Also worth noting that the Giants haven’t won a playoff game in over seven years, made the playoffs only once in that time, and have only finished above .500 twice.

Here are the teams with longer playoff win droughts: Detroit Lions; Cleveland Browns; Oakland Browns; Washington Redskins; Tampa Bay Buccaneers; Detroit Lions; Chicago Bears; Cincinnati Bengals; Buffalo Bills; New York Jets.

They’re not a good franchise right now. The Giantsfan only solace is that the Jets haven’t made serious strides, but that could change if Darnold emerges.

His point was they committed to Eli for the season. Paid him a ton of money.
Last year, they drafted Barkley because they thought they could win with Eli. If they still believe that, and bringing him back seems to indicate it, then they need to surround him with players. His beef was they used their asset that could bring in a playmaker and wasted it on a guy who will now sit behind Eli. So the plan to be competitive with Eli is blown.
The roster now is not good enough to win. This season is gone. Then you figure they play Jones next year and first year guys don’t win. That’s two more seasons down the drain, and then you’ve used up four years of Barkley’s prime before you can compete

The s Giants dont have a plan. Keeping eli they should have used the three first rounders to get impact players who can help win now.
Nobody clapped louder than Francesa after they sent OBJ packing, after paying him, and eating a boatload of dead money in the process . “That’s the way you rebuild” is a tweet I recall.

Giants are not a playmaker away in the NFC East.

Edit. Mike is not stupid. He is often deliberately obtuse and flat out lies on occasion, but he damn well knows the “big game QB” is a shell of his former self and has been for some time. And it bothers him enormously. So he flails about — “they know Eli is a statue and needs protection, they KNOW that!” — and aims his heat seeking missiles at others, with some justification but falling short of full explanation. All the problem children have been dispatched, so now the laser is shined on the front office. It was never really Tom Coughlin’s fault either.

Francesa is (was) somewhat conflicted in his Eli-love, in that Eli was presumably paid to do post-game call-ins for years with Francesa, (ratings are good) and in Mike keeping Eli happy and defending him was in his best interest. Eli apparently will no longer play that role with Francesa, so coverage and candor may shift, from its Eli's team to Oh Danny boy.

Oh, goodness:

NYPost:

The WFAN sports talk show host used a college senior getting shot after a party as a way to question general manager Dave Gettleman, even though all that is known right now is Ballentine, a cornerback from Washburn University, was at the wrong place at the wrong time, and his close friend Dwane Simmons was murdered. What concerned Francesa in this tragedy were the optics.

Deadspin:

Two Washburn University football players were shot outside of a party in Topeka, Kansas early Sunday morning, according to the Topeka PD. Junior defensive back Dwane Simmons was pronounced dead at the scene, while his teammate Corey Ballentine suffered non-life threatening injuries. Hours before the shooting, Ballentine became the first Washburn player in 11 years to be selected in the NFL Draft when the Giants took him in the sixth round.

Naturally, sports radio goon Mike Francesa has triangulated the least sensitive possible angle. He impugned Ballentine’s character, blamed the player for getting shot, and found that the true tragedy here is that people will laugh at the Giants.

He really should have stayed retired. He didn't even need this gig. He won't listen to anyone so this will eventually end badly for him.

I fear an Imus-like exit for him.
Yes, or Jimmy The Greek and Cosell.

His biggest problem is he's the guy who got caught on tape falling asleep and he still refuses to admit it. Without proper guard rails (like a good on air partner or management he respects) it's only a matter of time until he says a bad quiet part out loud and he gets called for it by advertisers and then it all becomes unsustainable.

It's not that he makes mistakes or bad picks. It's not that he refuses to admit mistakes or bad picks. It's that he vehemently DENIES that he made mistakes or made bad picks in the first place. "I nevah sed dat!!!"....except it's on tape and video that he did say it.

I mean, he's the crazy uncle that you won't let hold the TV remote at Thanksgiving......

I missed the beginning, but Francesa called in Boomer and Gio this AM and went nuts on their commenting on his various G-Men takes. Gio was somewhat deferential (Boomer was quiet) and said he hadn't heard all the comments, and Francesa accused him of taking things out of context, and said something like, "if you're going to imitate me at least get it right".

6:00, Mike is so worked up, he can't even hear the question straight (Mike clarifies for Giant-nation that Eli did NOT make the selection/draft pick for the Giants)

Francesa has always been a dog with a bone (no pun intended) who has to place everything that happens into the narratives he concocts, true or imagined. This time it bit him in the ass. He's been on the 'Giants are a laughingstock" kick, and he tried to shoehorn the shooting of a draftee into that narrative. Claiming he said it could happen to any team not only doesn't get him off the hook, it actually invalidates using it as part of his narrative. If it could happen to any team then it is NOT evidence that the Giants are a laughingstock. I mean, there are a dozen other examples from the past couple months to invoke to push the narrative without needing to claim a kid who watched his friend get murdered be one of them. Just a shameful display from a guy who's long past his expiration date.

"Mike, the Patriots cut Christian Peter a week after they drafted him. You think maybe it'd help the franchise in the long run if they just cut Ballentine right here right now.....?"

(wonder if he'll still be fuming by the time 3pm rolls around)

These comments about the Giants draft pick are reminiscent about his discussion with Dog about Sean Taylor (it’s on YouTube). That was worse though because Taylor was murdered in his home and both hosts intimated that Taylor was indirectly responsible for his own murder.

He’s losing it if he’s calling the morning show. Lots of heat on him about the comments on the Giant draftee who got shot.
I think that's why Boomer and Gio were we quiet or so deferential. Let Mike dig his own grave; no need to validate him or to stoop to his level by arguing back. (one of Mike's many recent "Germans? At Pearl Harbor?" moments)

Why didn't Boomer or Gio fight back a little bit? jesus that's embarrassing, especially Gio in his soft 'but Mike' voice. Don't let him roll over you like that.

Did he ask Rose which team he bet on in each series? If not, that was a huge miss.

Mike being MIKE:

https://twitter.com/BackAftaThis/status/1139254312020905985
Mike Francesa just totally denied a caller's accusation that he called Kevin Durant selfish. Here is that call, followed by Mike Francesa calling Kevin Durant selfish two days ago. (These are two different days -- he's wearing the same outfit)
So when his producers show him these things (or maybe they don't), I wonder how he reacts. I mean, the guy talks for hours every day and there's no way he's going to remember everything he says, and there's also no way he's not going to contradict himself sometimes. But when they've got recordings of you saying X, and two days later you're denying you ever said X and ripping the callers for calling you out for saying X, man, that's a bad look. Does he even care about any of that though?

Look at the demographic. This is the sports version of trolling liberals. People on Staten Island wolf down both versions, and Staten Islanders are his peeps.

The producers certainly are aware of it, and are either indifferent or delighted.

Both. This works in all arenas now. Since being caught in a lie or a misstatement no longer crosses a line where it "matters," taking the "who cares" route is easier to do.

His fans don't care, and his team revels in the idea of people caring enough to listen and catch him in another mistake.

Lather, rinse, repeat

If you go back a few pages: on issues that MSM has picked up on, he's accused Funhouse of using fancy editing to fake some of the clips. Right up there with "DON'T GIVE ME YOUR EQUATIONS!!!!"

The part of the simulcast that I find funniest is watching his thumb(s), and how quickly he hovers it over the dump button on almost every call. I mean, even on calls that praise him or offer decent comments/questions, he's got that thumb ready.

"Staten Islanders" nails his fan base. (I've told this before: you can always find or identify the SI teams at a soccer tournament the moment you see the parents/spectators)

Yeah I get that. I'm wondering if his PRODUCERS ever show him that, you know, the callers are correct. Or do they just let it go and let Mike be Mike?

They love when their meal ticket gets embarrassed? I guess, as long as listenership is good and advertising revenue rolls in. Do they ever point this out to Mike though? If so, does he care? Has he embraced it as part of his schtick? Or do the producers keep this info to themselves and just enjoy letting him flail away while money pours in?

I tried to dilute the political aspects of my post by keeping the big man out of this, with vague references to Staten Islanders. Now I’ll be blunt.

Do you believe Trump ever is embarrassed? If he ever is, so you think his base shares it to the slightest degree?

No — and no. This is that. You make up the most outrageous things, you deny you said them, and you blame the enemies of the people.

I enjoyed the Funhouse stuff as much as anyone else and for a long time. Then it occurred to me that the joke is on us. We’re being played for our sensible reactions.

In the meantime, no one under 50 remotely gives a crap.

I listened to the FAN when I was in my teens and 20s as did my friends. I’m sure it’s not so now.
So I was driving to New Jersey last weekend and I told my friends when we got into CT that at 4 p.m. we had to turn on Mike Francesca. My friends are sports fans but had no idea who Francesca was, and I just told him he was this guy with a New York accent whose old and gets into fights with his callers, many of whom will try to troll him on the air. So when it came on and he immediately got into a fight with a caller who said MSG wasn't special to NBA players and it wouldn't be able to attract a major Free Agent, and Mike went on a huge rant about how important MSG was to NBA players.

Then someone asked him if he would rather go to the Super Bowl, the World Series or the Belmont with a horse that had a chance to win the Triple Crown. I told my friends this was a loaded question because Mike was going to talk about every single time he went to one of those events, and sure enough Mike spent about 20 minutes recapping his experiences at every single one of those events. We were all laughing; but that is about the extent of interest Mike has with young people. The same could probably said for any of the local guys in Boston.
