This is so strange and wonderful:

Former Packers coach Mike Sherman will coach Nauset Warriors

My wife graduated from this high school, as did my eldest daughter. My youngest will graduate next June. One of my nephews played football at Nauset, and I am now certain that my youngest nephew will be playing football for Big Sherm when he gets to high school. Nauset has fewer than 1,000 students. A couple hundred dedicated parents and boosters show up for football games. They've been running the Wing-T offense for years here, stuck in the dark ages of high school football (I went to a football high school in Texas so this has been an adjustment for me). My wife and I volunteer for the school in various capacities, and I help oversee its budget as a member of my town's Finance Committee. So this is really pretty neat for us. I suspect that attendance at football games will be up this fall. This is among the least likely destinations I can think of on earth for a former NFL coach to land. Amazing.

This is fantastic. Great that he's opted to settle down and that his wife has unpacked their last box. And what an amazing opportunity for the kids at Nauset.

Wonder what it would be like as a coach to line up on the opposing sideline...

Mine too.  We didn't have a football team when I graduated in '95. Up until now the football program's biggest claim to fame was former Jets d-lineman (and current Chief) Mike Devito is an alumnus and donated money to the program.

One of the best things about this is that it won't cost the district extra to have a former NFL/FBS coach. He is pretty wealthy (got paid not to coach the Packers when he was at A&M; got paid millions not to coach at aggy when he was making pretty good money at Miami), and we have already approved next year's school budget, so there can't be any extra cost to the school. Anything he gets over and above the publicly-listed salary of about $5,000 (football coaches at Nauset generally have other teaching or administrative roles that make their overall compensation much higher, obviously) will have to be paid by boosters. What an experience it will be for the kids. He has already called a meeting for Friday to get acquainted with the upperclassmen and departing seniors to get a sense of the team spirit. Go Nauset!
