go die in a fire (or something of that nature, among numerous other derogatory insults) during one of the show's endless rants against the World Cup, yet there wasn't anything close the mass outrage from the media you're seeing now.

I think Minihane was out of line and low class, but his comments don't nearly justify the over the top backlash out there - front page of the NY Post and Boston.com? Really? I know this is probably the slowest news week of the year, but come on.

Minihane's upcoming vacation now seems perfectly timed and I bet this blows over in a week. Not expecting a suspension, but wouldn't be surprised if he's forced to issue some half-hearted public apology once he's back, if not before then.

EDIT: Added tabloid front page screenshots. Minihane's comments apparently out-offending Chelsea Handler's "'tastless' Hitler parody" according to NY Daily News' story placement - #HotSportzTake #EmbraceDebate.

His word choice is what justify the backlash. Calling someone a gutless bitch because of an interview during an exhibition game where her director probably told her where to steer the conversation is over the line.

Toucher had nearly the same take, but he called her a dummy. Word choice is important.

Even calling her gutless might have been not punishment worthy (and in keeping with the useless stupidity that is WEEI).  But "bitch" carries with it the unmistakable aroma of "he's criticizing her *because* she's a woman,"  which should not be acceptable, no matter how many high-fives it generated around the EEI water cooler.

I suppose we can hope aginst hope that if nothing happens to Minihane, that D & C will be emboldened to release their inner George Wallaces.

(That said, what was "gutless" about it?)

Fred's take was this whole thing is dumb and his apology was not Needed and all this apologizing is the downfall of society wasn't it?

I listened to most of the show and what I heard Andrews was only a footnote.

Would be interested in seeing this topic discussed at the next gubernatorial debate: "The first question goes to you, Attorney General Coakley. Erin Andrews - legitimate sports journalist, or just another sideline bimbo? You have one minute, please."

Of the many things wrong with this, I hate the growing trend in sports radio to shit on other media members.  It's just not interesting.  I don't listen to sports radio to hear that Alexi Lalas or Erin Andrews are bad at their jobs.

That was his main point, but he was also criticizing Andrews a bit, and to a greater extent her bosses, for going back and asking about it, forcing the apology if you will.

I was just making the point that you can call someone a dummy and it actually comes across as more genuine and intelligent than calling someone a gutless bitch.

Fox Sports PR just issued a statement on the comments made by WEEI this morning about Erin Andrews and her interview with Cardinals pitcher Adam Wainwright:

"Comments such as these are beyond inappropriate and inexcusable. It is unfortunate that one of the best sports talk radio stations in the country would allow and condone such low-class behavior from one of their on-air personalities."

Press release from WEEI. No suspension yet.

Kirk Minihane issues apology for Erin Andrews comments

Submitted by WEEI on Wed, 07/16/2014 - 7:55pm

Kirk Minihane has issued the following statement regarding comments he made about Erin Andrews on Wednesday morning.

"This morning on the radio I used a series of words to describe Erin Andrews' work at the All-Star Game. My choice of words was wrong; I was wrong to have used them. To all whom I offended -- particularly Ms. Andrews -- I apologize. There is no place for what was said. It was immature and completely uncalled for. I am often critical of media members and their work and recognize here that I've made the kind of mistake I would call out if it was done by another sportscaster or writer. Again, to all involved, I'm very sorry."

What a lame and pathetic company. Minihane's a worthless sack of shit.

"To all whom I've offended..." Worst kind of apology ever. Minihane was very good when he was arguing with fatty and the forehead. But at some point, he became one of them. This show can't end soon enough.

Qualifying an apology is a great definition of "gutless". If you're sincelery apologizing, you believe you were straight wrong. If you believe you were wrong, you are targeting your apology to everybody, not just the segment of people who might have been offended. Even people who agree with your initial wrongheadedness need to hear that you believe you were wrong. That's part of what makes apologizing hard.

Real apologies go like this: "I'm sorry. I was wrong. I hope you'll give me the chance to do better."

This threads loves piling on, damn the facts. He says he was wrong. He apologizes to her. Saying he apologizes " to all I've offended". that acknowledges offense - particularly to ms Andrews - and is not the typical conditional like saying "if I offended anyone." He called her a bitch and then caught himself as going too far with that word. He's now apologized. It wasn't sexist- it was vernacular like prick, douche, idiot that all of am radio has regrettably become. But let's not blow this into something more just because we hate the messengers.

Can't wait for all the people felger calls a douche to call him sexist.

I'm a liberal, and find them simplistic and agenda driven. (Today they complained that a doctor lauded Jeter for inspiring patients, when they have spent the last 6 years killing Manny for not helping Jimmy Fund/visiting Walter Reed.). But get serious about this apology, which seems sincere.

Wait... "Bitch" isn't a sexist word? Are you that stupid?

Don't get me wrong, I use it with regularity and without shame or apology in my daily vernacular, targeting recipients without regard for their gender or intelligence. But I have no illusions about the word. When used to describe a woman, it's absolutely and irrefutably sexist.

And if you don't think the Entercom lawyers and execs reviewed (and likely ordered) that "apology", you're pretty gullible. MInihane had nothing whatsoever to do with the word choice, and that's why the company (and not just him) is a piece of shit.

I wouldn't be surprised. Guess what Chad Finn reported just last week?

For the seventh straight three-month ratings period, 98.5 The Sports Hub finished as the top-rated station in Boston according to Nielsen Audio data.

The Sports Hub earned a 7.9 share in the men 25-54 demographic for the spring period of March 27-June 18, edging classic rock station WZLX (7.8), which like the Sports Hub is owned by CBS Radio.

WEEI (93.7) tied for fifth with fellow Entercom-owned station WAAF with a 5.6 share.

The Sports Hub's numbers are down from the winter (9.3 share) and last spring (10.2). Last spring's ratings were bolstered even more by the Bruins' run to the Stanley Cup Final. The Sports Hub is the flagship station of the Bruins, who lost in the Eastern Conference semifinals this year.

WEEI, the radio home of the Red Sox, saw its ratings tick upward from a 4.6 in the winter and a 5.5 last spring.

In morning drive (6-10 a.m), The Sports Hub's "Toucher and Rich'' program was first for the eighth straight three-month period with a 10.0. T&R had a 11.1 in the winter and a massive 13.4 last spring during the Bruins' run.

WEEI's "Dennis and Callahan" program was second for the third straight period, earning a strong 8.2. That was a significant improvement over last spring's 6.0 share for the show, which also features Kirk Minihane. D&C had a 7.1 in the winter.

For midday (10 a.m.-2 p.m.), the Sports Hub's "Gresh and Zo" program finished fourth (6.2), down from a second-place 8.9 in the winter. WEEI's midday programming -- which was revamped with the late-May reassignment of Mike Mutnansky and the hiring of Christian Fauria and Tim Benz to join holdover Lou Merloni -- finished eighth with a 4.5, up from its 3.5 share in the winter.

In afternoon drive (2-6 p.m.), "Felger and Massarotti" was first for the eighth straight ratings period with a 10.0 share. WEEI's "Dale and Holley" program, in its first full three-month period since Dale Arnold and Michael Holley were reunited in March, was third with a 5.8. WEEI was fifth with a 5.4 in the time slot during the winter.
From 6-7 p.m., The Sports Hub's "Baseball Reporters" program hosted by Tony Massarotti was first with an 8.6 share. In the same window, WEEI was tied for fifth (5.2).

In the 7 p.m.-midnight period, The Sports Hub was first with a 9.1 share. "The Adam Jones Show" and Bruins games aired in that day part. WEEI's "Planet Mikey Show" was tied for 11th (3.9). WEEI, which features Red Sox broadcasts and the Planet Mikey Show, was third with a 7.4.

So when he calls someone a dick, he's also anti-male? Or is this all just crude word that doesn't belie anything more than misguided "edginess"

You're going to be waiting for a very long time. About a year and a half ago -- maybe longer than that now -- Felger opened a show be declaring that they wouldn't be using that kind of language anymore. No more DB references, no more "Seidenberg in my pants" references, no more "Naughty Mazz" segments between 2-6. You know why? Because they recognized -- or were told -- that it was offensive language and they self-corrected.

And if you really think calling a man a "dick" and calling a woman a "gutless bitch" are equal -- therefore the latter is non-offensive -- I don't know what else there is to say.

I agree that the apology is sincere (and it was definitely reviewed by the lawyers)

Nothing anyone is going to say is going to convince you that calling a woman a bitch for doing her job aggressively is some combination of misogyny and sexism.  The way he used it, it most definitely is. It is not the same as calling a woman an idiot. Can I aritculately explain why? Probably not as well as a woman could.

It's simple...if he were using "bitch" as just the female form of dick or asshole, the statement wouldn't make any sense.  She wasn't being pushy or bossy.  He paired it with "gutless".  It was strictly tacked on because she's a woman.

During the Bruins/Canadiens series, Felger also went off on Jack in Rhode Island for being a "puss" because he called in after the Bruins won Game 4 and was nowhere to be heard from after the Bruins had lost Game 3.

Fro my understanding, Felger and Mazz were told to lay off the dick references and innuendo.  I doubt it was their own decision.

First, just to be clear, I don't condone Minihane calling Andrews a bitch and acknowledge the word has sexist overtones when used in certain context. However, I'm not sure he was being as intentionally misogynist as is being portrayed.

Andrews' questions were softballs ("gutless" is a little strong), which makes them no different than 99% of other sideline reporters' questions, and I found the throwaway comments following her interview with Wainwright--“Well, we appreciate you clearing that up. Don’t you love social media?”--to be a little snide and smarmy for my tastes, and I'd have felt the same way had it been Rosenthal or any other reporter. Although I wouldn't choose describe them this way, I could see how someone might even perceive her comments as being a bit "bitchy", without any sexist intent.

Where Minihane obviously goes over the line is labeling the person asking "gutless" questions and making "bitchy" comments as a "gutless bitch" herself, which can't be justified. Throw in the faux vitriol typical of talk radio and it's easy to understand why people are offended, but I think the national finger-wagging is a tad overdone at this point.

I can't defend him on the "drop dead" comment, other than say it's consistent with similar tongue-in-cheek remarks he's made in reference to male media members (not saying that's acceptable either).

Can we also understand that Wainwright grooving a pitch to Jeter is about the stupidest faux controversy ever, and that getting so vitriolic over such a non story probably indicates intent to insult rather than criticism that got out of hand?

What I'm saying is that the rant was a misogynist rant against Erin Andrews, not an honest criticism of her interview.

Getting vitriolic over non-stories is what talk radio (and the internet) does.  I fine with calling him out for the language, but it's a pretty big leap to say the subject wouldn't have been brought up in the first place if not for her gender.

That's not what I said.  I'm talking about the vitriol directed to her interview.

It was a lame duck shitty interview about a lame duck shitty subject.  I think if Tim Kurkjian or Ken Rosenthal had given it Kirk Minihane wouldn't have said one word about the interview itself.  He would have directed the vitriol where it belongs (such as it is, as stated I don't think there is any real vitriol to be had here), which is to Bud Selig's office for feeling the need to have a cover-up and backtrack on Wainwright's original statement because God forbid we actually have the players saying that they aren't competing 100% in this exhibition game.  Or, just be a typical ass and blame it on Derek Jeter not wanting people to think he got a grooved pitch to hit.  Whatever.  But it wouldn't be a rant against the interviewer.

Minihane also has a history of ranting about Jenny Dell. I don't recall him even mentioning Gary Striewski.  The show is terrible and I don't miss it at all. Yesterday, I heard a promo for Lucchino being on this morning and thought - maybe I'll tune in. And then I thought, I'll read about the interview on SoSH if Lucchino says anything worthwhile.

We're talking about the same thing.  Talk radio shows search under every rock for tiny things to get upset over.  I think a male reporter tossing softballs like that regarding the controversy du'jour would have fit the bill, minus the "bitch" part.

I think this is exactly right, it was like he used this "controversy" as an excuse to bash the hell out of Erin Andrews, and did it in a very ugly gender-specific way.

I think this is exactly right, it was like he used this "controversy" as an excuse to bash the hell out of Erin Andrews, and did it in a very ugly gender-specific way.
This show belongs on a right wing talk radio show on the AM dial. What surprises me is that legitimate guests show up for the show. Why does Tom Brady, Theo, Ben Cherrington, or Larry Lucchino need to be associated with these clowns? I'm sure the Sox people are contractually obligated to call in - but those guys should refuse to appear on the show.

If you delved into the subject (not that it is really worth it), his approach would have been the same if Kurkjian or Rosenthal had softballed the questions. Only, given his on-air persona, he'd have called them gutless pricks, pussies, or other term that would offend.

Digging deeper, he has staked out a position that sideline reporters should act like real reporters:

It's not nearly as serious a job, of course, but it should be taken as seriously. I'm sure Jenny Dell considers herself a reporter (and the "She's not a real reporter" angle is a terrible defense). I'm sure she takes great pride in her work (when reached by phone, Ms. Dell very politely declined to comment for this story, as did Middlebrooks when contacted via direct message on Twitter). And entering a romantic relationship with a player weakens her as a reporter. It is the very definition of conflict of interest.

The original rant originated from their discussion that the women reporters like Andrews, replacing Oliver, is iteslf sexist. They discussed some of the good but less visually appealing female sideline reporters in positive terms. That led to the discussion of her lack of true journalistic questions to Wainright. One could reasonably infer that his complaint about the objectification of womem sideline reporters, of which he considers Andrews example 1A, is actually pro-women's equality. Unfortunately, the words he chose -- and the fact that a lot of people hate his co-hosts -- obscured that message and have led a lot of people, like those here, to jump to the conclusion that he is anti-women.

edit: the offensive part of his discussion/rant was his suggestion that Andrews benefitted from the video of her changing. She was a victim, and even if that increased the public's knowledge of her, it is wrong to suggest that this was a positive in any way.
